In the day light hours you probably will see them but not an unlit person/car at night. I have often seen cars pull out of side roads on to the hard shoulder without stopping, with intention of merging with traffic. As careful as you maybe be, there's no accounting for actions of others. The hard shoulder isn't a safe place to be driving.
If it ain't safe don't drive in it, if it's safe to do so, do so!

It's up to the driver to make those decisions based on the prevailing road conditions at the time they are on that particular section of road.

At the end of the day a lot of it is common sense!

Moving into the hard shoulder to allow overtaking is just like any other action on the role, you have the responsibility to do it safely and it's your fault if you cause a crash by pulling in in the wrong place. But most of the hard shoulder is perfect for pulling in to allow faster vehicles to pass, so use it!

    So use it!??

    Aggressive much?

Btw l'm by no means a "slow" driver, and find slow drivers very annoying too. But would rather crawl along in the line behind a learner/elderly person than have them mow down an innocent person in the hard shoulder because agressive drivers behind were intimidating them on to the hard shoulder.

They kinda look like cars backed up behind the slow driver ;)

Not as all! What I mean is, use it as in if it's safe to do so and you need to use it to clear a backlog of frustrated followers.
It's also called having respect for your fellow road users, we all use the roads, or should I say we all share the roads, but we often have different reasons for being on the road, some people just need (are able to) to get somewhere faster than others.

If this is you behind a keyboard, I'd hate to meet you behind the wheel.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The "So use it!" bit with the exclamation mark.

I don't think that was their intent.

Hot headed drivers get on my t1ts as much as slow drivers and you can spot em a mile off. Like you, I wouldn't put myself out to let them past but at the time same time, I don't want their erratic driving style near me so I will let them move on when I can.

    No, they're fine
On a couple of occasions tonight I overtook a slow car perfectly, only to have them get annoyed with me and proceed to flash their lights and then leave their full lights on. Bastards...

As I edited to include above, I myself am not a "slow" driver, conditions allowing, I drive to the speed limit. I just happen to think aggressive drivers are just as dangerous when theyre intimidating other drivers.

    That's how it read.

I move aside if its necessary to do so for them to overtake, but only when its safe to do so.

Shouldn't be on the roads if they are unable to drive at the set speeds.

They are speed LIMITS, not TARGETS.

Yesterday, driving from Dublin - Galway, I witnessed 3, yes 3, idiotic drivers. That's not including the 1 slow driver holding up 8 cars either. The other 3 were idiots who proceeded to overtake 4/5 vehicles travelling at 80kmh; 2 of whom did so approaching a bend, 1 van driver overtook 3 cars behind me and had to pull in behind me swiftly as there was an oncoming car. For 1 other car he drove 'dually' beside the car 2 behind me.

Merc, BMW and Audi drivers are assholes.
    As are van drivers.

Generally. Obviously I can't 'generalise', but any of the impatient dangerous drivers are usually drivers of those vehicles.

    Really. I was gobsmacked.

I agree, they're the worst type of drivers as they can cause another driver to make decisions that are irrational and possibly put someone in a hazardous situation!

Fair enough, they can read as you're giving orders though, to those who aren't familiar with your habits.

This! 100% legal and safe manoeuvre and they take it as a personal insult! How dare you overtake ME! Get the boat!

Sarcasm? I didn't read all of the other pages. Merely gave my opinion. Which is truth - they're the maximum speed that's deemed to be safe to drive at. Not targets that you should be aiming for.

It's like calories. Just because you're allowed to eat 2,000 each day, doesn't mean you HAVE to eat that many.

Coming home tonight on the M7 seen a truck overtake something, and I nearly ended up in the arse of it, Some bright spark had no rear lights, and I kid you not, doing around 60/70kph, just about managed to see it, being black and not much light.

It's people like that who do my nut in, and you can go on about it's a limit not a target bull but that is both dangerous and incredibly stupid to be doing on a motorway

Its a target in your test. if you can't hit the correct speed for the conditions its a fail.

I've had it happen a couple of years ago when I caught up with someone on the motorway, I was doing 120km/h (ish but less than 125) as I was passing him, the prat speeded up!

I just went for it and passed him at 150km

    Why do people do that!

I then slowed back to 120km/h ish ans never saw him in my mirrors again!

I put it down to inferiority complex, god forbid a "lesser" car overtakes a "nice" car, they sink the boot. Couldn't be having that!
