whats the fuss over the htc button?

it doesnt appear to do anything on my phone?

there is apparently a sensor behind it so when the stock rom gets released, it might be needed

With stock rom it doesnt do anything, but with a custom kernel, it can be used to turn on the phone(e.g. wake it from sleep)

My only real criticism of the phone is the button which is either too insensitive, or recessed too low, making it tricky to turn on. Having an alternate would be nice.

A representitive from HTC confirmed that this isn't a capacitive button.

Myth/Question #1: The HTC Logo is a capacitive key that can be programmed as an extra input option.

A: There is an XDA video showing a user who mapped this HTC logo to respond to button presses. Even with that video- this is false. There is no capacitive sensor located in that area. The XDA user programmed the final row of pixels (or a couple rows) located in the middle of the phone to be accessed as a keypress. There is no hardware supporting capacitive touch in this location (one of the engineers showed me the opened up device personally).

There's also a picture knocking around showing the backside of the bezel. It shows the capacitive panels behind the back and home keys but not behind the HTC logo.

Currently, in 4.2.2, the home button serves 3 functions. Tap for home, hold for app switching, slide up for Google Now.

Just got a One yesterday evening. Quick q, say I'm no a normal screen (not blinkfeed) with a normal black background, in the notification are everything looks fine but if I go back to blinkfeed where the clock is or in to settings, it's like a light appears over the notification area. This isn't normal is it? It's just strange that on any other screen it seems okay!

    I've attached a screenshot too!

@petes Same thing on mine, assume its 'normal' for the HTC sense interface

Just looked up some pictures of the apps screen and seems to be the case alright. Just wanted to check before I bought it back!

Sorry, you're correct. I should have clarified the different between releases.

On 4.1 it's : Tap for Home, double tap for app switching and hold for Google Now
On 4.2 it's: Tap for Home, double tap for app switching, hold for menu and slide up for Google Now.

    Can anyone recommend one ??

    Yep.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CINTBQQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's not cheap but it's excellent. Not need for a screen protector, and every button and port is accessible. It's a quality product with lovely real leather and looks like it'll be robust too.

I had a cheap flip cover, but it wasn't good. The plastic guides that held the phone in place cracked and broke off within a few weeks.

Any sign of the OTA update for 4.2 on Irish networks yet?

Bought a black one yesterday, toilet diving had eventually caught up with the One X. Finding Boards a lot slower on Chrome on this versus the One X. HTC Browser seems to have weird rendering issues as well. Hate the lack of a menu button. Sound is fantastic, it always was very poor on the X.Don't actually hate Blinkfeed.. surprised. Love the look of the black, which is a reverse on the X for me. Unfortunately, I've stuck it in an otterbox. It was the only case I could find in the shops and I don't trust it not to look like **** without it.

Wow.. I have a one X and can't wait to rid it for a new "one". The new one is just so much more appealing to me, the one X is starting to annoy me battery/performance wise. Did you try Chrome Beta? How much did it cose you?

Try holding down the power phone on your phone until it completely powers down and restarts. It might help

No, I think it's because you have powersave mode enabled. It takes into account the ambient conditions or battery state or something like that and disables this backlight. Search this thread it was discussed before on here.

Herself got the official HTC case for her One. To be honest, it's crap.

Plastic at the top and bottom is flaking, occasionally the case muffles the microphone so people can't hear her when she's talking, fold over flap doesn't sit flush, constantly letting things slide between the case and phone.

    :(

Isn't buying a case for the HTC one a bit like buying a Ferrari then rapping it in lino?

No it's not a bit like that actually as they don't manufacture custom made lino protective shells for ferrari's, ferrari's aren't made of a Matt easily scratched aluminium unibody and I'm yet to hear of someone dropping their Ferrari from their pocket.

To be honest I agree with Alpha Dog. Saying that though I am going to have to get a case for it as much as I don't want to. Had the One X and never put a case on it. Screen was still scratch less the day it died.

Im not worried about scratching the screen. Just looked at my HTC desire Z and the screen is perfect nearly 3 years on. Im concerned about the brushed aluminium. Although I do appreciate the sentiment. It reminds me a bit of one of my dotty old aunts who used to leave the plastic on the sofa to keep it looking nice, but it looked crap with the plastic on it.

With a clear gel case, it's still a striking phone.

The iPhone 4 is the only other phone I've put a cover on. Really hate them, but I don't trust metal phones and especially the anodized finish on the black. It does feel great, but give me a good quality plastic any day. The screen on my X is cracked and scratched, but the shell looks brand new.

Having had the phone a day I've decided that if I could take the speaker arrangement, IR blaster, internals from the One and combine it with the unibody polycarbonate, the 720P screen (a great screen which has power and performance savings over its successor) and three button layout from the X, I'd have my perfect phone.
