I remember that interview. I didn't see it as Gay Byrne defending the church.

Casey was a friend of his. Annie Murphy had an affair with him and a son. She then went public with the affair and destroyed his career and life. As far as I can recall Casey had not acted that dishonorably.

I see the interview as Byrnes annoyance at a woman who had gone public to destroy the life of a friend of his.

Religious hypropricy deserved to be exposed but given the subsequent revelations Casey was far from the worst of the those that serve the catholic church.

So you believe it is not that dishonourable to deny your son, and to steal money to cover up his birth and life. I would personally think it is very dishonourable to do both those things, as a man or a bishop.

No doubt Casey was a hypocrite. But I feel that Gay Byrns distaste towards Annie Murphy was personal because she had destroyed the life of a friend of hid. He was not defending the catholic church.

Screw it. Trying to play devils advocate. But Casey was a Bishop in the roman catholic church in Ireland. He defended and supported their actions. He also behaved dishonourably and hypocritically and deserved to be exposed. Not necessarily as a man but as a bishop of the catholic church.

Seriously, he didn't exactly have the best start in life. No matter what he says now, about meeting and eventually becoming "friends" with his father -- it's not exactly normal to have a bishop as your father, and to have a whole country talking about you and judging your mother (let's face it -- blaming her). It can't have been easy for Peter.

No it's not. But there have been some. Try the phonebook for various strains of McAnaspie, McEntagart etc.

Yeah, I know. I've been told I have "bishops and bigamists" in my own family tree! No specifics, though!

Only Gay can say what his motivation was. I would agree with you and in my opinion it had a lot todo with the personality of Casey.

Men who are ordained into the Catholic Church should be allowed to marry and have children. It's a ridiculous man made law that needs to be relaxed.

Take a hint from the Protestants for 'God's' sake.

He embezzled chuch funds because she was demanding large sums of money from him to stay silent and d it was the only way he could get it.

Casey dipped his wick and he had to pay for the oil.

Religion is ok if it's kept simple i.e. a basic moral code but they get carried away with their rules and rediculous regulations.Being a good Christian is about how you treat you're neighbour than how many prayers it takes to get into heaven. The Protestant Religion seems to be more realistic judgeing from the very little I know about it.

Typical AH anti-Catholic whinging against a Church that has been a stabilising factor in Ireland, railing so much against the somewhat hyped up tyrannies of the past (and ignoring the State's own separate issue). If a tithe the effort was placed in combating Ireland's current issues we'd not be in the state we are now in.

And there I was thinking it was about Gay Byrne......

What exactly did she think would happen by opening her legs to a Priest/Bishop?
    Takes two to Tango.
Casey made an error, but so did she.
    Whatever happened to personal responsibilty?

    What ever happened.?
It brought up the child alone I think

And in Breaking news the celebrated actor John Wayne has died.

I think the Reformation made a lot of sense when you look back at it. As a Catholic Christian I'd consider shifting gears and joining the Church Of Ireland. If they'd have me of course. :pac:

    It?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

She had a partner for much of the 80s and early 90s. In fact it was him who leaked the story to the irish times. They broke up in the mid 90s and she is now with a new partner in CA and living life to the full by all accounts. She seems to be a strong woman.

In fairness id rather priests riding women, than raping kids.

You do realize that those two urges are not interchangeable?

If Byrne was so pro-Church, why would he give Sinead O Connor a hate platform to tear up a photo of the Pope on the Late Late.
Around the same time as far as I remember.

Except she did that on Saturday Night Live, an American show, and not the Late Late Show.

Not sure hate is the word I would use. Protest is perhaps more appropriate

What was it that Annie said in return to that, I remember it was a famous remark something like "or even like me, Im not that bad either" but im not 100% sure. And she was right to say it, it was at a time when the church ruled.

Think it was something like "his mother is not half bad either you know"...

How so? And even if there was, I'm pretty sure child abuse and subsequent covering up of the same is pretty worthy of hate
