Politicians are only part of the problem here.

The other problem is the head in the sand electorate, who have deluded themselves into thinking that we can cut our huge deficit without making substantial cuts and tax increases across the board.

If there was an election tomorrow and a politician said "no more cuts" then people would vote for them on that basis. And those people would be fools.

Yes indeed. Liars and fools BUT who's paying but the fools.

Because people actually think that a new party is going to come in and make things all magically better.

New party or not we still have a huge deficit that has to be fixed.

Unless this new party is going to find a gold mine in the midlands then there are going to be tax increases and cuts made.

Time for people to get real. We are spending a lot more than we are taking in. It doesn't take a genius to work out that this is not good. Anyone who tells people that they can fix this issue without reducing outgoings and increasing incomings is an outright liar.

Yes indeed. Truthful politics is a myth. We can trust nobody.

We have to wait and see if things will get better. We have been drip fed tidbits of positive news in recent times but its early days yet.

If there really is no alternative path it is only because we are too far gone, having signed up to the bailout and the previous government having taken on debt they shouldnt have. Still the current crowd could have done more to try and offload the debt to Europe instead of simply saying 'Yes Sir' to whatever the lads in Europe wanted. Which for them is an easy way out really.

If there was an election tomorrow I wouldnt know who to vote for. The big parties are just more of the same and the rest are just too outlandish altogether.

The debt was lumped onto us in order to save the rich cronies and golfing acquaintances of politicians.

"It is morally wrong, unjust and unfair to tax a persons home"

Every lazy-ass socialist is going round shouting this line. It was said in 1994. would you like a list of things that are different between Ireland 1994 and Ireland 2013??

Yes indeed. It hurts the FG party to see the U-turn their leader has taken. That's probably why it's seen so much.
Of course any post criticising people for posting the quote will be thanked by the party members too. The same list appear ad nauseam after any post supporting the tax.

Didnt pay either. I never got a letter and didnt register online so it will be interesting to see what Revenue will bill me for considering a house has not sold in my area (very rural) in the last 2 years.

Anyway I became a shareholder with this group http://www.attackthetax.com/index.html

Dont know if any good will come of it but I am in a fighting mood at the moment so will stick with it for the time being. :D

This rhetoric is pretty tiring. Again it's back to this head in the sand notion that people think the debt can be cleared without affecting them personally.

Indeed you are right as it is only us it's effecting. They were even paid interest on their gambling losses it seems.

FG were saying it right up to the day they got elected.

There is nothing socialist about not wanting property tax. 'All the land belongs to the government' is more of a loony left concept.

    "We will clean up politics"
    "We will end cronyism"
"Roscommon hospital will not lose it's services"
    "Not another cent"
"It is morally wrong, unjust and unfair to tax a persons home"

    etc etc etc
    I don't believe that was a pre-election promise.

Let's not also forget that each party presents their manifesto to the people pre-election, the reality is that matters change due to unforeseen matters, changing priorities and not least the compromise that is required when a coalition Government has to be formed, particularly where the parties have different philosophies

I paid too. In the end if they don't get it from you they will get it from your children + mega penalties when you pass on. Sad but true.

Had to pay. Mainly for tax clearance reasons. Don't agree with it however.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,987 ✭✭✭Kerrigooney

    I didn't register because I don't agree with it.

I know they'll steal it one way or another but I'm not gonna do anything to help the pricks.

This poll seems to imply choice.

    Taxes are not optional.

If you buy a pair of jeans, you can't choose to pay VAT.

If you own a house, you can't choose not to pay the LPT.

What if you already own the jeans?

    Honest is dead.

People in this country are not ready for truthful politics. What chance has a successful business person have of getting voted into the Dail? Little to none. Most people still want the man or woman who will sort out a quicky medical card for them or help them out with planning permission or they vote for X because their parents did. The rest whinge about politicians and vote in politicians who spend their time in the Dail whinging.

I have no property in this country, so I may be wrong on this but are they not just going to take it from your pay or social welfare or what that just a threat?

No was not an idle threat. Said those deductions could start as early as next month

i'd like to see the first batch of rabblerousers get dumped in a prison for a few days to be made an example of, and perhaps some community service. After that I can see the rest of them falling into place

Would this be before or after the bankers and politicians that caused the mess?

They should just relocate the Dail to Pyongyang and be done with it.

Didn't you say previously that you weren't liable for the LPT?

Or any politicians themselves. Some of them deserve prison for treason, putting their cronies before their country and people.

Who would you say such a thing? Are you familiar with life in that country at all and that regime? Surely, you are not suggesting that the introduction of this socialist tax bring us on a par with the horrific life in that country?

I disagree, morality is completely subjective. I'm sure you could find quotes from people you respect saying that mixed-race marriages are morally wrong.

If things were either right or wrong, then nothing would ever change. Quoting a 20 year old statement doesn't add any weight to your argument because it comes across as petty.

How many things did you believe 20 years ago that you don't believe now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 57,077 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

They just hate that statement being quoted Sam. Drives them mad.
Is Enda still on that roundabout? If so he might come back to that statement again.

I believed only two years ago that FG opposed an unfair recurring family home tax. They even went so far in the manifesto to say:

Fianna Fail’s proposal, now endorsed by the Labour Party, to introduce by 2014 an annual, recurring residential property tax on the family home is unfair

we will empower local authorities to put in place, following the 2014 local elections, fairer alternatives to Fianna Fail’s and Labour’s recurring annual tax on the family home

Mislead the electorate, FF/Labour = bad.

Ah Sam but that was before Enda met Angela.
Those wee pats on the head were romantic.
Our wee dog used to lie down on his back with his paws in the air hoping to get his belly scratched too.

Socialism is alive and well in this country.

Sadly it only applies to debt, not wealth.

    Apple/Google will agree.

If a couple earn €35,000 or under, they can defer payment. (With 8% interest, which is way too high)

As for taking it out of your social welfare payments by force, surely most people on social welfare are on under €35,000?

There would be a certain percentage who are over that amount when you include the value of the extras they get.
