First monthly medal of the year in Ballykisteen. 38 points off 19. 22 points on the front including 2 birdies (5th hole where i knocked in a 10 footer and the 8th hole where I hit a super second shot over the water to leave myself 2 and a half feet from the hole), only 16 points on the back though (scratched 16 and 18).
Afaik a medal competition in golf is stroke.

Not necessarily. Only some of ours are strokeplay. For the record I went around in 89 strokes. Both my scratches were triples.

35 points off 15 today. Surprised that I actually got that much cause I felt I was playing pretty bad.

What a cracking day to be out on the golf course though ! :D

Pretty sure medal means stroke, or at least that what it used to mean, maybe Ballykissteen is at the cutting edge of golfing vocabulary and the rest of us are yet to catch up, anyway nice shooting.

30 off 18 in Castlemartyr today, happy enough considering the greens have just been hollow tined and they were a nightmare, 34 won our 4 ball off 14, very happy with my game, my RAZR Hawk 5 wood is the best investment I ever made. Putting was a nightmare, ball hobbling all over the greens, not going to let that upset me as I had only one three putt in Mahon on Thursday. Hitting the ball cleaner than I ever have, reckon I'll have 40+ on Tuesday if I can putt well and keep my drives straight.

35 points off 12 today. First competition off the blues this year. Mighty weather for it. Short game saved me, driving wasn't the best.Greens are still heavily sanded too.

Played lisheen springs course today. played off 18. went around in 83. 42 points. Won by 7 points. Play with the society out of work. Happy with that.

Played in a 3 ball champagne scramble.Great day for it even though we were 1.5 hours late teeing off due to frost. Got on the card 15 times(2 to count) with 45 points contributed.
All I learnt was I wish I could get away off the box...

played 12 holes on friday and was 1 over par. 1 birdie, 2 bogeys, 9 pars. Great to get out and play some solid golf after how the West went down, lol :D

37pts off 14 for me in Moate this morning, heavily sanded greens didnt put me off at all and I had a good solid round. Unfortunately I still had far too many 1 pointers (5) but on the up side I bagged 3 birdies which I was particularly pleased with.

36 points yesterday. playing off 13. Bit disappointed, 2 scratches and 4 one pointers meant I had a lot more in me, but it leaves me hopefull that I can get to single figures this year.

Bummed though that SS was 35 points and I'm not going to loose 0.3 cause of placing

33 points off 8 with 3 scratches. had 3 pointers on index 2-7 so happy enough in that respect.
placing finished so qualifier proper yesterday. i was in the bubble so nothing lost or gained.

For us medal means that you win a medal if you win your class.
    They are always strokes though.

33 points. First competition off 10.

Only hit 2 GIR. Length is my main problem as we were playing off the whites on the Monty.

Happy enough though except for one dumb three putt and taking a double on a par 3 from very little trouble. Spent most of my day in the sand too despite not being particularly wayward.

Feel like it might be coming together after a few lessons and alot of work over the winter.

Shot mid twenties all last year off 18 after five years golfing. Was sick of it and considered giving up. My mate who started with me was spanking me week in week out. He was pushing on while I was going backwards.

Manned up and went on a winter golf blitz.
    - Lessons - Grip change. Felt mad at the start but stuck with it.
    - Driving range at least twice a week.
    - Pitching behind hurling\soccer pitches.
    - Chipping onto the couch at home during breaks in Sky golf coverage. Thin camping foam mat under mat in sitting room.
    - Swinging in front of mirror in bedroom at home.
    - Putting on mat at home into hole cut in side of upsidedown shoebox.
    - New (still cheap) driver, 3 wood, 3 + 4 hybrids.
    - New 60 degree. Never had one before. Loving it. Playing bunker shots with it so well.
    - Reading websites and watching lossons on You tube. Thanks Herman Williams golf on youtube.

Felt like I might be going mad at stages.

Last four rounds off 18 - 35 Tuam, 37 Galway Bay, 35 Tuam, 38 Tuam. One scratch in four rounds.

    Happy as Larry Mize

Don't know Tuam but 38 around Galway Bay is super shooting. May as well be a links course.

    78 yesterday at St Margaret's.

    3 birdies
    8 pars
    6 bogies
    1 double bogey

32 putts was a few too many really. 1 x 3putt and a few too many 8 footers missed high side.

    Great stuff Wombatman.
Very similar scenario to you. I managed to break through to consistent shooting in the mid 30's late on last year.
A great feeling after having a few years of frustration.

One bit of advice is to keep up the hard work, I slacked off (Kid arrived) Dec-Feb and had a few disasters.

Back up and running now, 36 points, 93 strokes at the weekend in Grange Castle (off self given 18)
That's my 2nd of 3 cards required for first GUI.
At one under after 3 holes, with 2 missed birdie putts, I was hoping for a late call up to Augusta. Normal service quickly resumed.

As an aside, really loving being part of a club after years of casual golf.
It's a nice feeling knowing you'll be back (hopefully) in a few days to put right a few wrongs.
I feel it's going to help course management too, I made a big effort on that last year, but when every other round was at a different or new course it was hard to do.

Can't wait to get the 3rd card in and get cracking on.

You're probably looking at the same again I'd guess at a maximum (presuming the course is par 72).

86 off 15 (society hcap) for 37 points in Castlemartyr at the weekend.
Very happy apart from the 4 3 putts (I'm blaming the recently sanded greens!!!)

Assuming it's a Par 72, I would guess that you're in for a reduction on your previous handicap. I would take a guess and say 14/15 (But....there are a lot of variables to be taken into account so it's a guessing game)

There's a lot of information here on it, page 27 onward
    http://www.gui.ie/handicap-manual/congu_2012_correct-pdf.aspx

I hope I'm not way off the mark in summarizing it like this (I know I'm leaving out some detail)

They'll take your 3 cards, if there are any holes with a Triple Bogey or more, then they'll reduce the score on these holes to a Double Bogey.
Your best card after this (i.e your 91 card could be better than your 89 if you had a disaster hole or two on it as opposed to a "steadier 89") will be used to get an initial handicap.

And here is where the fun starts, making it hard to predict. The handicap committee can, and should, bring in all kinds of variables
Previous playing history, handicap, time of the year, weather conditions, information from peers.
They'll err on the side of caution.

From what I've experienced, a lot of people are really surprised/shocked when they get a lower handicap then previously held. "I was 17 HC 5 years ago, how can they give me a lower one than that?"

In your case, I think they will give you a lower one.
They can't be sure how much/little golf you have played over the last 5-6 years that you've been without a GUI but based on you're 2 cards I don't think they are going to weigh your previous HC heavily into the equation at all (i.e you're very close to your old HC at present...it may lead them to think that you've played a fair bit in those years, and it won't stop them going lower)

Again, from what I've seen, a previous handicap is generally taken into account when there's the opposite of your situation. e.g A friend of a friend was out of golf for 4 years, had a HC of 12 back then, handed in 3 cards in the mid 90's and they still gave him a HC of 13... Guess they were being cautious, protecting current members, and came to the conclusion that he should get back to 12/13 in a few months....as he previously had shown that ability despite what the cards said.

After all that is considered they'll pluck a number out of the air :D

And that wasn't much of a summary by me either :)

You're more than likely correct. I got 10 despite my lowest card of the three being 85 and playing off 12 at my lowest a few years back.

Can understand why they do it albeit it can seem a little unfair.

    31 putts, 1 x 3 putt
3 birdies, two of them chip ins

At least you are missing them on the high side. nothing worse than missing a makable putt on the low side, or leaving them short!

I recently got my first handicap since I was a juvenile. I handed in 3 cards. 86,85 and 89 and I got handicap of 15. I'd say you will get 15/16
    Cheers
