I didn't realise it was possible to contradict yourself so quickly in the same post. "This device could never stream local media" "what there was, was a hack that allowed it". I'm slightly confused, so are you saying it never could or it could??
And I know it never advertised it could, I never said I read an advertisement I said I read reviews where people were using allcast to steam local media.
Whether it was a hack or not it was capable of it.
So I did fully understand the capabilities of the device at the beginning but didn't expect Google to reduce these to be what is essentially an inferior product to a hdmi cable and adapter from your phone.
As for the slow clap, http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/clapping.gif too late.

Try not to be so condescending when you don't know what you are talking about and someone is trying to explain it to you.

The device officially, as advertised, never did want you wanted to do. There was a hack that allowed it due to a security hole that was patched up. Where is the contradiction?

As for your excuse that you never read an advert or (I assume) any official spec or capabilities of the device, that is your own fault. You bought it for purposes that it was not intended for (Google may yet enable local streaming down the line) and are pissed that it doesn't work.

When I first heard about it, I was like you "woo, a cheap device I can stream local media from" and then I actually went an made an informed opinion that it does not do that. When I heard about the hack, I treated it as such, a hack and decided to hold off until there was official support.

phil it's time to move on, you're making yourself look like an edjit .

even if you only read this thread it should have been obvious that if you can only use cc to watch youtube or netflix, if you have a sub.

You don't consider telling me that I don't know what I'm talking about as condescending? Or a smart ass comparing it to a microwave?
And thanks for your offer to explain it to me but it doesn't take much explaining.
My comment about the advertisement was that I never said I saw google advertising that it could stream local media, I did see the original adverts that showed it's basic capabilities and I was banking on the hack working.
Anyway I better leave it there as donegal Suggested Im making an edgit of myself in this oh holy of Places. How will I face the world.

There was a subtle joke in my post there that went over your head
And thanks for your offer to explain it to me but it doesn't take much explaining.

Clearly it does. (Ok, now I'm being condescending)
My comment about the advertisement was that I never said I saw google advertising that it could stream local media, I did see the original adverts that showed it's basic capabilities and I was banking on the hack working.

Let that be a lesson learned. In my experience about half the hack or roots or whatever either do not work or are more hassle than they are worth. If it's not officially supported, nothing is guaranteed. Hold on to your CC though, I would expect that Google will unlock the ability to stream local media in the future.

Probably for the best. Just take it one day at a time and remember to smile :)

CC has no interface of it's own to browse content so yes you need to select your content using another device and then push it to CC. Then the CC operates independently until you intervene again by controlling play back with the other device.

CC will use wifi and not your devices internet connection

Interesting. I cancelled my Xbox Gold sub recently so I’ve no way to watch NetFlix on my big television. Do you know if this will work from Mac to CC?

    Cheers.

    From the official site...
Chromecast works with devices you already own, including Android tablets and smartphones, iPhones, iPads, Chrome for Mac and Chrome for Windows.

I never tried pushing from Netflix on a laptop. I don't think it works in the same way as from a phone i.e. where the laptop can be turned off and playback on the CC continues.

I think it means you can mirror via the Chrome plugin? I found mirroring poor and I wouldn't want it to be watching something on Netflix via that method. It's more suited to displaying from your laptop where you don't care about quality and lag

I don't know if it's the right solution for you right now. I'd look for confirmation first.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to look up alternatives to the Chromecast, or have any recommendations themselves? Loads of them look good but I'm fairly new to the idea of a HDMI Android device. The selection on DX alone is fairly overwhelming.

Similar to chromecast device is this

A better alternative is (For the money this is being shipped to Ireland) - JUST ONE EXAMPLE, i pointed to that purely because of price and community. There are better, on that site. and aliexpress, hongkongeek, in4dealz, and many others.
    Install THIS APP

Like I was saying earlier I have that microwave. All cards on the table though, the local file streaming hack has been closed.

I have it plugged into the microwave and it's not working, bloody waste of money.

I have it plugged into the microwave and it's not working, bloody waste of money.

If you plugged it into the microwave that's your first problem.

Place it INSIDE the microwave, and place the microwave on full (It enhances the WiFi) for the length of the program or film you wish to watch.

Press start. It will cast your chosen viewing via the chrome in the microwave to any device you want. Open netlfix on your phone and wait for 10-15 minutes. If it still does not seem to be doing anything, stop microwave, open door and check the device isn't overheating.

    Disclaimer.

On the off-chance that sombody reads the above and believes it to be true, it is not. It is false. Do not put the Chromecast anywhere near your Microwave. It will destroy it.

People need to realise this is strictly a Youtube/Netflix dongle and it works fine for those, Google is deliberately killing anything that lets you cast your own videos to the screen which Im guessing a lot of people are buying this for, Plex is a load of sh1t, even if it wasnt a suttering mess its a horrible app to use, you'll understand whe you see it trying to scan your library. Other options like running VLC in a Chrome tab and casting that are equally bad, stuttering and unwatchable unless in 480p and even then not great.

Theres a chance Google might release a video casting app that will let you watch local content and if it works as well as Netflix and Youtube casting it will be great but judging by the way they're acting that's not going to happen, get an Android stick or a Rasberry Pi or whatever if you want to watch pirated stuff.

Ok its a bit limited currently but saying Google is deliberately killing anything is a bit harsh. One developer found a bug and reverse engineered it to cast local content. Google patched that bug and said it would support local content in the future.
Remember the SDK is still in beta. They are holding a chromecast hackathon on 7-8 of December with whitelisted developers invited. It's at this, or around that time, the SDK is expected to go public. Loads of developers have their apps already set up to support chromecast and only waiting for the private SDK to go public. When people open these Christmas Day there will be a lot of third party supported apps available. We'll know a hell of a lot more on the 7th of December and may even get an officially international launch then too.

Don't have it to try but Id bet any money it will be, sending unauthorized content is basically broken at the current time.

It gets much worse than this, but start here.
They have been continually blocking things with every update. ("It's just business. iOS have been doing it since day one.")
Samsung cannot wait to lose Android and have 5 companies backing them using Nokia OS that they purchased.
Heads up. Google's latest Chromecast update intentionally breaks AllCast. They disabled 'video_playback' support from the ChromeCast application.

Given that this is the second time they've purposefully removed/disabled[1] the ability to play media from external sources, it confirms some of my suspicions that I have had about the Chromecast developer program:
The policy seems to be a heavy handed approach, where only approved content will be played through the device. The Chromecast will probably not be indie developer friendly. The Google TV team will likely only whitelist media companies.

It is. Will not be fixed. It will always, from now on, be authorised content.

And given that Miracast is not their property and is becoming more popular, it's inevitable that better, cheaper devices will come out allowing a lot more than they do. (Lots already out).
Time to stop looking at the U.S. for innovation.

It works on hulu and itunes too. Amazon video does not support it, but that's down to amazon, not google.

I've tried it with players on tv network websites and the performance is terrible, but I don't know what that's down to.

Finally got Netflix working on it! Updated the Chromecast did nothing, but when I deleted and re-installed Netflix, the cast button appeared! yay!

No, and it looks like it never will be, not a version that lets you cast your own library properly anyway, you can run the current Plex media server in a Chrome tab and cast that but the performance is basically unwatchable.

So it's basically limited to Netflix and Youtube.
