In a HTC One fanboy-esque moment checkout The Verge video review of the S4. Mostly good but ultimately he said he'd buy a One.

I think we made the right choice with the HTC One, teething troubles or not.

That seems to be the general consensus, Engadget, Anandtech, Pocketnow, Gizmodo especially slated the S4.

The only places that seem to rate the S4 higher are gsmarena and phonearena, coincidentally they were also the 1st to post reviews on it and they were skin deep at best.

Anandtech weren't wildly enthused, but they certainly didn't slate the s4. If anything, they slated the s3 in their s4 review.

I was fondling one over in the UK and it's a nice phone but I think some of the ui differences might be a bit too much like work for me. Still, my new phone criteria goes:

    Battery life.

    Battery life.

    Battery life.

    Battery life, and

    Battery life.

Any phone that expects to be charged more than once every 2 days can forget about it. Tired of getting less than a full day's use out of a phone.

Note 2 is probably the phone for you, or get a s3 or s4 and buy a replacement battery. Spare batteries for the s3 can be got for a few quid.

But why two days? Do you not get a chance to charge when you sleep?

Some people will exhaust the One's battery in a day, other's in 3. It depends on your usage as to whether you will get two days or not.

I work on the principle that I've never sat with the S2 in my hand and thought "Damn I wish this had an extra Ghz or 2 more cores", but I sit and look at it every day and thing "How long have I got left?"

Phones don't need to run GTA3 but they do need to stop sucking batteries like mad.

Apologies If this has been mentioned already but my internet is dead slow this evening and it would take ages to read back. I'm wondering is anyone else s phone frequently roaming. I've noticed it quite a bit over the last few days. I'm with three but I still have my old iPhone and I've checked a few times in different places. When it has the R on the One it has full 3G on the iPhone so its not a network issue. It's a pain because the data connection turns off when this happens. My phone is sim free bought from amazon.

So the Cyanogenmod team have posted an initial Alpha release for the One.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248116

Be careful here, as h8rift states it's not suitable for everyday use. Only for interest sake. The good thing is that developers are beginning to get on board with the device. Hopefully the ROM choices wil get fluffed out with vanilla and AOKP options.

In other news there appears to be an update on its way to European users which includes some camera improvements

Now, perhaps it's my fault for not doing my research but I thought we already had this update on our devices. Anyway, we'll see as it begins rolling out next week. It will also be interesting to see if the updates are handled by the carriers or HTC themselves. I know what I'd like!

I am leaning towards this case since it doesnt cover the beauty of the One but my only worry is that it might not offer great protection.

I got an Otterbox Commuter one from Amazon.

It's the slimmest of the Otterbox covers, but it's still quite bulky.

I had a S2 and compared to that, the HTC One with Otterbox Commuter is much larger.

The Poetic one above looks much slimmer.

    Here you go http://www.three.ie/online/shop/productDetail.aspx?src=p&p=voice&pid=1206&tariffType=contract

People need to get past the idea that they're going to get a week of battery life out of a phone. Would you expect your laptop to last two days if it was constantly on?

I agree. Even with my Note 2, I would charge every night, even though I could last two days if I had to. I just didn't like starting a day without a full charge.

That said, I think the next big push will be for advancements in battery tech.

I did a query for updates and this is available. 228MB. Downloading now.

I'm on Vodafone by the way.

i think i have the first one there. have been meaning to buy another one. it seems pretty good, fairly grippy and protective, but the fit is almost too snug. along the top and bottom edges the case doesn't come over the case quite as far as at the corner. will provide pics if i get a chance.

Dammit no sign of update for me! i'm seriously thinking of rooting phone and updating it myself. Why are Three so slow letting these things out in the wild - I always did that with my S2 but i was afraid to with the one as its so new and shiny haha.

What is the firmware number after update?

I know with custom roms we have gone something like:

    1.28.xxx.xxx
    1.29.xxx.5
    1.29.xxx.7
    1.29.xxx.12
    1.29.xxx.13

I get around 12MB download with VF at home and around .12 with 3 sometimes... .5MB on a good day but I needed to look after my allowance on VF so used 3. I'll let you know next week :-)

I have the unlocked version of the phone and no sign of an update for me yet. I have just moved from an iphone where all the updates came at the same time!
Are the updates network provider dependent?
