Did somebody tell John Barnes he was being interviewed for Global Village??

John Barnes probably means well and definitely has a point when it comes to the lack of black/ethnic minorities who are managers in British football.

However, it was disgusting of him to play the race card when he stated in the past that he believed that he got sacked from Celtic when he did because he was black.

Utter rubbish, you got sacked because you deserved to be sacked.

heard him on OTB and on the 2nd captains podcast. he just seemed to be a really difficult person to interview. kept talking over the person interviewing him about stuff he wasn't asked, trying to steer the conversation his way. just dreadful.

On Off the Ball they actually thought he was very good. He is utterly useless.

Who's doing the football show from 9pm on OTB?

Their soccer coverage over the summer was very weak imho - any time I've tuned in it's been either Graham Hunter and Pat Nevin whining on bitterly, with Gilroy or Joe (doing a Gilroy impression) chipping in every now & again sounding bored out of their heads

Maybe he said that in the past but, that's not what Barnes was saying on OTB, he said that ultimately all managers would be judged on results. But he was making the point that we all have unconscious opinions due to the influences of society, environment etc. and if some German guy "Johann Barnes" was appointed as Celtic manager and was equally crap, he would have got an extra few games to prove himself before he was sacked due to the stereotype of tactical, efficient, intelligence we sometime attach to German football.

    Maybe he's mellowed his opinions.

Barnes is a horrific interview, he always has been.

He is the character who is saying "no" to the question before it has even been asked.

He goes out of his way to disagree with an interviewer, its almost as if he acts like an interviewer isn't there and spouts on about whatever he wants to talk about in general. When the interviewer tries to interject he has to make the point that he disagree's. Count the amount of times John Barnes says no in any interview.

Superb footballer in his day, was definately management material in his own head when he retired but he proved utterly useless at it on a couple of occasions. He would have been sacked no matter what race he was.

Himself and Jason McAteer were aptly christened Dumb and Dumber during their time at Tranmere Rovers.

He's only going to be doing it for the first two shows, Paul Dempsey will take over after that.

Totally disagree with you fellas about Barnes. I think he is an extremely intelligent man and very interesting to listen too.

Someone mentioned that he always plats the race card, couldn't be further from the truth.

Astonishing from him considering the useless job he did for us.

I don't make a habit of moaning about the new OTB team but I don't get their fascination with Pat McQuaid. Do they really think their audience is that interested, maybe I'm alone but I completely switch off when they start up, first half hour tonight.
Is McQuaid a criminal or is he evil, what is the story, it's really not that interesting to me.

OTB (old and new) were the only ones to keep going on about Lance Armstrong when no one else did. they interviewed loads of people over the years who had their doubts. part of the story is that LA paid off Pat McQuaid's predecessor at UCI after he failed a drugs test. there was also something dodgy about LA being allowed to participate in a Tour in Australia before he had proper clearance with a biological passport. i'm sure someone else can clarify further.
i only read tyler hamilton's book last month and can't remember properly now!

either way, Pat McQuaid's image does not come out well and cycling won't be able to move on fully until he pisses off into the sunset. something he won't do without a fight.

Unfortunately for OTB (old and new) this story has lost it's appeal since Lance fessed up on Oprah....hearing the intricate details of the UCI's internal voting rules being discussed ad nauseam is like listening to paint drying tbh.

    He's evil.

But there's a lot of people out there interested in the story. I've no interest whatsoever in any soccer discussions and most of the GAA stuff, does that mean they should cut down on it ?

That's cool, OTB must be tough going for you though.
The McQuaid stuff seems to be outside of sport though, It doesn't interest me, I merely speculated whether others felt the same.

Different people have different interests, but I can't see how you can say it's outside of the sporting sphere. Would you argue the same if it was Blatter ?

Yes I would with the amount of time they devote to it, did you hear last nights program, they started with the breaking news from Switzerland like it was a 9/11 situation then had a long interview with the Aussie guy who had a massive axe to grind, when the OTBs teams view are taken into account there was no impartiality whatsoever, came across as the conclusion of a witch hunt.

Will cycling be in a definitively better place without McQuaid? Was it all sunshine and roses before him, these are genuine questions, I used to like cycling and I'm a huge sports fan but I haven't had an interest in years.
It's not like an Irish radio show with a tiny listenership can really make a difference, Paul Kimmage and David Walsh have far more influential ways of getting heard when they need to.

    ah cycling is a sport

I know cycling is a sport, sorry lads, we've gone a bit off topic, my original question has been answered, i'm in a minority who don't want to listen to it anymore:o

Saw the (new) Off the Ball posse (Gilroy and Parkinson were there, can't remember who else) have their own big sports spread thingy in the indo today, presumably an ongoing feature. DOB clearly looking after his 'people' (as well as putting money into his media operations in fairness).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,940 ✭✭✭ballsymchugh

there's been a big indo/times alignment since the schism.

gerry thornley is the only one that seems to cross the divide anymore.

Richie writes for the Sindo and Dion Fanning was on with the second captains last week. Although Fanning is more likely to be to be aligned with Anne Harris than he would be with O'Brien.

The Sunday Sports Show is using OTB's twitter and facebook accounts as it's own. Obviously they are doing so to bump up those accounts numbers...but why? Do advertisers/sponsors really take notice of how many twitter followers a show has these days. Gilroy had been using his twitter account as the weekend show's account, maybe he still does when he's on.

Think the weekend shows are being brought under the Off the Ball banner.

Why though? What would either of the shows gain by doing that?

Well with the new OTB Indo column, maybe they're building a 'cross-platform media brand'. Or something.

It's building a brand. Therefore no one individual (ie McDevitt) wont ever be bigger than the show again. They'll not make that mistake again. It's hit them hard.

Newstalk lost 5 of their sports department so in order to fill the gap they have all been doing their fair share of weekend shifts so it makes sense to bring it under one umbrella.

I think the show has recovered well. I like Ger and Joe, that guy Lyng is very good too. I don't mind Wooly but I still miss Murph.

    I'm still tuning in anyway.

I found Brady's story about the Mayo lads using earpieces in training ("real time....an hour later") highly entertaining. Then Wooly asked James Horan which was funny
