    mikkeller - hopbomb challenge.

    boom.

What do people think of Mikkeller beers? I've been mostly disappointed by them, had the Amarillo Single Hop IPA which was mustard in colour and had a lot of sediment in the bottom. Whatever hop character it had was ruined by the yeast flavours. Thinking back I can't come up with one I've properly liked.

Last night had the Granville Island Irish Red, 5.6%, loads of caramel malt and a big hop bitterness to finish. It's got 40 IBUs, not to style but a very nice.

Having Nogne IPA and DIPA. The bottles say best before 2014 so though they would be fresh enough, unfortunately just saw that they were brewed in 2011, and can tell the flavour is not really there any more.

I know you asked Creamy Goodness this, but thought I'd chime in with an opinion on Mikkeller too. I've tried every one of their beers that has arrived in Dublin the past 2-4 years, and seems to me that 50% of them are amazing, and 50% are good/average/poor/not worth the money. But I think any brewery that can convert somebody that doesn't like certain styles of beer(tripel's, quads, belgians, porters) into loving them, and not just being a hop head, they are doing something right. Sure their coffee IPA was not great, and having to throw a 14 euro 330ml cognac aged belgian ale down the sink after a few sips can test your patience, but beers like Gypsy Tears, Farmhouse Invasion IPA, Chilli Porter, etc would be the beers I'd open* to show somebody how amazing craft beer can be

*to be honest I wouldn't share these beers with a sceptic, they are too nice !

I've only had 2 Mikkeller beers. One with a woman on a bike on the front, the name I can't remember. That was ok, but nothing special, but their Cream Ale is lovely.

I had only one Mikkellar so far, Geek Breakfast and it was pretty damn good I thought. I must try another bottle but at 15 notes a pop, it'll be a while. As it was too I couldn't quite manage the whole bottle in one go as it was quite strong. Very nice beer though.

put it this way, i'd rather take a punt on a 15 euro bottle of mikkeller than buy the equivalent amount of budweiser for the same price.

That's the beauty of craft beer, the excitement, the unknown that's on top of the flavour and the craft :).

True, but I've never seen a bottle of Bud going for 15 quid. ;)

Grabbed one of these for Good Friday.

poorly worded i meant i'd rather spend 15 euro on 1 bottle of mikkeller than spend 15 euro on say 10 bottles of budweiser (if you'd even get 10).

Sipping away at a Fuller's London Pride on cask, a rarity in Calgary, it's delicious, much better than the bottle

+1 on the Hop Bomb, drank it 2 days ago. I think it's now actually the american IPA benchmark for me now, not that strange or extraordinary but just SO well done, hit all the notes that I want from an IPA, aroma/colour/body/taste/aftertaste were all amazing and got very high marks.

I love them, the only of his beers that I've not found exceptional was the Foodball Solstice Saison, which was uninteresting. His Beer Hop Breakfast is my go-to brew.

Other Mikkeller beers that I'd rate as exceptional
    - the Black Hole series of Imperial Stouts
    - Simcoe Single-Hop IPA
    - I Hardcore You (the Brewdog collaboration IPA)
    - Hoppy Lovin' Christmas IPA
    - his Sort Gul black IPA

I was at Arendsnest bar in Amsterdam recently and took a liking to Snab pale ale. Don't suppose there's anywhere in Ireland that sells it?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,128 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

I've never seen any Snab beers outside the Netherlands. But the likes of Metalman Pale Ale wouldn't be far off the mark at all, IMO.

Of course, I've found that alot of the Mikkellers I've tried have been off in one way or another, too much yeast sediment, carbonation too low/too high etc. Now that I think of it their was one I liked, the LA Lager, Burger and Bun was very good.

I'm wary of the Single hop series because I got a 2 bad Amarillos, I'd love to try the Simcoe though. Maybe I've just been unlucky.

Just sipping a Voyager IPA in the black sheep.
It must be the bitterest Irish beer yet. Wonder what IBU's it clocks in at.

Rogue Mocha Porter is nice, but missing a kick or a bite. Sierra Neveda Porter is real nice. Very full warm aftertaste.

I found that disappointing. I did lack bite.

I think it's one of the most unbalanced beers I've ever drank.

Absolutely no body to it and completely lacks any sort of malt profile to support or reign in the hops. It's a bit of a let down if you ask me. Also feels like it's made the mistake of having far too much early addition hops and too little late and aroma so it's a massive bitter bang at the start and not much else.

I actually think it's the worst beer they've made since Chris started.

Chris posted a picture on FB there other day while making the second batch, hopefully he tinkered with a bit.

Yep, definitely agree. It completely lacked balance, and it had very little hop aroma also for an IPA. After a few gulps, all I could taste was the lingering bitterness. I wouldn't be rushing back for it.

I felt the same. I enjoyed my first few gulps but then felt it was just too bitter (which is something I'd rarely say). I'll give it another go to be sure though.

I was the opposite. Way too bitter at first, but much more interesting on the second glass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,516 ✭✭✭matrim

I agree that it was unbalanced and needed more of a malt hit to smooth / balance out the beer but it was still interesting and with a little bit of tweaking could be a very nice beer.

I'd have it again but don't think I'd have more than 2 at a time

Not a huge IPA fan but I'm getting the taste more and more. I had a Voyager last night and can echo what was said here. It was very bitter after a while. I was delighted to get fiished with it tbh. Not really sure I'd have gone for another pint had I the opportunity. I was eyeing up the Sierra Nevada Celebration tap at the Salt House but before I could order my mates showed up and we headed somewhere else.

If you want to try a really good IPA try the Nelson Sauvan Single Hop Imperian IPA from Flying Dog that's currently on tap in the Salt House, €5 for 2/3rds of a pint, but it's 10% abv, so don't abuse it!

Widmer Brothers Brrr Seasonal Ale is tasty. Very smooth. Wasn't blown away by Anchor's Christmas Ale, but the clove taste was interesting.

I had one of their Porters right after reminding me of how much I like it.

Crew-alewerkstatt Pale ale - a nice subtle pale ale. Not too carbonated and a nice light hop kick. Would not think it was a German beer.

Crew-alewerkstatt Indian pale ale - pours a lovely orange colour. Again not too carbonated and this tastes more hoppy than the pale ale.i am getting a sweetness like caramel also in the taste.

    Enjoyed both beers.
