Was there a guy with long black hair in a plait in your group?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Lock Knife

No, doesn't ring a bell. There was about 5 different groups of 4 or 5

Got a place in Dublin. Have to attend an induction day on Friday then start proper on 9th. Have to bring a copy of my CV (again! this will be third one I've given them) with me. That's as much as I've got so far.

I'm guessing they didn't have enough candidates to fill all the spaces initially. Kind of surprised at this. It looks and sounds a pretty decent course for Fas.

Monaghan course is same. Induction Friday and start the 9th. Anyone I have spoken to about this course is amazed at how good it seems and there were plenty of people at the information day and aptitude test but they still took a group of late comers in so they must not have gotten the quality they were looking for or people didn't meet the criteria in other ways.

    Anyway.....I don't care! Roll on Friday! :D

Well I'm going to concede hope at this stage and wish all of you who got on the course the best of luck. Never heard anything back from them, a follow up email would've been good either way.

Have you called/e-mailed them for a response? They're **** poor at keeping people in the loop. Husband called AGAIN this morning. They reckon the e-mail was sent, but bounced due to an incorrect address. This was AFTER my husband gave them his e-mail addy three times...

Didn't occur to them to call to verify or to return any messages left.

    I'd call them again.

Yeah by the sounds of that I'll give them a call tomorrow morning, nothing to lose. Wouldn't be the first time the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing when fas are somehow involved :)

If any doing the induction day tomorrow wants to let us know what we can expect on Friday that would be great :P

Also hope they use their website and Facebook page during the course. They have been very quiet on these for past few weeks and it is a course about the integration and importance of the internet. Good way of keeping in contact with everyone involved on the course.

It is an indication of things to come.
The organisation is very very disorganised and has amazing people.
The owner/ MD (think there are a few of them who are owners) is an artist with a formidable reputation for drinking.
He is a smart guy but his great ability if you want to call it that is that he hires very very well.

The lecturers are a mixed bunch but some of them are amazing. People who really are artists, entrepreneurs, brilliant programmers etc.
One of the film lecturers has an emmy award , the main art tutor is a working artist, one of the 'digital theory' whatever that is lecturers is now involved in an amazing sounding startup.

In some ways the networking is the main part. You should seek to get a real rapport with the lecturers by engaging in the course.
If you think it is bull**** don't say so, just do your work. If you are overflowing with ideas don't disrupt the class.

I worked for the programme and different locations had different strengths. The Galway group for example almost rebelled and used the class as the basis for a network. One guy there set up an ISP.

In Cork there was a high job rate but people who'd been marketing in property went into places that weren't property and bull****ted convincingly about digital marketing.

It is a very different experience.
Also remember you are paid to be there it is work not a course.
For example no half terms, no summer holidays.

Good luck and I'd say have fun (you certainly will) but that's not the point.

    "Dear Candidate,

Please note that the Induction Day was changed from Tuesday the 26th to Wednesday the 27th March 2013."

hopefully its so they can fill all the places

It's a shame, but it's made very clear from the start, you have to be unemployed for AT LEAST 12 months. This was mentioned several times (At least in Cork).

There was a slight panic with my husband, but he was OK as FAS confirmed he had enough credits to do the course. I had to call to clarify as they couldn't find anything under his name. He's signing for credits only as the claim is in my name.

He's at his induction this morning, so will post back later and let you know how it went.

Yeah it was mentioned but they said they accept people that is only signing on 10 months upwards it was a gamble but when called to do the 2nd test in dublin last week i rang to see if i was wasting my time going up due to the 12 month factor and told come up we will try and get you across the line, now they say they cant do anything, i was talking to at least 6 people last friday in dublin who were only signing on about 6 months, anyway not going to happen but bit of a bollox you want to do something and have to wait 12 months, its a long time sitting on the dole sending of cv's everyday, Joke

Its not unemployed 12 months is it, its on the live register 12months is it not?
I'm doing a jobbridge so they've nicely screwed me over by taking me of the live register for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 kennedy2011

Yes on the Live register for 12 months, i was in yesterday with them and am 10.5 months and thats no good after been offered a place, i was told its 12 months or nothing thats all they said to me,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Lock Knife

So I just rang them there and was told that I'm on a list and that they would be getting in touch with everyone today and to keep an eye on my email. I'm probably working my way up a reserve queue. Nerve wracking stuff

AFIK being on job-bridge counts as you are receivng a social welfare payment as such while on it, you are only "technically" off the live register, i transferred from jobbridge to do the cork course.

Had the induction day today, handy enough really not back until 9th for 3 days training then the course content starts on 15th, would rather get stuck in from day one but what can ya do.

It's hard to know. I don't want to be stuck on some useless course for the next 6 months, but it looks like doing a course is my only option.
I'm curious to know why this course is so great.

dont think this course is gonna be useless thb, as for why is the course so great?

    they train you,
they supply you with a free high spec HP laptop.
they supply you with a free smart phone including bills for the duration of the course.
they provide you with free 3g internet for the duration of the course.
the provide you with all the software needed for all the modules of the course.(go price adobe creative suite for the craic)
they provide you with a network of people with varied skill levels and experience for you to draw from.
they provide you with real customers to build websites for as part of the course work, not theoretical project "customers"
on completion they will refer customers to you on a fee paying basis.

    sounds ok to me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭Gongoozler

Oh i wasn't refering to this course.just so many courses out there are useless (to me at least).
That stuff all sounds nice but doesnt say anything about what you learn. Im not signing up to get a free laptop and phone like. I'll take a look at the modules when im at a computer later. Sounds like its too late for me now anyway. Besides, even with the 50 extra from jobbridge im struggling, nevermind having to travel to this every day and without that.

You would've seen my husband then. He was also there. Now that they've laid out the course, it does seem to make more sense to have the induction done now, before Easter, then you can crack on after.

He's very enthusiastic about it. He took his CV and the lady there told him it was really good. I might go to her for some tips!! Hopefully, this will be the key to a career change.

The very best of luck to you, Wichie, and all the others who are starting out!

after todays induction i dont think theres anyone there thats just along for the freebies, everyone is enthusiastic and seem really interested in furthering themselves tbh, i kno where your coming from ive had to move counties to do this course, luckily i have family here to that i can stay with, otherwise theres no possible way i could manage to do it, evenso like yourself i can barely afford to loose the extra jobbridge allowance, but fcukit sacrifices have to be made to get on with things.

@bajangurl aah i was just havin a whinge about not getting started, just all revved up and nowhere to go lol tbh the timing is perfect for me - have a wedding next week and another the week after so i was dreading having to tell em id be missing for the 2 days. yea today was interesting, CVs are a nightmare - theyr evolving and changing at the same rate as the technology these days and every person that gives you advice has a different opinion as to how it should be done, i got a good positive vibe from today , nice mix of people and ages, probly bumped into your OH at some stage, like himself im expecting it to be a good experience so fingers crossed! hopefully theyr communication will improve tho, ever been to that webworks building? wonder what its like, we'll find out soon enuf i spose

So what can we expect in the induction tomorrow? Do they go through your CV individually? Anymore info on the specifics of the course. Are they strict with the 9.30 start because my bus won't get me into town until 9.20 with a 20 minute walk after that. Hope the might push it to a 10 start lol

    hey macca,

dont think theyl bust your chops on the first day but they told us they expect us to be in class for 9 - 9.15 once the course content starts.

theres a full briefing on the course content and the cv stuff is more of a talk during which we could ask questions. the woman who delivered the cv talk offered to stay back after the lecture to deal with individual cv if we wanted.

Lol. Still hanging on by the skin of my teeth. Never heard anything back yesterday so I gave them another call today and the girl on the phone took my number and got back to me later on. She told me that they haven't finished going through the applications yet and that I can expect an email letting me know either way within a week. Not sure if I should fire an email off to admin or just play it cool... I didn't put the HTML/CSS stuff which I've learned through code academy the last couple of weeks on my original C.V.

I'm thinking you should just turn up tomorrow to show your interest in doing it. Proper swotting lol but anything if it gets you moving forward :)
