Ah they do though. Ive criticised them in the past but they do. Not enough but they do. Ultan Dillane now with Connacht came through the youths, JJ, through the schools. They do go there and across the countrys

Not to extent they could. Youths system could be much better

Lydon didn't make the Leinster 20's, Played 21's with Lansdowne where he shared time with a 10 from Newbridge left Lansdowne to go to Seapoint and now off to Stade Academy which is not much of an academy by the way but it is the only one he is being offerd played AIL in division 2 or whatever Seapoint are in and hasn't got the rest of Ireland clammering for his signature. Good luck to the chap but don't be fooled into thinking this is as glamourous as it sounds. living in Paris in a club house with 4 or 5 others on very little money is not very appealling. I hope it works out for him
Slightly harsh CGD. Stade's academy is a pro academy and maybe irish sides have been looking for his signature but he turned them down?

I know of at least 3 1a clubs looking for 10's and he wasnt in the mix for any of them. Didn't mean it to be harsh just that it is not like he is a marquee player that is being let slip thru the system. He has been in the system and dropped out of it only time will tell if people were wrong to pass on him. I don't know the chap personally but he did look the business coming out of Kilkenny College and as I said and like all young Irish lads going abroad I really hope it works outwell for him!!

Not overlooked as such. He played for Leinster in a development game a year or two ago so was on the radar but didn't go any further. I think he had a trial in Bath last season too but didn't get a contract.

He's a good player and I hope it goes great for him but there's a big, big difference between AIL and Pro12. Paul O'Donohue was arguably the best player in the AIL for a year or two, for example, but always struggled with the higher standard of pro rugby.

Fingers crossed he tears it up in Connacht.

So in your opinions, what does it take to be a modern day professional rugby player?

Talent and hard work. Bit of luck to avoid injury and the right attitude.

You might want to actually ask a pro rugby player that one!

    backs straight out of school?

    Brewer, Byrne or McKeon?

a year in the sub suggests Daly imo.

Hearing mixed messages on Tom Daly. Think we are being too picky if we don't take him in.

    Contracts out interviews next week

Daly, Dardis, Dooley, Crosbie, Moloney And they keep saying Byrne which was thought to be Ross Byrne but no is Adam Byrne who was already in academy as far as I knew but think he was offered academy at Christmas earlier than any one else and only takes it up with the other lads. Sub academy for 10 or so others

    Ross Molony or Rory Moloney?

sub-academy spots, maybe for Ross Byrne, Conor McKeon, Harrison Brewer, Josh Murphy, Oisin Heffernan

Is Ross Moloney not the 4th year lock from Michaels? Or am I getting mixed up?

    Rory is the Roscrea flanker?

James Ryan is the 4th year lock, Ross Molony is the 6th year lock, probably 6'5. Ireland under 19 this year, pretty undersized.

Might be the case like Thornbury where he needs to get into the gym and pack on the weight. No point in wasting a year.

Rory is roscrea yeah. Great player.

Wouldn't call Moloney undersized. He's 6'6 and well over the 100kg mark, I'm sure he'll bulk up loads with a year of Academy, cause you're right, Thornbury is a great build now.

He looked very skinny next to roscrea's Sean O'Brien.

from what Ive heard theres going to be tier one and tier two of the sub academy. Tier one will do weights as part of the sub academy but do field sessions with the academy. Tier two will do weights and field sessions as the sub academy. Its either this or something very similar, not 100%sure about the details yet
He looked very skinny next to roscrea's Sean O'Brien.

yeah I agree a bit more weight will help him get over the gainline more.

I think a lot of people would look small next to him :pac: but you're right yeah, good to see him to pack on a bit of muscle.

True my point was that in the recent England game, Molony was small next to a few of Englands forwards.

Not a surprise, very few Irish forwards are that big that young.

one lad england brought on,david hughes, would have looked big in a senior game. COmplete mutant

Ross Moloney is 6' 6" for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭lurtz

he's not that tall I dont think, between 6'4 and 6'5 Id say. James hart just signed a two year deal with grenoble

Excuse the amateur hour question, but how do the offers to provinces academy's actually work?

Is it based on what province you live in, or just personal preference or just who actually offers you a contract?

I ask because I've seen on here Maloney the Roscrea back row was rumoured to be possibly getting a leinster academy place....yet SOB II is already going to the Connacht academy, did he turn down Leinster or does he live in Galway and want Connacht or whats the story?

Not based on province you live in. Depends on the academy that offers you a deal. SOB II is from Galwey. In school in Roscrea but had been in Calsanctius Oranmore until 2/3 years ago. Been playing with Connacht u18-20 the past 2 years.
Ultan Dillane from Tralee is in the Connacht academy. He had been Munster youths and Munster 19s and wasn't offered a deal with Munster and Connacht were interested so he signed with Connacht. Where players go to college may also play a role

Alan O'Connor played allhis rugby for Skerries then Leinster was in Leinster sub academy but went to Ulster academy this year. Presume he wasn't offered by Leinster so Ulster picked him up

Leinster are fairly picky on height with second rows, Kearney and O'Connor were both 6'4/5 and both were passed over.

Beirne and Thornbury are both 6'6 plus and were offered spots.

Could have something to do with Beirne playing for Lansdowne and Thornbury being at UCD as well

Kearney played for Tarf and O'Connor was a UCD man until he left for Ulster.

Nothing to do with their clubs and far more to do with their height imo.
