That's a sure way to remove a pike's lower jaw. I've seen pictures of jawless pike thanks to those tools your cousin is using. They're unnecessary and barbaric.

Pike is on the way to the taxidermist so relax it was dead. That was just for a picture also it was weighted in a bag with the same tool.

Nice! It gets better. Why post at all?

Don't understand killing a pike of any size but of that size it's an old pike should've been returned
All to get it stuffed to just gloat for a few mins is ridiculous
Picture of the fish would've been a lot more appreciated by anglers than killing it
Also pretty sure killing a pike over 3kgs or 50 cm in illegal now

Can't see the picture... I guess the idiot has removed it?

Looks like it, shame because it was a fine looking fish :(

The tool he had to hold the fish with looked like a similar one they use when fishing for Goliath tiger fish

Brazzil, if we take the time to use proper handling and care, we all get to catch more fish. As Dodderangler said, it is prohibited to kill any pike greater than 50 cm in length

Thats the plan for it anyway, theres plenty of lakes close to me with pike in them which are unfishable from the shore. It'll be a nice way of fishing anyway.

I was out on a small lake today on the maiden voyage and it was drifting very fast with the wind, very hard to fish with lures so I will have to get an anchor trolley kit and maybe a drouge over time to make the most of it, I was surprised by how fast you can move around in it, lovely way to get about.

If you are into the shooting, it'd be a great job for the ducks also.

I must give a proper kayak a go. I have pike fished from a Canadian canoe before and ended up in the water twice....I'm a bit too top heavy to be swinging a rod in one of them :D

Keep us updated on the project.
    A.

Drogue will slow you right down drifting. Even a feed bag or something similar with cord at either end to tether it to the kayak will do for a start, doesn't have to be a shop-bought one... Anchor is essential for fishing spots where you want to stay for a while

Its an eerie feeling being right in at the bottom of the cliffs of moher on a kayak I can tell you, It was a lovely day for it all the same though.

Id imagine anchoring up in a yak 30foot from them during the summer should produce good fishing. Just watch out for the flying leads and feathers from up above lol

Ah it was only a small one really but nice to see something on the end of the line again, things should pick up in the next few weeks when the macks show up again and the pollock return. I stuck to mainly lure fishing last year and I found a few great marks which have never seen a rod and line and im hoping to try bottom fishing these to see what else they hold but the most of them are like a desert at the moment.

Well I can offically say the pollock are landed and what a fish to start the year, took my lure on the first cast before I even started my retrieve and gave me a right run around on a 10-30 gram spinning rod. Not too far from being a double and my best shore pollock to date. Size 11 shoe for scale :D

Looks like a rainbow trout to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Was going to say a salmon parr but it looks like a very young rainbow trout escapee from a farm
It's tail and dorsal is fairly mashed up so it gives me impression of a farmed trout

    salmon parr id say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭Auldloon

Escapee farmed salmon smolt I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭con___manx1

    definitely a salmon par.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,200 ✭✭✭BoarHunter

hmmmm ... wouldn't a Salmon parr have the typical zebra dark spots ?

Could be a smolt, they seem to go silver, have a video of putting him back, could put it on youtube and send you the link
Seems to be a bit of a mystery

I think its a Salmon Smolt the parr turn silver before they go back to sea. I caught one last week.

    Salmon Smolt no question

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,166 ✭✭✭✭Zzippy

Salmon smolt. Also easily confused with a sea trout smolt, but in this case the position of the jaw, single large spot on the operculum (gill plate), length of the pectoral fin, coloration of the adipose fin and forked tail shows its definitely a salmon. Smolts are very late migrating to sea this year due to the cold spring. Let's hope the lice levels on farms are low this year and they get past them safely...

Well at first glance I thought it was a Salmon but when I zoomed in it seems to have a pinkish tinge running along its side (unless my screen is a bit off) so I wonder could it be a Rainbow?
