    18TB of storage? D:

Sweet jesus, there's me surviving off a 120gb SSD :o

    It's not actually 18. 3x4 in RAID 5 = 8, 2x3 in RAID1 = 3, 11 total. As it stands, I'm currently using 5. Still, a nice bump. :)

How come it loses storage over RAID?

That's really the point of RAID. You sacrifice disk space (well, full disks) for redundancy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

You might be thinking of RAID0. That's the one where the disks essentially get combined. There are other types those. With 0, if any one drive fails, you loose everything. Other configs, as Donny stated, offer redundancy.

The R in RAID stands for redundant. Loads of guides online that explain how RAID works if your interested.
But for example in RAID 5 if one drive fails you don't lose any data. You lose capacity but the pay off is your data is much safer.

In Raid 5 one drive worth of space (not 1 drive in particular, it be spread out across the drives) will be used to store enough data in order to rebuild incase a drive goes down.

Raid 1 is for reliability really, if you have 2x3TB you still have only 3TB of storage but if 1 drive failed then you wont lose your data I believe.

When I get more than the 120 SSD I'll be interested in setting up a RAID, till now I was only familiar with the RAID 0 and RAID 1. So excuse my ignorance :o

I am thinking of building a media server some time, could someone recommended a MB or what i should be looking for in a MB, I saw somewhere that consumer boards are not suitable as 24/7 servers? but i bet 90% of home NAS are. Planning on a Raid 5 build with 3 to 5/6 HDD + a SSD, Would i need a Raid Card or is there a board out there that came handle this alone. No idea of budget yet just look at options at the mo. Low power would be a plus

    Cheers

RAID 1 (depending on the controller) should also offer faster read speeds scaling with the number of disks, as each one can be reading a separate block simultaneously.

Well I have ~5TB of stuff copying... I'll update you all on that one in around ten hours.:P

Any motherboard from a respectable brand should be good for 24/7 use nowadays.
Last of my watercooling bits finally in stock :). Will fit them over the weekend.
As usual all bitspower except my blocks which are xspc

Nice one! Needless to say to post plenty of pics when you're done.

My PC was out of action for the last 2 weeks as I spotted a tiny leak from the bottom of one of the resevoirs. Only appeared after I turned on the PC after it being off for more than 3 weeks. Fixed now and leak testing this last few days.

Torn between replacing the Titans with R290's or 780ti's. All under water so the reference cooler performance with the 290's isnt an issue. Kinda leaning towards the 290's with it 4Gb ram as I game on 3 1600 screens.
My brother will happily take two of the Titans off me.

Two 290xs perform better than two 780 ti's according to reviews out today once its in 4k resolutions. Your using more than 4k with your screens combined (about 150% the pixel count) so i would go with the 290's.
Lucky brother you have there, I give my brother my parts when i'm finished with them too but would never be parts like that :)
Lucky you caught it before anything got damaged.
I want two 290x's and a 4930k but cant afford them as just cleared my credit card and want to keep it that way :P.
Yea of course will get some decent pics as will borrow my brothers dslr for pictures :)

I see that a single 780ti (overclocked @1284/7500) does beat a R290X (also overclocked) in most of the benchmarks bar 3Dmark but they are very close.
This was done over on OCUK with both cards on air.

I really want to see some results with these cards under water as most of the results I've seen so far are on air.

Are there custom PCBs for the 290X's on the way?

Their overclocking potential, Mantle(yet to see how) and that memory bandwidth is whats swinging me towards the 290x's at the moment.
But I'll have to spend time going through all the reviews, while navigating through all the forum bickering before I make a decision.

Anandtech tried them in cf vs sli in 4k which is where the 290x's performed just as well (meant this previous not better).
I wanted a 780ti but mantle was what is making me think amd again. Was pissed off with cf drivers for eyefinity which is why i dont want amd again but its fixed with 290/x

Seems Star Citizen and Thief are 2 more games that will support Mantle.

290xs are better bang for buck, but wait for reference solutions would be my advice.

    So, on the server front:

Started my two drives copying things, and about 4GB in, one of them disappeared from Windows. Restarted and everything was fine, copied again... 3GB in and it's gone again.

I've since swapped in the third drive, and that seems to be fine, but it looks like I'll be sending one in for RMA. A little annoying, but not horrible.

    Anybody have the Corsair H100i?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,698 ✭✭✭Gumbi

It would be fantastic to get a Saphhore card (I assume you mean the DualX one?). The VTX one wouldn't be so bad either. Good buy either way.

I have one but I only used it for a few weeks before building a full custom loop. The H100i performed well but the stock fans were a little noisy. I still have mine spare.

This should give an idea of what way i'm going with my route. I need more extenders to raise the cpu and motherboard blocks up to the level of the memory blocks. I didn't pick up enough of them. I will order 20,30,40, 50mm ones from netherlands.

    @ Terror Firmer.

    Got it today.

My 169.99 inc. delivery 'OEM' 7950 is indeed a Sapphire Dual-X Ghz card.

Tom's is saying that they bought a couple of retail units of the 290x and they're performing much worse than the review unit they received.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-290-review-benchmark,3659.html

At any rate, the 290 and 290x clearly have horrible reference coolers. No point in jumping on either until the third-party versions come out.

Mystery solved...turns out the retail units were not running the fans at the same rpm as the review unit. They were running at same percentage, not same rpm. AMD's solution: driver update to force fans to specified rpms. And they bumped up the rpm's from original review speeds as well.

Nice and loud. Amd missed the boat again with their reference cooler.

High end graphics cards with low end coolers do not mix.

    Will you ever learn amd.

Fortunately we have people like Asus pumping out some delish aftermarket coolers.

    R280X ROG Matrix.

Saw this on Linus' NCIX showcase and seems to be great bang/buck if you have 3 slots to spare.

One of the reviews(Hexus) had Crysis 3 using around the 3.5GB vram with a 4K display. Given that 7680x1600 is a good bit more than that then I think its wise to stick with the Titans for now. I posted this elsewhere and consensus is that sticking with the Titans is wise.
I'll wait and see if 6GB versions of the 780ti come along but probably I'll hold out until Maxwell.

Yea you would be crazy to get rid of your titans now you have them, but I think someone that buys titans has to be a little crazy or just have more money than sense :P.
I seen some info say there would be 780 ti 6 and 12gb versions but until I see proof would say thats bull.

As for sense, I gave up caring about that a long time ago! :D

I wonder though would 6GB on a 780ti be a disadvantage in terms of horsepower? I'm guessing that part of the 780ti's extra grunt comes from having only to deal with 3GB vram. Putting an extra 3GB on it might hinder performance to a degree but we'll see.
It's all well and good having the extra vram capacity but without the horsepower pushing it to give playable framrates, it's pointless. I think I'm probably close to that limit now.
