After mulling it over for the day and checking benchmarks and what not your right really. I know you've said it a few times the difference is only 5-10% so for the extra cost not worth it.

When you see 7970's going for that money it does get tempting though:(

Speaking of getting a second card of a different brand, would a blower style fan be better for the top card? As in pumps the heat out the back insted of back into the case? Thinkin the HIS ones going for cheap on ocuk
Im fairly positive the vapor x will be fine as the bottom card.

The voltage is 1.240 at load on the vapor x no matter what clocks I have so I reckon I may be able to undervolt it a little, it does 1150/1500 at that voltage so doubt ill get that overclock in crossfire so may be able to reduce the voltage and mildly overclock it to help with temps

Is there any issues with two different brand cards?

I've an asus direct cuII V2 7950. I'm not really using it atm (I've a tonne of games but waiting to get the Wolf Amoung Us.) If ya wanna borrow it and try it out for a day or something you're more than welcome to.

Very very quick and stupid question here.

I have a KFA2 Nvidia 650 graphics card on my PC, if I want to go for a SLI configuration down the line, does it need to be a KFA2 as well, or can it be like an EVGA Nvidia 650 instead?

Brand doesn't matter. Just make sure it does actually support SLI. It should do, but some of the lower-end cards don't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭raymix

it's fine as long as it's 650. Anything else will be symmetric to weakest card.. like if you run 1GB card in SLI with 2GB, both will run on 1GB only, same goes for frequencies and other stuff

edit: your card doesn't support SLI. You need at least 650ti Boost (2way sli only) and up. Look for cards with SLI bridge slot on top.

I would highly suggest looking at bargain's thread in PC building forum instead. 7950 goes for about 230 and will easily blow dual 650 ti boost out of water alone. It is equal to 670 in performance and performs better at higher resolutions over 1080p.
Keep in mind that 650ti boost is equal to 7850 and very close to 660 in terms of performance and is much stronger than 650 ti.
650ti again is quite a bit stronger than 650 you've got.
Just to give you an idea of gain. However card like 7950 can be easily bottlenecked by older CPU.

Cheers for the advice from both of you.

Raymix, are you positive it doesn't support SLI?
The manual, box, drivers and software all say it's SLI capable.

It's a new card and PC, so I'm not really any rush to upgrade the card or go SLI yet.

The stock 650Ti doesn't support SLi, however the 650Ti Boost does. I'd say if the manual and box are saying it supports SLi, it's a Boost. Easy way to check for the SLi at the top corner near the IO panel, there will be a connector for SLi.

    It's just the 650.

I managed to confirm it on the site that it does support SLi, but at least now I'm certain I don't need to get one of the same brand for it to work.

I accidentally over clocked my cpu on Sunday, I didnt want to post about it as I felt like a fvcking moron :o
How ever I figured it out for my self.
Incidentally fx 8350s at 4336.3 mhz run bf4 amazingly well I just need to get a better cooler. :D

In law is looking for a laptop for around the 300 mark. Needs it for Photoshop.

Does that sound like a tall order to you?

Apologies, it does support SLI, indeed. However you will need a similar GTX 650 card that supports it, too, doesn't matter which manufacturer tho...
it cannot be either 650ti or 650ti boost! Those 2 are different cards.

I just took a quick glance at top of the card at first.
Aparantly it is possible to run SLI on some low-mid range cards without an SLI bridge:
The SLI bridge is used to reduce bandwidth constraints and send data between both graphics cards directly. It is possible to run SLI without using the bridge connector on a pair of low-end to mid-range graphics cards (e.g. 7100GS or 6600GT) with NVIDIA's Forceware drivers 80.XX or later. Since these graphics cards do not use as much bandwidth, data can be relayed through just the chipsets on the motherboard. However, if no SLI bridge is used on two high-end graphics cards, the performance suffers severely as the chipset does not have enough bandwidth.

    Interesting...

    Its a hard 300 budget I'm afraid.
Second hand is fine. I can format and test as needed.

That looks like a bus clock, this technique is supposed to be most effective, but hardest to tame as it's rather unstable and requires to adjust DRAM timings and NB volts, maybe even few others to reduce noise or w/e...
You'd be better off getting cheap 212 evo and pushing it to 4.5Ghz with multiplier alone (keep bus at 200Mhz), Vcore to keep it stable is very close to stock at that range, give it a try, it's a massive boost for games.

You could sli gtx550, so no reason you couldn't with the 650 as well. provided you got the cards for good prices, the performance isn't half bad!

I just bought a 2560x1080 monitor, got it for a good price, had originally intended getting a catleap but this tickled my interest since i'd hope to be doing a bit of editing work on it. could be a horrible mistake though. anypne own one?

you could always pic up a spyder pro 4 and calibrate it that might help. I've had to use one before on some gastly monitars... :)

just a thought if the colors wrong the hole vid will look off. In terms of white balancing.

    Thanks man i appreciate that:)

I think im gonna just buy a second vapor x and see what clocks i can squeeze out of them, add a few case fans aswell to improve airflow.

The Vapor X has dropped to GBP199.99 on overclockers so hopefully get it delivered for about €250

The Wolf Among Us looks brilliant, watched the first episode of a playthrough just to get a preview

I was 99% certain on only being able to use the 650 variant, wasn't positive if it had to be the same brand.

I haven't built a PC since the late 90's early 00's and haven't really paid much attention to changes, so I'm playing catch up on a lot of the stuff these days.

I knew SLi was possible with it, I checked it with Overclockers before I got it. Now I just need to try and find somewhere that sells it for a decent price, most places are doing the T and Boost variants now. Looks I'll be on Amazon when my wages are in :)

With just a vanilla GTX650, you're better off just selling it, the lower range a card, the better it holds its resale value - you can get a 7870 for 150 delivered from Pixmania, which is a much better option than 650 sli, and, combined with the sale price of the 650, more economically viable too (though i think most of us on this forum would readily admit that value for money is a fantastic theory, if nothing else :p )

Have a Dell 29'' no major complaints. Great for watching movies on, especially once I figured out how to set the correct aspect ratio for the screen in vlc! Not too many issues with games. Even BF3 and 4 support 2560x1080 out of the box.

Have not used it for editing though... Should be like editing on dual 17'' monitors without the bezel..

    So.
I do a little bit of games dev in my free time. Mainly using OpenGL. With Mantle just around the corner I am quite excited by it and would love to have a mess around with it.
Problem is, I am running an NVidia card so Mantle won't work on that for a few months anyway. Is it possible to have 2 graphics cards installed? A friend has a HD7770 he isn't using. Since I have an i5, I already have 2 GPU's in my system and everything runs fine :D

I've been looking at getting a GHz Edition for a bit now, it'd be even more tempting if I had the money!

The 7950 prices are starting to drop a little on there now aswell.
Got a Vapor X there last night for €250 including delivery and 3 free games

Theres a few on there even cheaper again, prices are changing very quickly though. Cheapest at the time was a HIS brand, £173!!

I was wondering what free disk cloning software people are using these days?

I haven't cloned a drive in a while. Just want some recommendations.
