See Bernard Jackman posting a tweet last night saying Shane O'Leary looks the real deal so far link:

    https://mobile.twitter.com/bernardjackman/status/365138284504035329?p=p

You have to wonder why he wasnt ever offered a munster academy contract even a sub-academy contract.

I think there are now 8 young Irish players at academies in French clubs this season - it will be interesting to see how they all develop.

Hopefully they will all make it but other than the odd one maybe two very few will play at a higher level than the Irish sides. It is great to see lads sprouting their wings as the oppurtunites in Ireland are restricted to a select few. If you are young and free a spot in a foreign academy is better than scratching at home

I think that it is great to see and fair play to them all.

Would be interesting to see if any of them get the offer of a France cap down the line....

Would that not just mean that he is in the Leinster sub-academy? He's finished school now isn't he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭lurtz

not necessarily. Hes been involved in sessions with just academy players,so whatever that means

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,636 ✭✭✭✭Tox56

Supposedly he was injured for a while, it's not unheard of for players to join the academy mid-season (Adam Byrne last year). He'll probably be added next season anyway so it doesn't make a massive difference either way

How much do you rate them?

I think I saw a bit of Wootton, didn't really stand out for me for Ireland. What ages are the others?

Burke is playing U20s this season (so he must be 19 or 20).

    Niall Kenneally is 21.

Burke real good throughout time underage and a limited push in scrum yet to really see him in full scrums. Outside set piece work is good.
Wootton is good player. yet to really see him play apart from 20s world cup where he wasn't a stand out.

Burke and Wootton are u20s this season so will not turn 20 until sometime in 2014.

Caufield is out of the ulster academy and is away to Plymouth Albion. Strange how ulster have a much smaller academy squad than the other provinces.

    Quality, not quantity eh?

I think that Ulsters academy is bigger, they just have not advertised it yet. They wait until after the 20's interpros before deciding, lads like Lorcan Dow and Mark Best are in there now and maybe more.

It is also worth always pointing out that lots of Academies are linked with Universities that give scholarships and they combine their studies with academy training, maybe put them down as sub academy, but are fully integrated within the academy training. Ulster are not as low as you think they are.
