    Midlands.

4.28 would be including bonus. It's pretty much 4.10 base everywhere from what I hear

I've a few bullocks ready to kill, I was holding out for 4.15, but the agent I've been dealing with can only offer me 4.10 and maintains that they could well be dropped 5c next week if I don't go with them now .
The Independent today is talking of 4.10 and up to 4.20 being paid this week, are possible quotes of 4.05 likely next week ??

Left a few heifers down last night. A lad would get great ideas for penning/cattle handling down there. done out to the last. rubber grips on underloading bay, sheeted pens, pedestrian walk throughs etc.. was going to take a few photos for ye, but factory lad there washing down

There is an opinion that factory's drop the price of cattle this time of year for a number of reasons. One is that it allows them to fill there own finishing units , it also means that finishers can see a margin in finishinf cattle in the winter and again allow factory's to forward price contract cattle at a rate they otherwise might not be able to. It discourages the killing of forward store cattle and allows finishers to buy these cattle for final finishing before and after chrismass.

A factory owner from the south east told me last april that he would be buying prime cattle at less than 4 euro a kilo come the backend that was at a time when beef prices were at their peak. Quality store cattle are still very hard bought roscommon was a roaring trade last friday

well the winter finishers have to get a higher price than this time of the year as its a much higher cost period. One would wonder how much the constant supply of beef is adding to the industry as a whole or are we better heading back to the seasonal supply

Factories finish very few cattle themselves. I would be surprised if the big 3 are finishing any more than 30k cattle

Why would they when farmers do it for them for nothing

I was talking to the oul boy about this the other day, he pointed out that the flattened supply profile had simply given the factories the ability to f**k their suppliers over every Monday morning instead of just on a seasonal basis when supples are plentiful.

The behaviour of the factories mystifies me. They are now pushing for all bulls to be finished at 14 months. Considering that the vast majority of bulls are born in a short period of around 3 months what do they intend to do for the remaining 9. They moved heaven and earth (or gave the impression that they did) to reduce the numbers of calves being exported 18 months ago and as soon as those calves come towards finishing they start to dream up any excuse for cutting the returns. Have they really got goldfish memories to that extent? Do they think that something has happened to the ferries and long haul livestock transports that will prevent the replacements for those cattle being shipped?

why would you allow them to go overage?
are you not just handing the initiative to the factories and allow them to cut the **** out of the price?

Classic tactic though to drive the base price down even lower.

FR's in particular need the extra time so not feasible in many cases to have them finished before 30 months.
