that Point Blank was bloody addictive, think it was Bray Bowl that had it?

I bought it on the PS way way back.
But I don't remember a light gun fans getting the attention that Time Crisis got, it was huge!
Everyone owning a Gunton, people using the controller as the cover pedal, even those who never played the arcade game.
The two Point Blank titles sold loads add well.
But by the time Point Blank 3 came out and the Ghoul Panic people were a bit jaded.
I have a CIB Ghoul Panic here, with the gun, pretty nice.
Sega have possibly the richest light gun heritage though, and I would still love to see a greatest hits collection of the Saturn and DC output, while we have had HotD compilations, one with the Virtua Cop titles as well as Confidential Mission and Ghost Squad.

That reminds me, I need to get my AM2 emulator working properly with Hyperspin so that I can play House Of The Dead 2 on the bartop.

The Point Blank games were just stupid amounts of fun. Always had a go any time I saw them in an arcade!

Really great fun alright, but any extended play would surely result in RSI!

Was more of a Time Crisis man myself :) I think that has to be my favourite dedicated cabinet of all time. (standard cabs aside)

I've those other 2 as well. 3 is a perfect amount. Like the look if both the Luigi and Zelda XL myself aswell.

Edit: didn't realise atavan's 3ds get was so far back!

I think the Time Crisis series aged really fast especially as the era of the PS segued into the PS2. We saw FPS on the formats of the early 00's and results in the generic light gun game becoming superfluous.
Aside from the horror genre perhaps.

Have to disagree with you there man!

I think the series is as good now as it ever was. Visually it's obviously dated, but I still think it's as relevant as any other arcade game from the era.

Around the time of the ps2, people were starting to move away from CRTs and to Plasma and LCD panels.

    I think the death of the lightgun game was twofold;

    -Less and less CRTs
-Less and less people caring about the 'arcade' experience and wanting deeper games

I think it could have continued on in the same vein as shmups as a niche market if it wasn't for the death of the CRT.

I have to disagree with you there as well. Using an actual lightgun to shoot virtual things is a far cry from a FPS game. You don't get the same thrills from a lightgun game as you do from a FPS and it takes real skill to actually be good at them unlike some teen throwing up a ****ty no scope video with 'let the bodies hit the floor' in the background.

I think it's similar to the previous argument Ciderdude posted in relation to arcade racers versus home racers (and that the latter made the former redundant due to ongoing depth added to the experience)

They're definitely all unique experiences which still deserve to exist on their own merit. None make the other any less valid or dated IMO.

On the flip side though, the argument he can make is that the advancement in certain genres made similar arcade equivalents less popular (and therefore contributed to their demise). Still doesn't take anything from their own merit though or add datedness. (is that a word?!)

Just went back through the last few days of gets and there are some awesome super famicom and regular famicom gets. Think I might start collecting them myself, as the boxes are always so well kept.
Will have to get a Famicom AV top loader as well though.

Big proppage to the kube of monkeys for this Snes. It will serve me well it'll play Terranigma, & any other games that are 50Hz locked. Now, to mod it :)

Is there problems with Terranigma on a 60Hz machine? I was hoping to get my SNES modded and thought it would boot in 50Hz but can be switched to 60 after boot.

I would have thought the same. With the 50/60hz switch and CIC lockout switch you can boot anything.

Just the odd timing issue happens with some games, but it's rare.

Maybe it's a cosmetic thing, does a PAL game fit into a US snes slot? I know EnterMerlin doesn't like cutting up cases :)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,321 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

If you cut two plastic tabs they fit iirc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

The cart fits in fine once the tabs are removed from the inside. The game however is double locked, so it first checks the region, & then the display hertz. I can evade one of the locks by using a t-connector & US game, but the second lock catches me out...& because I don't want to mod the machine, it's a no go. A modded Snes should run it fine :)

Ah, didn't realize you're keeping the US Snes completely stock. Interesting decision for The King of Modding :D

Yup, just prefer to keep it that way. Doesn't seem worth it for the handful of games that won't play on it. The Super CIC mod is nice, but I'd rather have an excuse for having both types of Snes than modding one ;)

    Just in before Halloween !

    DSCF6117.jpg

Thinking about grabbing a Super famicom now as my original collection starts to grow and I'm still playing Emu on the Xbox, trouble is it's going to look like crap on a HD screen right ?
Got my eye on a Retron 5 that will come out in December, uses upscaling, a HDMI output, scanline options and can also take original controllers.
Plays Nes/FC Snes/SFC and Megadrive but I'm waiting for the first user impressions .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,912 ✭✭✭Steve X2

I'll probably grab a Retron 5 myself at some stage as I like gadgets. But it's running Android and emulators so its more or less the same as the OUYA I already have except it allows the use of real carts (but still runs them via emulation). You might as well just download the roms online and play them on emulators if you're main playback hardware is just running emulation (IMHO of course :))
Of course the Retron line of devices allows you to plug in the real controllers which is a huge plus, so there's that going for it I suppose.

Yeh, you are absolutely right !
It will still be emulation like I'm doing right now on the Xbox but I will be able to use my original carts, original comtrollers and it looks like an easy solution to play them .

Going to keep the famicom love going, these arrived in the post yesterday.

I took a couple of pictures of The Firemen running on sfc on a 42" lcd through a scaler, keeping it original hardware and software with feck all lag.

Called into Super Hoshi just before it closed this evening.
Picked up Bonanza Bros for the MD and Xevious for the Famicom, 20 all in, happy with that.
There was a certain other game there that I was going to buy, before remembering that the machine wasn't region modded.
    Close call!
Or so it seemed until I was out of the now shut store, when I then remembered that I have a pass through cart for the machine in question, allowing me to play any region game.....
    Bugger!
