Approx 300 will be left at this stage.

my guess was 30 for each day between the 3rd and the 10th so that makes 210 people if I'm not mistaken? That would give roughly a 25% chance of employment for those who applied for both the army and the navy competitions and roughly 12.5% for those who applied for just the one :) Whoever is the first to be tested in this thread could you take a headcount and post it on here when you're finished so we'll have a better idea of the numbers?

Anyone have any idea what the "realistic job preview" will be? I have this unshakeable image of drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from full metal jacket giving us a not so pleasant wake up call at 4.30am for a nice leisurely 5mile run

No, the Irish Defence forces does not have gunnery sergeants :)

I doubt anyone going for a cadetship with the enthusiasm to go onto the internet and monitor forums etc on the competition are the kind of candidates who want the job for a good wage and a gucci corner office in Dublin.

There are many other reasons why one might want to become an Army officer.

Theres about 80 interviewed after the next stage for the 35 places. well that's what there was last time I was there. The job preview is just a scenario your given and you have to come up with a solution with limit resources and time, both alone and then as a team of 4-5.

Really? It must change a lot. Last year there was 105 interviewed. I think other years it was 100 on the dot.

Job Preview is when cadets and YO's give you presentations on what the job is really like.

What you're thinking of is the group exercise ;)

Can anyone give examples of what was asked in the group assessment? Or advice even? Seems as though it's really the major deciding factor on who goes through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭SplitCartridge

    That would be telling ;)

Or perhaps showing a sense of selflessness and comradery, the kind of traits any hopeful cadet would strive to convey.. ;)

That applies when you are a cadet. Your comrades will be your fellow cadets, your selflessness will be towards your class and the Defence Forces - not your competition.

Believe me, for ye lads going for it, the less information ye make public on forums like these that can help other candidates who otherwise might not have held up as well in the competition as you might have, the better!

Its called a competition for a reason. Because that's what it is. If ye want to help each other out, fair enough. But I'd keep as much of it in PM's as possible if I were you guys.

EDIT: I'm not trying to put anyone down. I actually think your attitude to helping each other out is utterly commendable. Its just it could be quite a bummer to find out that Johnny Bloggs got through and you didn't, and you meet Johnny Bloggs at some stage in your life (perhaps in the next cadet class when Johnny Bloggs is senior to you) and Johnny says he didn't know much about the group stage, he just nicked it all from lads conversing on boards.ie

Crack on lads and best of luck. Also, keep us posted if ye get through. ;)

Hey I was wondering if it would be possible to change the date of your fitness test as mine is Wednesday and I've been sick all weekend. And who would I contact to do this as I'm worried it'll effect my performance in the team assessments if I'm dosed.

Lads ye'd get a better response on that if ye throw an ol' comment each up on the DF facebook.

Its up to you. If you think you can do it then do it. But remember if you show weakness before or during the run, they'll take you out. Of the race that is :)

Doctor said absolutely no way so I suppose I better take his advice. Ah well, next year maybe. Best of luck to all still involved

Does the doctor consent have to be your doctor? As I'm living away from home and would mean I have to get extra time off work to travel home and get the letter sorted.

    Any doctor can do it.

Just was talking to a lad who thought that the interview will be taking place after the fitness test/group exercise but during the same overnight stay (i.e. sometime before you leave the next morning). I said I thought the people who get through the overnight assessment would be called back for interview on a later occasion, can anyone put me straight on that one? Thanks
