Circa 32-35 mpg combined from the Mazda if you are cute about your driving? Do you really think you'd be getting much above 50mpg from the Passat in mixed driving in the real world? Maybe but I'd be somewhat skeptical. You'd still need to cover some considerable mileage before you'd draw in the potential difference in the initial outlay and begin to save money.

I do take your point though that parts can be extremely expensive for Mazda's. They were never hugely popular so you won't be finding loads of them in breakers yards either. Cousin has a 01' Mazda 626 and he paid through the nose a few times to fix what you'd assume would be straight forward simple problems.

Fair point too re the Passat engine. Probably the last of the more basic straight forward reliable diesel engines before the toucy feely ones that are common place these times

Have had a Passat on several occasions as a company cay, never got much better than an indicated 47mpg, mostly driven on motorway and main roads, rarely in town so I'd tend to agree about 50mpg being the stuff of dreams, that said there would be a very noticable difference between the Passat diesel giving 40ish mpg and any petrol giving 30ish, again I had a loan of an E280 for a while and wasn't slow about handing it back

Got an 04 1.9 diesel Passat (red i) 3 months ago, does 46.8 MPG (6.05 l/100km) mixed over 8,300 km, essentially 33% each of N-roads, motorway and country roads, don't go into cities. Driven nice and easy on local roads, push it on a bit on good, wide N-roads, cruising at 150 km/h on motorways. This is measured by tanks fills btw, though to be fair the trip computer shows 47.2 MPG which is nice and accurate.

Agreed, but it was very well looked after by the previous owner and he thinks its his old car too. He recognises the scratch over the wheel arch.

I suppose if you are going to clock it you'll look at the condition a decide what you can get away with. In this case alot .

For god's sake keep it, changed to a newer golf as company car and it doesn't come close, was shocked, always thought the smaller car would be better

That said I had an Alfa JTDM 1.9 (150) a few years back and it regularly touched the 50mpg mark (measured - the trip comp often gave over 70 lol), again on mainly good roads, driven with spirit lets say lol. There's a lot to be said for the diesels.

    Nice spots DGT

Like the Xsara - and those are based on the 306 (on which the Berlingo is also based) - so should be fairly decent to drive.

    Good stuff

Reliable, economical engine, seriously comfortable, and a years NCT to boot, all for €700. A few marks on it, but serious value for that money, engine is worth a few bob for scrap if it doesn't make the 12 months.

No - shes the Rover L series engine - but its supposed to be actually a decent engine reliability wise.

And from what I remember hearing before - they are decent on fuel.

Think the L series was a development of the old Perkins Prima engine that was used in the Maestro and Montego in the late 80s/early 90s - but I could be wrong on that - apologies in advance if so.

While the Maestro and Montegos themselves don't have a great rep (later ones were much improved I believe) - the Perkins Prima was actually quite good.

Not sure if this would be more suited to fixxerupper thread but it's a lot of car for little money.
