970 Extreme 3. No, the Fx6300 in general is fine for the game. My housemates much slower fx4100 and 650ti performs better than my 6300 and 590. I tried running Arkham Origins and its the same story, the fps is low no matter what gpu settings I use.

What are people's thoughts on NVIDIA's G-Sync tech, out of curiosity?

Sufficed to say, I've put off a monitor upgrade to see what it's like.

its very interesting but if they dont licence it out to AMD/Intel then i dont see it taking off as manufacturers probably wont see the point. the only monitors ive seen get it are TN panels that are priced at £250+ which we already know those monitors have a huge mark up

Its a huge tech for gaming but i dont know if it will g very far like most of the things nvidia do

Im still waiting on shield to be released in the UK s its something i have an interest in

I dunno. NVIDIA have a few pretty big manufacturers on board already. I don't think it'll just be TNs either. One of the main points NVIDIA was going on about at their demo is that you don't necessarily need 60FPS with this for things to be smooth. Linus himself said that ~40FPS with G-Sync felt better than 60 "normal" FPS. I think we'll see some good IPS monitors with this in the future.

I really hope it takes off. It would be great if it (or something equivalent) becomes and industry standard for all displays. Not only will is make display smooth for framerates in the 30-60 hz range, it will do it without requiring extra buffering latency.

I know I'm posting across two threads, but on the off chance that someone didn't see my post in the Yamakasi thread..

My monitor has stopped powering on as of yesterday morning. If there is anyone who lives somewhere relatively near Ballincollig / Cork City then I would much appreciate your help in testing my power adaptor (power brick).

    Thanks!

Why isn't there a PC gaming forum? Or is there and I'm missing it?

Because the steam universe is growing. Steam console, Steam OS, and general Steam related stuff. Definitely needs its own forum.

I can't get over the growth rate of Steam! More active users now than XBox Live! (65 Million as far as I am aware!)

I just think a forum to make groups for Payday 2/ ARMA/ DayZ groups etc would be cool, but again, it probably exists already on boards! I'm new (well returning after absence!) to PC gaming!

Just moved gaff. Got some phat 200mb UPC broadband in.

Not getting anywhere near those speeds yet although it could be the servers I'm testing.

Unhappy with 90mb down and 9 up. First world problems.

Wired I assume? Sure you arent using Cat5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Wired yes. I think it is cat5 tbh. I haven't used wired in years.

Is it a 100mb limit on those?

    What should i be using?

If its 5 it'll only do 100mb, 5e can sometimes do 1000mb(gigabit) and 6 should always. They arent 100% efficient so 100 gives 80-90 as you're seeing.

Was scratching my head with similar results for ages , turned out my laptop had 10/100 rather than 10/100/1000, felt fairly stupid :o

I was pulling 80-90Mbps over 5Ghz Wifi which was nice but ping was up around 30ms

Cheers so I should grab a cat 6 cable then? Or maybe even cat6a?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 360 ✭✭creep

I get around 208 mb/s with just a standard Ethernet cable. Didn't need anything fancy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

They all look standard though. You have to read the markings on the side to see what they are. You must be using a cat6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 878 ✭✭✭Luck100

You only need Cat5e for 1000Base-T (gigabit) ethernet.

    http://www.cables.ie/network-cables/

    What is a CAT5 cable?
A CAT5 cable provides minimum performance of 100 MHz. Most commonly used for networks with data transfer rates up to 100 Mbps. Used with 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T networks.

    What is a CAT5e cable?
    A
    CAT5e
cable provides minimum performance of 125 MHz and maximum performance up to 350 Mhz. Enhanced version of CAT 5 (specifications added for far-end crosstalk). Used with 10BASE-T, 100 BASE-T and 1000BASE-T networks (gigabit Ethernet).

    What is a CAT6 cable?
    A
    CAT6
cable provides minimum performance of 250 MHz and maximum performance up to 550 Mhz. Used with 10BASE-T, 100 BASE-T, 1000BASE-T (Gigabit), & 10000BASE-T (10 Gigabit) networks.

    When do I need a CAT5e cable?
    CAT 5e
cables are suitable for 10Mbps networks, 100Mbps networks, and 1Gbps networks. Although
    CAT5e
cables will work with 1Gbps networks, you may need
    CAT6
cables if you plan on expanding your network in the future because
    CAT5e
cables will not support 10Gbps networks.

    When do I need a CAT6 cable?
    CAT6
cables can provide your network with higher bandwidth. We recommend
    CAT6
cables for 1G networks and above. If you are installing a 10G network you must use
    CAT6
    cables.

Well I need to buy one either way and they are all around the same price so would i be better off grabbing a cat6A?

Only €2.50 on Amazon for a 1m cable.

Yeah, cat6a is even better. All these different catX ethernet cables have the same connectors and pin connections, they just differ in terms of quality of the link (bandwidth & crosstalk). So higher specs are always fine.

I was missing my 100mbps UPC too, but I'll be picking up e-fibre 70mbps at the end of the month, so we'll see how that goes.

I heard an ad for internet on the radio recently advertising speeds of up to 100 megabytes

    Impressive.

It's a cat5 cable. Those speeds you are relating to are lan speeds not downloading directly from a modem. it won't make a difference to the internet but will say if you have a switch connected to a pc and a htpc streaming from the pc
