im a dairy farmer and i want something that will take a bit of hardship, not alot but a small bit :D. What are the nexus like. Im using alot of farm programmes on the computer and these programmes now have apps for your phone out for Android phones but cant get for my nokia

an honest opinion, id find the Nexus better built than the S4 but id keep both in cases (ive an outdoors job too) the upside to the s4 is if you wreck it you can pull the SD card out and have most of your files where the nexus is all internal memory so it can be hard to recover files if there is big damage. I use cloud backup services like dropbox and Google drive to help with that problem.

Have you looked at the Sony Xperia z1? might be worth a look with it being dust and waterproof might suit farm work plus its a beast of a phone spec wise.

Thats the only thing about the Nexus, if you want it at the proper price you buy direct from the google play store but there is a little messing about as its only on the UK store (see the Nexus 5 thread on here) tbh for the money nothing touches it, theres just a few hoops to jump through to order it.

Looking at getting an S4 myself, but stuck now wondering should I buy online or buy in shop, PAYG. When I get it, im going to want to get insurance on it, but im wondering do most places accept the online invoice as a proof of purchase or do they want an actual receipt? Anyone have any experience on it??

Looking at ordering on pixmania, working out about 450-475 but thats off a french company :/ Then theres amazon too. Carphone warehouse is 530 atm so im wondering would i be better off just paying the extra money, to have an actual receipt and god forbid something happened, bring it back if still in warranty.

Ill be honest and say im a little biased, i only sold my s4 last month, while its a great phone it wasnt for me for many reasons.
What were the reasons you ditched the S4 for the Nexus?

Interested in a getting a smart phone soon also, and have considered the S4 mainly.

    Got an update just there.
Updated mine from KIES last night. Seems like bug fixes for the last 4.3 release.

Mine updated a while ago - noticed that the battery wasn't lasting as long before the update. Might be time to try a different ROM

That actually happened to me with the original 4.3 update, along with all sorts of other issues. I couldn't fix it and had to do a factory reset.

That is what i was expecting.. but not what i wanted to hear. Ridiculous carry on.

Any advice on the best way to back everything up before you went for the reset?

I presume I just need to root and change ROM in order to network unlock??

    Got an update just there.

Damn - what network are you on? I'm on meteor - no update. Kies tells me that I'm on the latest update. I'm looking for the bug fixes for 4.3.

    I'm on firmware "PDA:MJ7 / Phone:MJ7 / CSC:MJ8 (MET)" - according to kies.

To be honest, I found the whole thing rather enjoyable despite dreading it initially. All of my photos and music were backed up either online or on the SD card, so wiping the phone meant I didn't actually lose anything except call logs, text & WhatsApp messages and a few other bits and pieces that I wasn't really bothered about.

I wiped the phone, logged in to Google and my apps automatically downloaded. My photos synced, my music was still there and all the problems I had with the original update disappeared.

To be honest, it was nice starting from scratch with the phone again as it felt like I'd just taken it out of the box!

Cheers! You may have made the process seem a little easier. Its ridiculous that an UPDATE would make this happen though. Ill be avoiding the update like the plague from here on it.

If you are like me, with SMS messages going back years, and don't want to lose 'em, Sms backup and restore is excellent.

    Try SMS Backup Plus
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en

Similar to the app you posted but it backs them up to your Gmail account. So if your phone is lost you just install the app on a new phone and tell it to restore.

You all do know Samsung backs up your SMS with the Samsung account...

I didn't know that. Handy if you're going to stay with Samsung forever ;) If I lose my phone I'm not automatically going to buy the same model or brand again. It probably would be Samsung but maybe someday HTC will bring out a better phone.

I haven't even logged into my Samsung apps in ages. I find them too bloaty so I stay with the Market apps for most stuff.

I find it handy to use SMS Backup + to have my SMS available on Gmail. Easy to search and accessible from everywhere. They're viewable on my tablet in my Gmail app without any faffing about.

I bought a brand new S4 in carphonewarehouse with 24 month contract on September 10th. 2 months later and the phone refuses to charge one day after going dead. I handed the phone into the shop and they sent it off on 16th November, heard nothing at all so rang today and they did have an update which was the USB port/system is dead and that I was the cause of it so its not covered by warranty therefore I have to pay €160 to fix it.

The phone is immaculate and never been dropped ! I'm stuck for a remaining 21 months on a high package with no phone unless I pay €160 to fix a phone that went faulty by itself.

Anyone come across similar or have any ideas if I could do something ?

    Furious isnt the word :(

If your not happy with that, send it direct to Samsung or an authorized repair shop.

But carphonewarehouse sent it to Samsung and Samsung want €160 to fix it, I'm failing to grasp what a warranty is for when I still have to pay, especially with the phone being less than 2 months old.

How about the small claims court?

Don't bother with third parties. Your contract is with carphonewarehouse. If the phone has no signs of abuse or damage I'd argue that the phone should be able to handle a usb cable being plugged in and out of it.

I'd find it doubtful that Samsung are claimiing 160 euro to fix it when it is under warrarnty.
The carphonewarehouse *could* be fobbing you off.

I would definitely go back in and tell them if they wont sort it out under the warranty that you are going to make a claim with the Small Claims Court.

Car phone warehouse sends phone to fonfix.
Which is authorized to carry out repairs in Samsung's name.

Unfortunately your warranty is with Samsung and not CPW, hence why I said, take it up with them. Its a hard ball game to prove who's wrong. There are far too many cases where a phone falls on the ground with the charging cable inside and breaks the USB port, but leaves no external damage

Already spoke to Samsung and they said if CPW say I have to pay then I have to pay as giving it to Samsung will result in same thing.

Double check, id say they sent it to fonefix ;) Same happened with my old Galaxy Nexus, seems to be a samsung issue tbh, and its well documented, Fonefix said the same to me, i refused and showed meteor all the similar problems across the net that were fixed under warranty and asked for the phone to be sent direct to Samsung, it was and the USB board was replaced under warranty ;) you need to push it, even contact samsung direct.

If there's no external damage I'd be arguing that I didn't drop it :D

Anyway small claims is worth a try. I doubt it's an exact science. The USB could have been imperfect at the start and plugging in and out the 50 or 60 times over a couple of months could have been enough to push it over the edge. Devices can be sold faulty. It happens all the time.

Either the OPs lying and the phone has been dropped or CarphoneWarehouse are looking at the phone, seeing a problem with the USB port and assuming it has been dropped. They probably see phones coming in all the time that have been abused and erring on the side of blaming the customer.
