Mickotoole, sounds like the same thing that has happened too me a few times.

On another note, I don't like the way the time is tiny when you go to flick channels.

That and I haven't noticed a way you can browse easily.

One feature I really like is the reminder prompt, not a massive bar in the middle of the screen just a small box in the too corner, with the channel logo name of program is about too start.

I had the exact same issue with my wireless HP printer. I couldn't print from my ipad or iphone. UPC tech support couldn't help on this one. It was one of the reasons i sent my Horizon box back after 2 months on the trial. I've reverted to my old set up, and the printer is working fine again.

For wireless printing issues really you need to do the following.

on your printer, check what IP address and Subnet it is on, your old router was probably on a different 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x address.
    eg
    ip address: 192.168.0.5
    Subnet 255.255.255.0

On your PC Check what your IP address is. Goto a Command prompt (search or run 'cmd') and type ipconfig

This will tell you what your IP address for the computer.

The Computer and the printer MUST have the same set of first 3 numbers. eg 192.168.192.x.

If they dont they wont talk easily. This is the most common problem with printing wirelessly and a new router.

That's not the news I was hoping for !

UPC Reps reading this .... can you comment ? Thanks.

    Hey guys,
Have been following the thread with interest. Took delivery of my horizon box yesterday and went home - took about 15 minutes, generally everything works which was nice! (after reading this thread!)

    My experience so far:

    1. Getting about 60mb down over wifi, will need to do a wired test but fairly far off the 150 mbs - does this take a while to ramp up?
    2. Navigation through the UI is not an issue, very fast. Just need to get used to it
    3. Generally prefer the UI to the old one, it is much better, in picture navigation is good.
    4. Need to use the apps more to get a better feel for them
    5. Changed the SSID/password all worked as expected
    6. Have not connected successfully to my media player on network yet - need to spend more time doing this
    7. Was able to connect to shared folder on laptop but not all files displayed e.g. only some music files - does it take a while to scan the folders?
    8. BIG One - my pause/rewind/fast forward of TV is not working - is this a known issue??
    9. Some of the HD channels, don't really look like the same quality of HD from the cisco box... anyone else experience the same?
    10. Is there an internal volume on the box like the was on the cisco one?

Overall first impressions are very good, am optimisic about it. Need to get used to it and really the only thing that I think I need fixed at this point are the pause/rewind/fast forward features.

Also I was told my bill would go up approx a 10er - fine, for the increased broadband speed, minutes, features I'm ok with this. I was told that my discounts would still be applied so I'll be watching my next bill very closely. I've had terrible experience recently with my discounts just not getting applied!

Access the recording as if you are going to watch it. Then instead of selecting 'View' scroll down to Delete. Careful you don't choose Delete Everything though!

I still don't know how to delete multiple episodes/entire series without doing it one by one, though. Anyone help?

krattapopov you're doing well if you're getting 60Mb on WiFi.

Pause/rewind/fast forward should be working - contact UPC.

Don't think there's an internal volume, it just controls your TV.

    9. Did you check the HD resolution on the box? Mine wasn't set to 1080 by default but I'm getting a much better picture since I changed it.
    10. No, just your TV volume

DO NOT RUN THE MEDIA SETUP ON THE HORIZON BOX DO NOT LET IT SCAN FOR MEDIA
It will cause the Horizon box to freeze

You have to do a full factory reset and not keep any settings when asked

You can still use the media function by going to my devices in library and search best using folders

Cheers for this, will check the resolution setting when I get home, hopefully it's just this!

Cheers for this Paul - so just don't scan, but search by folders instead as in type in directory paths etc?

folks - I had been using UnblockUS for accessing US Netflix with the old UPC router. I now have Horizon, has anyone got this working correctly and if so how ??

Important have you already done media setup and done a scan if you did you will have to do a factory reset
Horizon manual has box will freeze if files of more than 1000 files in library

Factory Reset must be done if you have done this and when asked to keep settings you must say NO

If you did not do media setup your ok

This is how you can tell if you did do media setup and scan
    My Library
    My Video
    My Music
If you see music or videos in either you have done a scan and must do a factory reset

If you see message There is no music or video in your home network
    Then your ok

Use Windows Media Player With sharing setup for music/videos
    Stream allow devices

    or

Download Twonky from website get latest version from Twonky website
Then from upc website in my upc you should see your Twonky licence code
if not call upc 1908 to get your code
Setup Twonky Library for what you want to share

Then to stream media from your PC/Laptop etc
    My Library
    My Devices
    you will see Devices
    Then choose
    Music
    or
    Photos
    or
    Videos
Search By Folder is best and use up/down on remote to select what video you want to play

Note Horizon My Devices Music has limitation at the moment can only play 1 song has no next or previous you have to select what song to play

Videos if you have problem playing a format I suggest you download
The following Vlc Player and install full version

    or
Use sharky007 32 bit and (64bit only if your Pc is 64bit you must install 32bit first)
go to Sharky007 website very important read install instructions first

Note if you install VLC PLAYER OR SHARKY007 after you had already had setup Windows Media Player
    DO THE FOLLOWING
Windows Media Player tools advanced restore media library this will pick up any previous missing videos that did not show up in your Windows Media Player Library as in MKV files
Or if you installed Sharky007 use rebuild library function and also from that program select windows file type Associations to set windows media player to play all video formats

Discussing circmventing regional blocking is not allowed on boards.ie , nor is discussing here of why etc.

Isn't unblockUS a legit site though? its DNS is always fixed unlike when you actually circumvent by renentering patched DNS codes?

As it circumvents copyright though it's a murky area that I'm sure boards.ie want to stay away from.

    Right,
Yesterday, after returning from a few days away the time on the box was wrong and it was totally unresponsive. Internet and phone was working fine however.
    Rebooted via switch at back.
In the past 5 minutes I have tried to go into recordings to start watching The Apprentice. Wont go into the recordings menu, just sits there with half a black screen and half of what is currently on. I suspect that the box isnt even recording it however I wont restart until 10 incase it is, and I would lose it.........
I am not impressed, yet again. I thought we had gone past these issues.
And if it transpires The apprentice isnt recorded I will not be impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,324 ✭✭✭keps

Yeah - I had the entire Apprentice series on 'record' - but went to watch the final episode tonight - and nothing there!

Because I was worried about space left I had deleted previous episodes along with a load of cycling/rugby recordings earlier today.

It seems deleting earlier episodes made 'horizon' think I had no interest in the last one!

Thanks .... not the problem in my case as the printer does have an IP address in the same range as the other devices on the network.

    Have you setup your homegroup
    and shared your printer

BBC 1 and 2 HD were coming up as unsubscribed for me this morning. I rang customer service and the guy said he had received an email about the issue 10 mins. before. He had it fixed in 2 mins. Bad timing for them as the British Open is starting today.

Thanks for reminding me - I was watching it on 'standard' BBC2:rolleyes:

My Aul Lad got his Horizon Box setup yesterday and I popped up today to check it out. I must say compared to his previous UPC setup this is a massive improvement.

The broadband hit 154mb through a wired connection & 75mb wireless checking through speediest.net very impressive.

His TV is still a little buggy & he has UPC engineer calling out to check his connections going into the house, etc. But he is chuffed he got all the Horizon upgrades free for the year. The HD is a major improvement to the naked eye, the golf on Setenta HD looked might impressive today.

I have Sky HD myself & after seeing what UPC have to offer with the Horizon Box, I would definitely consider switching over in the near future.

I'm on a mac. But I can get to all the printer settings by going to the printer's IP address directly . I can see everything, even the ink levels. Also, various LAN Scans from the iPad can see the printer at that IP Address. But I cannot add it as a printer on the Mac, nor as an airplay printer on the iPad. UPC rep tells me it it not a Horizon issue, but it must be ..... it worked perfect with the previous UPC Thompson router.

I had the apprentice also on season record and ditto, didn't record last nights eps either. Previous 5 eps are still on the box. no longer listed in my planner - so wondering did it assume there was only 13eps in the series

suffering from more audio drops for the last couple of nights... really annoying

Tried a On Demand rental a couple of days ago to see what the quality/speed etc. was like.

Looked great (I'm guessing 720p not 1080p, but not too compressed) and started streaming after maybe 5 seconds or so. My only slight issue is the length of the rental period. Other services I've tried offer - say - "24" or "48" hour rentals, but in reality might be 26 / 50. The reason being, lots of people will watch TV at the same time every day - when they get home from work etc. With a 24 hour rental, I can only watch something once, or if I have to pause it, won't be able to finish watching it the second day. With a ~26 hour rental, I can.

The UPC On Demand rentals are (almost exactly) 48 hours. It'd be nice if they either extended this by a few hours, or at least enabled you to finish watching if you start playing it within the rental period. I was watching the rental towards the end of the 48 hours and it just stopped dead mid-film. Also the on-screen error was corrupted (two errors popped up on-screen at the same time).
