Getting asked to buy her a drink... Am I missing something?

I worked in a nightclub for about 6 years and only once did I ever see the guy get the better of the woman.

He was at the bar with 8 or 9 of his friends and was buying a round of shots and a proper drink for himself for afterwards. This girl appeared and flung herself at a different guy who would have definitely been stung by her if he'd hadn't spent all his money.

She clicked the fella with the money and was ALL OVER him like a rash. About 2-3 minutes into her fawning over him she asks if he's gonna make (make!!) her stand there empty handed while they knock back drinks.
He's like "Why? Did you go out for a night without any money?" (He knows well what her plan is)
She, a bit taken aback, goes "No, I brought money. It's just...."
Then he interrupts her and makes a mockery of her. "Jesus. Have you been MUGGED?!! Are you ok? Lads, this girl came out with money but expects me to buy her a drink, she's obviously been mugged. Someone tell the bouncer..."

She wasn't long moving on and quietly buying her vodka at the other end of the bar.

These girls you're all talking about must be very young girls though, surely? Like in the 18-21 range? If they're older than that then that is very immature.

To the OP - glad you started this thread, i hear you loud and clear on this one as its something that REALLY gets under my skin :-( I'd say i easily get the same approach 1 out of 3 times that im out in Dublin (i must have the face of a mug :-( Anyway ive had girls take it a step further recently and how shall i say this without ruffling the moderators.. as the girls asks for a drink they strategically place a leg between my legs (for added effect i presume). Ive seen lads buckle at this haha.. but stubborn git as i am i lean over, pause to whisper in her ear .... "i think you have mistaken me for a some desperate mug, keep trying skank and some idiot in here will fall for your s**t, now F*** off!!" Its a little strong i agree .. but my god you should see their face its sooo worth it ;-)

Nothing worse than guys falling for this crap. Unfortunately it often does happen due to inebriation, nerves, lack of experience or a combination of all three. Hopefully we can all learn some good responses to this behavior from this thread.

Never buy a drink for a girl unless you're getting a round in. In fact my personal golden rule is never do anything for a girl that you wouldn't do for a male friend.

Happened to me once in Tripod years ago. I was at the bar, hammered, and suddenly i felt a hand crawling up my back. Turned around and this English girl begins chatting me up. I knew her game and I played along... Fool old Celtic Tiger times when you'd spend money so easily...

But if it happens again, some of the come back lines said here are brilliant :D

Mantra in Maynooth is one. The court in Naas is another. It's actually a common thing for clubs to do. Free drinks for the women means a lot of women will show up, which in turn means a lot of men will show up, and before you know it, the place is packed.

Ok fair enough but I never came across a niteclub that does this around my neck of the woods and being in quite a few of them at this stage.

What way does it work in them 2 niteclubs exactly? Do women basically have free run of the bar or get drinks vouchers in the way in or something? Depending on how it works I just don't really see how it would work from the niteclubs point of view. If they had free run of the bar I'd imagine they could they go up and get their fella a free drink soon after getting their own drink...letting on its for themselves by the way. This would hardly result in a profitable night for the niteclub and most likely end up costing them substancially

Otherwise do they get so many drink vouchers at the door or something? If so I'm sure these would run out eventually (you know yourself the rate some drink at). They might be inclined to touch a fella up for drink when they do run out (pardon the pun!)

Sorry about all the questions, just curious as to how this system works

I have to say, I've never seen any nightclub or bar offering either free or discounted drinks just for women. Ive seen women free in before a certain hour alright but free drinks?

I call shenanigans with out a flyer or actual proof of the offer tbh, not just anecdotal accounts.

    +1

Have also often encoutered Ladies Night where they get in for free, but have never seen free drink being offered. In fact I'd say there would be general uproar in such a case where women are encouraged to get hammered which would in turn encourage men to turn up looking for an easy target ?!

Never seen it in Ireland. Very common in the US. Heres an example. Scroll down to 'taiga lounge'. http://www.813area.com/specials/friday/

Ok, but even the case you mention, why should women get in free before a certain hour?

Ok, but even the case you mention, why should women get in free before a certain hour?

Probably not very politically correct a move but from a late bar/ niteclubs point of view I do see the merit in it and how it might pay dividends. Gets the punters through the door earlier than they might otherwise and of course they are going to buy a few more drinks in there than they might otherwise if they were entering at a later hour...something like that will pay off.

If you think like me and assume there might be a somewhat better chance of pulling or befriending a group of girls if in before a certain hour due to the high percentage of women to fellas then you might be eager to get in as well and egg your friends along the way....I suppose the point is that one follows the other whether you agree with it being politically correct or not.

There is a late bar/ disco or whatever you want to call it in Tralee. Entry is free before midnight for both men and women and €5 each for both sexes after. Probably open to abuse a bit with dodgy doormen but other than that I think its a strategy that most likely works very well indeed.

As for free bar for women...nah I'm afraid I cant see how that one works and would be shocked if there was a niteclub/ late bar in modern Ireland doing it...

In England I've been to a few clubs where before a certain time girls get in for free, men pay but they get a free drinks token to compensate which is a fairer system. I really can't see anywhere having an open bar for girls, a drinks token at the door maybe. Come to think of it, a few years back some clubs ran a night where you paid 20/30 entry, and it was an open bar for all. Limit of 1 drink per visit to the bar. Between the public outcry over promoting binge drinking/the amount of drink consumed the nights didn't last long, probably not that profitable in the end up. Maybe something similar is the basis for these anecdotes?

I'm not sure exactly how it works, whether its a coupon system or what, but I know in Mantra the women get free drinks up until midnight on certain nights. I always see them advertising it on their facebook page.

I thought this was fairly common, or at least it is in the clubs I've been to anyway.

Definately not common at all. I would certainly think there is some system of drink coupons or system of limiting the number of drinks per girl. Would be shocked beyond belief if a totally free bar was made available to women, even if it was only up to a certain hour.

I know a few pubs/ niteclubs used to have free bars for high entry fees such as €30 entry similar to outlined by guttenberg. Was moreso aimed at students as I recall. That was a few years back. Not sure if its still happening but haven't heard anything about it of late. I would guess thats hardly the most profitable model either (depending on entry fee of course). Probably wouldn't be viewed that favourably by certain members of the public either....tis terrible joe, tis terrible...you know the type:p

In Mantra they have different offers depending on the night. They do the 20 euro entry and you get a certain amount of drinks. They have a different night for the students. Every so often they get some geebag Z-list celebrity from Geordie shore or Tallafornia and that draws the crowds too.

Friday night is ladies night so drinks are fr... wait... this is Friday - what the fook am I still doing here?

<<<< legs it to Mantra. :pac:

Their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/MANTRA-Garden-Bar-Club/184058890634. No mention of it going back to the start of 2012 anyway. It's free in for women before 12 on Fridays, not free drink. I've never heard of anywhere in Ireland doing free drink for women

How many places have you been to in Ireland though? There's probably a limit to the amount of free drinks given in Mantra, but I've definitely seen it been done. It's not just free entry. I know of at least 3 clubs in Kildare that offer free drink to women.

Hang on a second, you definitively stated that you "always see them advertising it on their facebook page". Is that true or false?

So far you've claimed the Court in Naas and Mantra in Maynooth do this. Neither of their websites or Facebook pages make any mention of such a promotion. Not a very successful promotion if no-one can find out about it, is it? Can you provide a single shred of evidence to support your claim that any night club in Ireland gives free drink to women?

I started working in bars over 20 years ago when in school and it was rampant then. Still is from what I've experienced and not just from young 20 somethings. I've had women in their late 30s try it with me at the bar.

Swifty told where to go and the all have the same look, as if I just kicked their puppy.. :P

It's not dares either, girls come dressed to get attention and are willing to flirt with any guy who catches their eye. Most are fairly successful and drink for free all night.

Had two in particular in one night club I worked in who were always at it. They caused more hassle that in the end we barred them from the place. Didn't take long for word to get around of what happened and the usual girls soon copped on and stopped.

    Still rampant today though.

Is that not a small bit different to whats being discussed though. Do you mean you have girls approach you when you are working behind the bar chancing their arm to try and get a free drink? Not immensely different but whats being discussed is girls approaching random fellas on the other side of the bar and turning on the charm to get a free drink.

Must say in all my years of going out drinking this never happened to me. Now I did hook up with a girl on an occasion or 2 in my younger days where I ended up buying them drink for the rest of the night. Would have got the on thing at the end of the night though... Was never approached by a random girl asking me to buy her drink

It's young women moving in packs and daring each other to try out some randomer. All in good fun. Don't see why people are getting offended by it. It isn't all that common as far as I can see.

It's extremely common, but I'm in the non-offended camp. I've witnessed and been party to it on both sides of the stick. It's a numbers game. For every 5 guys a good looking girl will ask, one might buy her a drink or two, in a big club, she'll go to the toilet, and find another guy later. I can't blame them really. If I could, I would.

Don't be a dick, depending on the place that will end up as waste that the bartender could get in trouble for. My place is grand, they want us to report all waste, so it's at least accounted for, but I know of other places that let staff go if their bar keeps having too much waste.

Any age up to 30 I find. From behind the stick in a nightclub that's what I see.

I have girls chance it all the time, and I'll quite simply ask is it gonna result in us having sex. If they say no, I say, I'm sorry, but no point in wasting either of our time then. :) If they say Maybe, they get the same answer. If they say yes, I buy myself a drink, keep chatting and eventually maybe buy them a drink. :) Works from time to time. I won't buy someone a drink just for asking though, being good looking doesn't get you a drink, being interesting does. :)

From behind the bar it happens at least a few times a night, girls looking for discounts or free drinks. I pride myself on being absolutely amazing at customer service, so I have a few statements every time they ask.

I've never seen a chancer girl cause a fight.... girls who go around talking to different fella's and getting them to buy drinks don't cause fights, it's girls with boyfriends who do it.

    How about:

Girl: want to get me a drink?
Guy: sure, i was just going to get a shot, want one?
    Girl: yeah!!
Guy to the barman while girl cant hear: can I get two shots of diluted orange please, turns back to the girl and says I love this stuff, they make it up especially for me!!
Shots land on the counter and 1,2,3 knock them back
    Girl: WTF
    Guy: your round!

One of the places I used to go to had me ordering I think it was... 4 shots for me and the lads.
Then one random girl comes up and makes it five shots. Barman assumed she was part of my group (I didn't even notice your one asking for it).
Out come the shots, only 4 of them. Me and the lads each take one, girl is screaming like a lunatic.

Turns out the manager spotted the girl wasn't part of the group and told her if she tried it again she'd be thrown out.

I'd say I'll buy ya a breakfast role in the morning my friend. ;)

Seriously, this is a bit messed up, but my friend actively looks for women to buy a drink for but only if they mawl the face off him first. It works a disturbingly high amount of times. He is quite handsome though. I wish he offered to buy me a drink for a kiss. :(
