got the update - no obvious difference but if it improves recording stability, drop outs and audio glitches then all the better.

Anyone have a synology NAS piggybacking onto horizon?
Settng up port forwarding with dyndns but each time it only takes me to the horizon router admin page instead of directing port 5000 to my NAS.
MY NAS is hooked to a Cisco WAG320N in bridged mode since I don't see the option in Horizon for this mode.

Port forwarding is only for connections from the outside world ( The WAN DOCSIS side) with an internet address into your Local network. The horizon box doesnt support Wan port mirroring so you cannot test this from your internal network, you'll need an additional internet connection to test.

The additional router in bridge mode is a bizarre addition and doesn't seem to make any sense in this scenario but its probably something to do with dyndns and this that's getting confused..

Yes, I've had no problems at all (looking at it right now). To access it I use the DynDNS address and port 5000, and it hits it first time every time. On the other hand, I've never managed to hit the Horizon router login page over the internet! Doesn't really matter as I changed the admin password and can't remember what I changed it to... When accessing the Synology NAS while inside the network, I have to access it via IP address, as the DynDNS address doesn't seem to work. I could probably add something to the hosts file to get it to resolve correctly.

On a slightly related note: anyone know how to recover or reset the Horizon router admin password? :o

Factory reset, dont save settings, sets it back to admin admin

For those who have dropped sound on your recordings, I have found that the sound is there, it's just not playing. To get it back I usually fast forward or rewind for a few seconds at x30 and play. The sound is there. If not I do it again. I usually get the sound back after one or two tries. Then I just rewind or fast forward to where I originally was when the sound dropped and it wil have sound.

Sounds like a top of the range service upc seem to be providing....

Its a shambles. Not fit for release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭seanie27

the service from my viewpoint has been fine. The box is software driven so there'll be a lot more to come from it.
It's far from a shambles. Most of the issues some people are having (from what I've read on here) could be solved by reading the manual or actually engaging with UPC to rectify them.

Is not fit for release, have you even used it Seanie? Ridiculously slow, laggy browsing which is the very fundimental of a tv browser. The guide is a shambles. I agree that its very possible future updates will solve most of the problems, but sadly Upc dont have a very good track record when it comes to latency or interfaces in general.
I mean, when they were testing it did someone in upc not go "hang on, this is rEally laggy and slow"? They're supposed to be grown up businessmen. Its embarrasing that they dont cop it.

Just got it today and it's a big improvement on my old hd box. However, during live tv and recording the picture changes to a blueish hue now and then. It's not my tv or the hdmi lead.

Its faster than the old box, its not perfect by any stretch, but its not anywhere near as bad as youre making it out to be

It most certainly is as bad as i make out. It looks great and has the potential to be really really good. But as i say the software aint ready.

I've had this box from testing and the functionality has always been a problem.
Testers have from the start said get the main features of a tv and internet box right and than add the bells and whistles. Dont release to the general public as a one box does all when it cant do even the basics without making it seem like a krypton factor challenge (showing my age there lol):P

Sound dropped again on Homeland recording last night - that's every recording of this series so far. Not only sound dropping but picture freezes, pixellating etc. Rewinding and fast forwarding, pausing etc doesn't help on this one I'm afraid. It's a known problem.

I wasn't one of those asked to trial it and I don't think it went on general release yet. Will have to check software version on box.

I wouldn't be commenting on it if I wasn't using it. The browsing on my box is fine. It's easy to use. For instance, my young children can navigate through it and find it very, very easy. The snowflake based UI is fine with me if a tad fussy. The broadband signal is great throughout the house. My only quibbles would be the need for more On Demand content and a series delete button. It's far from a shambles and much better than the previous digi plus box. a friend of mine who has sky really liked the Horizon box and enjoyed playing around with it when he was in the house.

My experience with the Horizon box has been a mixed bunch - dropped recordings, WiFi signal problems etc.
Has the potential to be really good but feels like a rush job.
Am in two minds whether to hand it back or not. If I got a decent offer from the loyalty team I might stay but so far nothing doing.
Does anyone know if you go ahead and send the cancel mail to UPC will they contact you with offers to stay. I know Sky will but haven't heard anyone saying the same thing about UPC

Since the update I received on Monday the software is even worse. I find that when I watch a program for more than about 30 minutes and then try to pause or rewind the whole box just freezes. Sometimes it comes back after a minute or so but most of the time I just have to plug it out and back in. Seriously irritating. They did send me another survey today though where they seem to acknowledged these issues and they seem to be addressing them anyway so that's good.

    A question for ye!

In the states, if the cable box blew up, you could just connect the tv straight to the cable input, skipping the box, and get local channels.

UPC is hardly the same is it? Could I just connect a coaxial straight from the splitter into the tv? Or is this just fantasy? Thank you!

You'll get about 20 analogue channels in most areas of the country, and none at all in others.

Is there a reason why BBC2 HD is on 140 on the Horizon box while BBC1 HD is on 108? All the other HD channels are swapped

Got my box today and so far so good apart from a couple of freeze ups. One thing annoying me though is that it seems to make high pitch noise which is quite irritating. Any else have this?

BBC2 and BBC2 HD still have some differences in programming whilst BBC1 is the same in SD and HD (both NI versions). So they've kept the NI channels together (108 and 109).
