Like those Mondeos. Had a base spec 2.0 TD estate with 260k on the clock and loved it. The one above isn't actually 130 bhp, is it?

A quick google tells me it is 125

    Which bit?

It's a fact (easy to verify) that slightly older second hand cars (say older than '07) with slightly bigger than average petrol engines (say 2l) are cheaper here in Ireland than anywhere else in the world :)

Quite right. But do you think its directly correlated to the weird tax system we have and if so, would it work out more or less the same compared to a situation where we did't penalize people for driving larger engine petrol cars?

In such a scenario one would expect the price of the car to go up considerably as soon as the tax rates came down, would one not? ;)

It's a bit trickier than that I believe...

It's not just the relatively high tax on older petrol cars (with relatively big engines). Another aspect is our severe recession which has tilted the natural equilibrium of supply and demand caused by the fact that more and more people are selling, and fewer people are buying. Desperate people are selling one of the few remaining assets that they have, emigrating people are doing the same, not helping themselves by needing money quickly. And then there is the mass hysteria that is telling everyone they should buy a small engined diesel car :)

Glass half full view: if you are looking to buy a second hand car - there's superb value for money in petrol engined family sized cars here :D

I like your style Unkel. Very detailed but concise explanation there - minus unnecessary technical jargon.

I suppose every cloud and all that eh?!!

Yeah , the second hand car market in Ireland has been hit by the taxation system and the recession. If you have a mid size petrol car , you don't get much on a trade in and you will probably buy a similar one for a small price. It has taken the fun out of changing a car , most do not want these cars as trade ins. The taxation system created a stupid anomaly which will not be fixed until everyone drives an 08 car. But you're right , buy what you like and can afford to run and forget about what the mass tells us.:D

Less bollox talk and more bangers!

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/03-skoda-octavia-1-9tdi-nct-tax/6148586

On a side note regarding the Fiat, they are supposed to be city cars so they are designed to withstand the impact of a city speed crash.
Of course if you drive it at 120 on the motorway and smash into another more modern bigger car then it wont fair well.
The idea they should be banned is just pure idiocy.
It's thanks to these cars that we can start driving at a young age with relatively cheap insurance.
And I'd agree that those motors are good fun to drive, the revvyness of them :)

Ooh, on an unrelated note; I'm buying a 1989 Daihatsu Charade tomorrow, to replace my 1995 Peugeot 106. I'll tax it straight away and use it for a month. My theory is; if I drive a very, very **** car for a while, I won't mind paying the tax on my Legend in January :D. Foolproof.

You're right there if you operate in the mid range, say from a couple of grand up to up to 7 or 8 or whatever. This system though is perfect if you're a Bangernomics head. Buy a car for a grand which might cost 2 or 3 in a "normal" market, drive it into the ground, scrap it and then get another one.

    Works for me :)

Love those things. Had a 92 Charade a few years ago, 220k on the clock, ran perfect. No power steering, gearbox like a Victorian signal box, clutch that'd break your leg but had so much character. :)

20 quids worth of petrol lasted about a month too.

    A smashing 92k kms on this :D

I gotta fill the tank tomorrow and see how long it'll last..

And now for this evening's bangers,

    1989 Volvo 240 Estate
    2.0 Petrol
    187k Miles
    NCT 5/14, tax 12/13
€1200. This would make an excellent family bus for €1k, I reckon. Keep it for a few more years and you can avail of classic tax, too.

I take it the owner is fond of his old Volvos, going by the other 240 in the background.

And if big Swedes aren't your thing,

    1994 Merc E220 Coupe
    2.2 Petrol
    150k Miles
    NCT 4/14
€1250. I dunno, its a bit dull, yet interesting. It looks tidy, I guess the catch is 900-odd tax. Worth a mention all the same, I reckon.

No idea it was a LONG time ago. Almost 10 years now

Some days though i'd give anything to have it back. Such a lovable car.
