Why isn't there a PC gaming forum? Or is there and I'm missing it?

I hate the fact that there isn't one. And not for any of that elitist master race stuff (though that as well).

As for the games section being too split up already, I agree, but that could easily be solved by getting rid of a lot of the other sub-forums that frankly see feck all activity. A Halo forum? Really?

It's a cat5 cable. Those speeds you are relating to are lan speeds not downloading directly from a modem. it won't make a difference to the internet but will say if you have a switch connected to a pc and a htpc streaming from the pc

The specs are for any devices with ethernet cable in between, even from your modem to your computer. That said, it's not impossible that you might get 1000Base-T performance with a cable labeled cat5, especially a short cable. It's just not guaranteed to work.

If you have the a four-pair cable, then it is guaranteed to work, or should be. It's in-spec.

Just moved gaff. Got some phat 200mb UPC broadband in.

Not getting anywhere near those speeds yet although it could be the servers I'm testing.

Unhappy with 90mb down and 9 up. First world problems.

You should check your network connection to see what speed it's operating at. There should be a 'Local Area Connection' link in your network and sharing center (windows 7). You want to make sure that shows 1.0 Gbps speed.

Most network adapters default to 'auto-negotiate' mode for the network speed, which can sometimes result in them deciding to operate at 100bmps instead of gigabit. For example, if you connect a 100bmps device to a gigabit device, they should (correctly) auto-negotiate down to 100bmps. I'm not sure but that may also happen if the network card decides the link won't properly carry gigabit traffic.

simplest way to check is press ctrl+shift+esc then select networking. You will see what its running at.
Also cat 7 is really good. I managed to get 10gb over a full 200meter reel of it while testing it before I networked my house with it.

Finally some leaked 780ti benchmarks. And now finally a single card that performs as well as the 690 or sli 680's. If the price is right this is a winner. SLI 780ti would be monsterious

It's not going to be any less than €700, would be my guess. I'd say around €750.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,698 ✭✭✭Gumbi

700 dollars (700 euro here) seems to be the price. It is definitely lining up to be a monster. And once they put some 780tis on custom boards(Classys) they will be monstrously powerful (up to 1300mhz on air, more under water). I'm not sure a 290x under water even will be able to compete. Better custom boards for the 290x need to come out for higher clocks to be reached under water, I thin kthe highest so far is 1320mhz.

It's at 100mb/s. How do I edit this?

In work at the moment and on old computer but should be in your network connections , select the local area connection which has your adapter, the one im on at the moment says Intel(R) 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network .

Right click that and press Properties, then at the top should be Configure so click that. Click the advanced tab and you will have various options, mines under link speed & duplex and mine is set to auto detect (work computer)

    1. Check the NIC(network card) is Gigabit capable(1000mbps)
    2. Get a new cable if it is. If it isnt you need a new NIC.

Where did he buy all these brand new components in the last year? A scrapyard?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

He started at €1400. It's worth about €700 tops.

In fairness at the rate PC components change in price, and new stuff comes out, it's near impossible to keep up unless your checking weekly.

I'm back looking into a new GFX, I look at components maybe once a year, and am truly bamboozled at what to attempt to buy

Its a socket 1366 motherboard so cant be an i5-750. Its a minimum i7 920. Either way its a joke at that price.

Just unpacked a Deep Silence Two, very nice case but compared to the HAF the side panels are a pain to get back on again, have to put it on its side as there are tabs at both the top and bottom and are near impossible to line up when doing it vertically.

    Hows the cable management space?

Haven't really had a good look at the far side of the case yet, depending on TV commitments tonight, I'm hoping to breadboard test a new z77 pro and with the i5-2500k I bought on adverts recently so I probably won't get around to putting it all together for another day or so, so will post some thoughts after that.

This is a nice topic to be honest. Worth keeping in mind before spending double amount of money on a component for minor increase in speed/size/whatever. In the end, few years down the road either of these components will have pretty much the same low second hand sale value. What do you call it? Resale value?

Easy example is current CPU market, big generation gap, but performance wise, pretty negligible. Give it 3-5 years and people won't care about difference between the two when buying second hand, as long as deal is nice.

Pretty much what happened to the fella there. It was a nice PC back then, but even now I can't imagine who would even spend €700-€1400 on a dead socket if you can build much much faster PC for that price range.

Ofcourse in the end it sorta comes down to knowledge of a buyer. Some people could just ask if it can run a certain game and be ok with it and the price.

    Hows the cable management space?

Helped a friend with his build using a deep silence II a while back and have a deep silence I myself. Cable management space can be fairly tight on both of them, took the pair of us and a little bit of manhandling to get the side panel back on.

We should be seeing affordable mainstream 1440p monitors already. Pc hardware is not ready for 4k. Not unless you don't mind spending 3-5k on a pc.
