Did Rice not just sign a new deal at the beginning of the season though? Would be a tough cap hit to take to trade him.

was a radical way out there suggestion ;) plus you wouldn't take the cap hit the team you trade to would.

You replace Reed and Lewis via the draft. With the rookie payscale you pay feck all. So cap isnt really impacted.

as for Rice I never said CUT him I said TRADE him. I also said it would be radical.
Whatever way you look at it the Ravens will have roughly 10 million less to play with in their salary cap going forward due to Flaccos new contract! Whether its signing a free agent or extending a contract o a current player they are going to be affected!!

I misread the Rice idea! You'd still be loosing another vital member of the Super Bowl winning team (albeit getting something in return)!

You still have to pay the signing bonus (well it's already paid but it counts against your cap if you trade him)

According to this (http://www.sportscity.com/nfl/salaries/baltimore-ravens-salaries) the combined salary of Flacco, Lewis and Reed for this year was $18.9 million! Pretty much all that will be paid to Flacco next year (presumably), so they will have to replace Reed and Lewis with much less! Though you could maybe argue that it's leadership more than production they would really have to replace!

I was really impressed with Pierce in the playoffs, but I'm not sure on cutting Ray Rice! Would te Ravens want to loose another leader on the team!

Presumably Flacco is looking to get $20 Million a year so if they get that deal done the Ravens will probably have to cut someone like Boldin. I can't see a situation where the Ravens keep Reed or Kruger and keeping Flacco means cutting a Boldin or a Jones.

The team who trades takes the cap hit as they've already paid the bonus.

Not a hope Paul Kruger will be a Raven next year.
Looking for 8 million per year, passrushers are always in demand

I don't think Jacoby Jones will be back. One year into a two years, 7 million deal, he'll get cut.

Anquan Boldin is close to 6 million in cap money. Will be extended probably.

Joe Flacco top 10 now? Absolutely. Top 5? 5th, no higher. The super bowl run was great, but the regular season was lackluster. Still out of the elite (Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees) group by a distance.

Next year will be tough, doing well if we get 10-6. On the whole I think a defensive lineup of Jones, Ngata, random AN other DL, Suggs, McClain, Ellerbe, Upshaw, Smith, Webb, Pollard, random FS is fine, and obviously Flacco, the RBs and TEs are fine, but our OL and WRs are a major concern, and we probably will suffer from the lack of Jacoby Jones' spark (arguably without it we'd be 8-8 regular season and never had the SB run).

What about McKinnie? Can you afford to resign him too. His improvement and Flacco's improvement is not a coincidence.

Ray's locker has been emptied, really hits home now that he's not coming back:

But he leaves a champion again:

And he said he wanted to leave to spend more time with his kids. Great picture of him and his son putting up the U as Lewis III signs for Miami earlier today:

Nice to see him signing for his dad's old Alma Mater and am I right in thinking that Lewis III plays at RB?

Yeah he's a RB. Must be a bit of a novelty for a college RB having Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce at the end of a phone if you have any questions.

A Buccaneers fan, but I laughed so much at this clip.

What a character, Jones is. Funny, humble(for a WR) and seems like a nice guy.

Must be on top of the world, coming from last year's low to winning the Super Bowl.

All the other team threads are discussing draft needs

Are we so good that we don't need new players?

What are you hoping for? What are the positions of need?

Linebacker and safety for me, Mike.

Interesting thing about the linebackers is that apart from the Bears and Bengals at 20 and 21 respectively I don't see any of the other teams picking after them taking a linebacker in the first round apart from us depending on who's available. Te'o and Ogletree will both go lower than they should due to the off the field stuff and a poor final game too in Te'o's case, so if either of them are available we'll take them. Mayock has said as much in his conference call earlier today too. I think Ogletree has very little chance of dropping but I wouldn't write off our chances of getting Te'o.

As for safety, I really like Jonathan Cyprien.

If those kind of players are gone I wouldn't be surprised to see us go for Montgomery of LSU with Kruger more than likely going to free agency.

I know it's early days yet, but any crack/speculation on Flacco's contract talks? Is there a possibility that he might be tagged? Personally, I think tagging him would be an awful insult to the man after what he did this post season.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

Almost certain Flacco will get tagged.
Ozzie never rushes contract talks. Rice got tagged, so did Ngata while Suggs got tagged twice.

Contract won't be sorted for a few months yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,370 ✭✭✭✭Son Of A Vidic

How do you think Joe will react to being tagged? Watching the on field panel, CBS interview thing that he did post-SB win, he seemed pretty hopeful that he would get the contract sorted out soon. Then I suppsoe getting $20 million with the exclusive tag might keep him happy. Tagging him gives flexibility to sort our your guys Reed, Boldin and maybe Kruger for next season. Lewis is irreplaceable, but losing Reed and Boldin makes a repeat run next season more difficult to achieve.

Who do you guys want to see do the Ravens America's game? I'm not sure who's the best at talking, but I think Harbaugh and Flacco are certs. Lewis has already done it so maybe not, I'd like to see Reed do it. Kruger is another guy who should be considered.

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't Harbs, Flacco and Lewis. They usually only wouldn't have Lewis on again if we had won two Super Bowls in recent years, in that case they tend to go for someone different outside of the QB and coach.

If Lewis doesn't do it it will be Ed or Boldin IMO.

M&T Bank is getting $35m worth of upgrades during the offseason

In turn with the above, Ravens have raised their ticket prices by 10%

Ravens and Flacco's agent meet in Indy at the combine this weekend to start talks over Joe's contract

Webb and McClain are recovering well from their injuries and will be ready to go for week 1 2013

Ozzie has said the middle of our defense is our biggest need in the draft

John Eisenberg of Ravens.com says he thinks Ed Reed plays for Baltimore in 2013 if it's a straight yes or no question

Also, here's a very quick read about what the Ravens scouts will be up to during the weekend at the combine - http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Scouting-Combine-Preview/51178c81-937b-412c-a9e4-1041794bb828

Matt Birk has retired. Started every game since he joined in 2009 and was named Walter Peyton Man of the Year in 2011. Great way for him to go out with his last game being the Super Bowl win.

    matt_birk_92637491_540x405.jpg

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/22/matt-birk-makes-retirement-official/
As a Harvard alum in the NFL, Matt Birk was used to doing things a little bit differently than most professional football players.

So it was that his retirement press conference took place at Baltimore’ Battle Grove Elementary School with 40 fifth-graders asking questions and the press standing in the back of the room. Birk, the 2011 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, is establishing a community reading center for students and their families at the school.

“The reason that I wanted to do it here today was because I have enjoyed playing football, but as much as playing, I have enjoyed doing this [giving back to the community] as an NFL player,” Birk said, via a release from the Ravens. “When I was a rookie … There are 53 guys on a team. I was like the 53rd guy. I was the worst player on the team, but I was on the team. That’s all that mattered. I went out and did a visit my first week with the Vikings. I went to a school, and all the kids were going crazy. They didn’t really know who I was. They just knew that I played for the Vikings, and I thought, ‘Wow. This is unbelievable.’ Like I said, this has been a big part of my career, and what I’ve enjoyed doing is coming to schools over the years and really being with young people like you guys. I get a lot of energy — get a lot of positive energy — from you guys and really enjoy it. I just thought that this would be a fitting place to do it.”

Birk’s retirement after 15 seasons will save the Ravens about $2 million off the salary cap, money that can go toward keeping some of the other key players from last year’s Super Bowl champions in town a little while longer.

Interesting read from Jason La Confora on what a possible Flacco deal may look like, after speaking to some cap and contract guys in the NFL. There's some tables and graphs in it so I won't copy and paste but the link is below:

Flacco signs on Monday lads, deal is agreed. Great to get it sorted so early and avoid any holdouts etc.

He's going to get a huge deal but he gambled last year and won, so it's time for the Biscotti to pay up. People will say we've overpaid, but what was the alternative? There was none really. Super Bowl MVP with one of the best post-seasons in NFL history. We were hardly going to let him walk and Joe held basically all of the cards.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the media over drive about this contract when he has a few poor games during the regular season.

As ESPN business analyst Andrew Brandt has just said on Twitter:
    Andrew Brandt ‏@adbrandt
When terms of Flacco's deal are announced, ignore total value, big number with little meaning. Keys are guarantees, early cash flow.

    The contract is quite ridiculous:

Joe Flacco and Ravens agreed to a six-year contract in excess of $120 million that makes him the highest paid player in NFL history.

Flacco held the Ravens to ransom, Ravens had no options available to them.

It is starting to become a joke, at this rate there will have to be a cap for each position :D

Imagine what Rodgers is going to get

He's one of only very few QBs that could justify the contract Flacco is getting. The Ravens would want to hope it's a contract that is cuttable.
