Yeah, that looks pretty much like it. I'm not sure what exactly is included in the OTA regarding your bootloader or radio, but you could probably update via OTA then unlock bootloader etc.

I can't see any reason why you need to flash the firmware zip.

Bear in mind aroma is a nightmare on the One, so flashing can be an effort. Worth it though.

Yeah I've heard Aroma is fairly sketchy alright and some patience is required.

One more question do I need to flash boot.img at any stage or is that now obsolete?

Nope, boot.img can be flashed as part of the rom, at least with TrickDroid. No longer do you have to be tied to a pc to try a new ROM

Have many people rooted this phone? Have rooted the last two Galaxys before with no issue but the idea of a HTC One intimidates me! Is it hard?

OK so I think I've unlocked the bootloader and flashed CWM recovery. What is there to do now? I would like to customize the look of my phone a bit and maybe install some non market apps. Nothing too hectic.

Any ideas on what to do are greatly appreciated!

Well first thing you should probably nandroid backup your current rom, then maybe find a ROM that tickles your fancy.

If you want to customise the look with a theme or something similar, most would work on all Sense ROMs, they're all on the same base I think.

I've done a few weather themes replacing the bland Sense ones. They have gone one extreme to the other.

Sorry for being a Newby here now, but what is rooting the phone? And bootloader?

In simple terms, rooting the phone enables you to access the root directory of the phone, which would normally be protected. Some of the more popular apps that use root would be titanium backup, root explorer and ad blockers.

The main reason to unlock your bootloader would be to flash a custom ROM.

So glad I bought HTC one now, getting better the longer I have it. You really need two months with a phone to properly assess it.

Haha yeah and about 6 months to properly get sick of it. Getting this phone in the next few days, will be interesting to see how it compares with my s3.

So, typically when you buy a phone you only have access to the data partition of your phone. This allows you to save pictures and apps and all that junk on your phone's memory, as you would expect.

    But there are also other partitions on your phone which you cannot write to;
    /boot
    /system
    /recovery
    /data
    /cache
    /misc

The /boot, /system and /recovery partitions are locked from write access. But, guess what, to flash a custom ROM you need to be able to write to these partitions. The ROM is stored in /system; a custom ROM replaces the stock ROM.

To flash a ROM you need to use a custom recovery installed on the /recovery partition. And to flash a custom recovery you need an unlocked bootloader.

Finally, the bootloader is the basic operating system of your phone. Think of it as similar to the BIOS on your computer.

Phone arrived yesterday afternoon and within a few hours I had TrickDroid successfully installed.

Aroma did freeze on me on my first attempt and I had to use adb to reboot and followed the other TrickDroid FAQ directions before reattempting flashing.

Saw a tip on XDA thread that giving each Aroma screen a few seconds before continuing might help and made it as far as the completion page on my 2nd attempt where again Aroma decided to freeze for about 45 minutes. The device was no longer being detected on my laptop so I couldn't force reboot it and the hardware power off button would not work for that period. Eventually while waiting for the battery to run dead I tried holding the power button again and it magically restarted the phone and while at first I was bit unsure whether it had been a botched install everything seemed to be ok.

Had a few further teething issues with some apps updating (market reporting could not download due to '920 error code'). Force stopped the Market app cleared data and cache, uninstalled updates and rebooted and after a couple of repeats of this it eventually resolved itself. So far everything running well. Dead happy.

Haven't bothered flashing the tweaks or themes yet. Another battle with Aroma is sort of putting me off for now. I'm pretty happy with standard tweaks delivered in TrickDroid but will review what's available and see if there's anything additional that would make it worthwhile. Maybe Basil3 or other TrickDroiders can let me know their own recommendations?

As it may be useful to others here is the list of steps to follow.
    • Boot phone and skip setup process (no point completing as you will soon wipe)
    • Run OTA update
    • Unlock Bootloader
    • Run <code>adb erase cache</code>
    • Temp boot Custom Recovery (TWRP) and create Nandroid Backup (just so I have the original stock ROM available)
    • Move Nandroid Backup off device
    • Run <code>adb erase cache</code>
    • Install Custom Recovery (TWRP in my case)
    • Copy ROM to sdcard (TrickDroid for me)
    • Run wipe script
    • Flash Rom (If aroma freezes follow steps in TrickDroid FAQ)
    • Boot
    • Reboot into recovery
    • Flash tweaks
    • Flash themes
    • Boot
    • Enjoy!

Why would you want to flash a custom ROM ? What advantage is there in doing so ?

There are many improvements but for me the main advantages are improved battery life and additional tweaks (such as the menu button fix) and mods like Advanced Power Menu and Extended Quick Settings

    252950.png

The downsides are (A) requires tech savvy user (B) no OTA updates (C) small possibility you could mess things up.

The updates on Custom ROMs woudl be far faster than waiting for the carrier to update them

Agreed but quite often if the base has changed it's not very easy to make the step up without wiping some data

P.S. I resized my images so maybe you can remove the large ones from your quotes ;)

To be honest, my phone is a bit of a mess with loads of various zips flashed testing out my own mods or testing trickdroid stuff before they release it, so I almost forget the benefits of the tweaks and themes zips!

As of today, tweaks and themes are now all in one zip. The main reasons I flash it are increased folder size to 5x5, app drawer grid size increase to 6x5, lower autobrightness mod and volume wake mod. Some of these might come standard on rom, can't remember! I have heard that they are take loads of options out of the base rom so people don't have so much trouble flashing, possibly remove aroma altogether.

So far, I've flashed a few new bases and haven't required a wipe at all. No doubt will have to at some stage.

This now seems to be a well known issue with AROMA. The recommended short term solution is to avoid touching the screen .Control AROMA with hardware buttons only (VOL+, VOL-, POWER). Hope that helps anyone following irishbuzz's advice

FYI Volume wake mod is part of base TrickDroid but the others are not included

I haven't used Aroma myself, but I've seen nothing but complaints about it, seems to defeat the entire purpose.

It's only an incompatibility issue with the One, which will be rectified eventually. I still think the positives outweigh the negatives, I don't have the problems that a lot of people seem to be reporting.

Does anyone know of any bricks and mortar store in the Jervis Street area that are selling cases for the One? I'm waiting on HTC to distribute their non-red version of the double dip cover but would like to pick up something cheap in the meantime.

That was my point though, surely the entire point of Aroma is to negate compatibility issues? The One's been out for how long now?

No, the point of Aroma is to be able to select various options while installing a ROM or theme. For example, I did an Aroma zip with multiple different weather clock backgrounds, and multiple different clock digits, so people could mix and match any way they wanted.....you can't do that without aroma.

This is the first phone I've had where I see no reason to root whatsoever. Previously I always wanted a stock experience as light as possibly to free up space, ram and battery life. But with this phone sense feels light anyway, there is **** loads of ram and plenty of memory for apps etc. My advice to virgin rooters would be to use the phone as is for a year, then root and experiment for the second year at which point you will probably renew your phone.

Aesthetics like 5x5 folders etc is a ridiculous reason to go to the hassle of rooting and voiding your warranty.

In addition, a lot of companies will adopt byod (bring your own device) schemes in the near future where employees have the option to use their own phones for work. I would never do this, but less neurotic paranoid people might like the idea of one device for personal corporate use. The software used to manage the devices can detect rooted phones and expressly forbid them.

One for the future maybe but you heard it here first.

They are trying to circumvent security issues by having employees with really smart devices capable of vpn etc..

You're right, people should only root if they have a need. The phone is very good as stock.

Rooting doesn't void warranty, plenty of people have had rooted phones repaired under warranty.....have no idea why people still keep going on about this. 5x5 folder wouldn't be the reason anyone roots, it's an added bonus. On top of this, it's hardly a hassle.

I accept your points but whereas now they will still repair rooted phones, and certainly you can unroot before sending the phone off, I can see predatory phone companies revising this policy in the future, particularly as rooting becomes the paradigm.

On the 5x5 folder thing, someone mentioned that above.

And in my experience, no matter how tech savvy you are, you still need to do plenty of reading before rooting and it can be stressful if you are not too sure about it. I've done it plenty of time but with HTC in particular, you come across terms like s-off etc which can confuse you again. Then you have to download reasonably large roms over data connections that may not be the best and put them in the appropriate place to flash, there is plenty of room for error.

Could of sworn I saw someone say only the other day that the primary purpose of Aroma was cross compatibility, either here or on XDA.

Whether or which, the process of rooting is enough of a pain in the arse without having to use something else that doesn't even work properly. But, like the person above, I'm happy with stock, or at least stock+root. Any ROMs I've tried have either frustrated me or bored me.

But of course each to their own. If someone wants to run a ROM or not is their business and no-one else's.

Have my HTC One a few weeks now on 3.

Anyone else have an issue with the location on HTC clock? It always says "My Location". Could of sworn it said Dublin at some point. Same was happening for a friend of mine on vodafone but an update a week or 2 ago seem to sort it out.

The update fixed that for me. I'm not on a 3 branded phone though.

Did you get an ota update?
