How about a jet boat, there is even an engine going on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rolls-Royce-Gnome-Gas-Turbine-Jet-Engine-/110990636658?pt=UK_CPV_Aviation_SM&hash=item19d78eb672

The prop shaft going between your legs? :D You'd want to make sure that ones tight!

Lovely boat though! I'd imagine that would sit scarily low.

Just got up to speed with this thread fergal. Great work and dedication! Are you working outdoors, under a carport or something? Just thought, if so, is there an issue with the weather, moisture, midges or whatever?

I have the luxury of a very large shed, big enough to fit the Microplus (16' + )and a car, together and another shed to lay out sheeting for marking and cutting etc.

Keep up the good work! You put my little resto in the shade!

Yep I'm outside :( and moisture is my worst enemy, I have to remove the fiberglass from the sides and do them again  as a bit of moisture got in while it was curing and left some cloudy patches.

little restorations is where I started :D

Hi davlacey, not much going on I just roughly cut out the sub deck and temporally fixed it in place next I will cut in about 10mm around all the edges so I can put a strip of mahogany in that way when I put on the top layer of mahogany I can round the edges a bit without the plywood showing.

4K for just the engine block  you could build the one in the video below for that so if you want one just go for it :D

Just the Block http://www.marineparts.ie/engine-parts/mercruiser/engine-parts-1-2/long-blocks/reman-longblock-gm-5-0l-v8-96-99.html and two manifolds http://www.marineparts.ie/engine-parts/mercruiser/exhaust-system/exhaust-manifolds/exhaust-manifold-aluminium-gm-5-0-5-7l-83-on.html

You then have to buy a carb, starter motor, distributor, fuel pump, exhaust elbows, manifold, and so on then you buy the bling :D

Do you have to stick this engine in. Can you not just build the boat and put a 25hp engine on it. I really love the look of the boat but not a great fan of teh speed of it because knowing my luck, id come of it upside down and brak my kneck.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

Now now that looks nice. Do you think id make the boat alone with more seats in it for 3-4k. You see my father has a 25hp engine lying there these last few years not getting used. If i could build the boat for 3-k then i might start it early summer. How many hours does it take to make such a boat.

The cost can be as much or little as you want depending on the finish if you make it with just plywood and not use mahogany it will be a lot cheeper. Have a look here https://www.boatdesigns.com/Outboards/departments/10/ and pick something you like then look at the "customer photos" to get some ideas, my other boat is a 16' Malahini but something like the ZIP, SQUIRT, or FLYING SAUCER might suit you better.

Id like one with decent timber on it, mahogany etc.. with nice leather seats. At a guess what would you say for one like i mention at say 16ft with 5 seats in it like a car with my own engine on it.

Brilliant, looks a real lovely boat. I would build one of these but would also like to spend that wee bit extra to get the maghogney look.

P.s, i take it your not going to tel me how much it would be to build one without an engine ;)

That one was built out of a lot of scrap wood most of the hardwood frames were built from a pile of firewood from a local machine shop :D so it's hard to put a price on it the biggest cost was plywood and epoxy and sone oak skirting boards that were on sale in B&Q :D

O your good i tell ya, getting a price out of you is like getting blood out of a stone, lol. Its ok, i can take a hint now but can you tell me woul di have change if i bought all new wood, ply etc.. out of 4k if i built something similar to yours ;)

It's not that I'm good it's what you are prepared to do to save a few quid, I dive in skips, I go to boat jumble sales, I spent a year waiting to win a set of windshield brackets for the right price on ebay, if I can't find a part I make it,I live on carers allowance "just about" so if I can't afford something I'll do a small project to get me what I need, it's called my boat fund :D so at the end of it all my boats cost me nothing but time and effort. If you set out to build a boat for 4k it will cost you 4k and more but if you set out to build a boat for nothing from nothing then that is what it will cost :D

    Yeah understandable.

How much sheets ply and lengths of timber and epoxy/fiberglass did you use for the boat in the pic above. then i should have a rough idea on what needs to be spent.

Good for you :D if you need any help just ask, the Glen-L forum is very helpful and worth joining I'll see you there ;)
Also while your ordering the plans it's well worth getting their book "Boatbuilding with plywood"

The plans are very easy as they are full size so no lofting, with large frames you get half and just double up.

    DSC00432.jpg

I trace these out and then just transfer them on to the timber.

    DSC00435.jpg

You also get some helpful booklets on how things go together.

Wiring is done, this is just a temporary panel for running in the engine and doing the test run, later when I have the cockpit done these will be hidden.
It's bloody cold and damp out there so I will be under pressure to get the hull fibreglassed and varnished before May when I planed to do the test run.:(

the button start looks good are u going to hide it? are u fiberglssing the inside off the hull or outside?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

Yea they will all be hidden I might add a few retro switches. I'm going to redo the outside as a few damp patches got in while it was curing, I'm not looking forward to removing the fiberglass but it has to be done next time I'm going to use peel-ply over the wet resin and that might help.

id dread having to re fiberglass the hull after painting it.id be half afraid to remove the fiberglass incase it seperated the plywood that would be my luck. i pierced a screwdriver through the hull last week prying old fiberglass off the inside of the boat

I find the best way to remove fiberglass from wood is with a paint scraper and a heat gun you have to cover up well with a full face shield as you get alot of splinters of glass flying about.

I started to fit the exhaust "I still hate drilling holes in the boat":D

    20130426_194143_zps6c08dbe2.jpg

Bit of a problem the exhaust tips had a 1/4" gap all around and even with the bolt clamps there was no way I could get the reinforced pipe to tighten.

    20130426_194435_zps0f46f993.jpg

My solution was to cut the top and bottom of a tin and silicone it to the exhaust trying to keep the gap equal.

    20130429_1244330_zpsc07fc765.jpg

    20130429_125244_zps023d6d61.jpg

Then fill the gap with epoxy and when it's set remove the tin, job done :)

Will that epoxy around the exhaust pipe not soften and get loose with the heat?

The exhaust gas is mixed with water down through the system so when it comes out the tips it is luke warm you can hold your hand on it so it shouldn't be a problem. " I hope" :D

just curious: how does it get mixed with water on the way down? Is it linked with the cooling system or something?

Very good job by the way, great to see it coming along so well.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,337 Mod ✭✭✭✭fergal.b

The exhaust gas is cooled by water sucked in from the bottom of the boat and pumped around the manifolds they are separate till they reach the elbow at the top of the manifold once they leave that they are mixed down the exhaust pipe to keep that cool, at all times you should be able to hold your hand on the pipe if it's too hot you have a problem.

First test run of the engine in the boat to make sure there are no leaks before I do the planking. She still needs to be tuned in and the timing set but I'm happy enough to carry on with closing her up, the alternator belt could also do with a bit of a tighten :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,108 ✭✭✭pedroeibar1

Sounds sweet! Almost no lag. Is that squeek solely down to the alternator belt? Brings me back to the days when I shaved heads and had to worry about jetting carburettors!:D
