I'm still finding it really odd that GTAV is coming out around the release of the PS4 but it wont be compatible with it.

I'd guess this. It means the most profit.

In fairness, a lot of games are. Companies can't just stop making games for one console when the new one comes out, because no matter how well the PS4 does at launch, there'll still be many more PS3s worldwide, which means it's the bigger market share than the PS4.

Releasing GTAV at the end of the consoles life makes the most sense because there'll never be as great a market share again for that console. It's at it's peak.

GTAV is still coming out 2-3 months before the PS4, so even if it was going to be released on PS4 as well even as a launch title, the vast majority of people would buy it on PS3 on release so they wouldn't have to wait those 2-3 months.

Like others said, I wouldn't be shocked if some sort of GTAV plus DLC collection ends up being released on PS4 in late 2014-2015. But it absolutely makes sense to release GTAV now before the new consoles come out, because they still get the maximum amount of people who can play it playing it, without having to spend extra time before launch trying to make it compatible or porting it to the PS4 as well

A couple of the games at the PS4 launch were getting both PS3 and PS4 versions, I suspect this will be the case here. There'll probably also be some PS4 exclusive content.

I'll probably pick up a PS4 at, or shortly after, release as well as GTA. I don't want to have a PS4 but have to fire up the PS3 to play GTA.

On the other hand, if it releases as a launch title on PS4, I don't want to pay full price for the game again two months down the line and lose my save file.

I'd almost be inclined to wait it out and just buy GTA on the new console. I don't agree with what Penn said above about September being the best time to release the game. People are going to be far less inclined to buy new PS3 games with the PS4 two months away. Yes, more people have the console now than ever, but because of a new console so near release, Rockstar will be very lucky to get 65-70% of the sales they would otherwise have got on PS3. IMO, the ideal time to release it would have been Oct/ Nov 2012.

No one is going to wait two months after release to buy it for PS4. The only market this will possibly effect is the Xmas market but it'll still sell out on release weekend.

The way things are now I think we can expect all the new consoles to come into a slow market. I'm sure everyone will eventually switch but won't be in any rush to do so. Kind of like when a new version of windows comes out.

I think the early adopters will snap up GTAV for the PS4 straight away though, it will be a show case game, I reckon it could be used as advertising by Sony to show the new abilities of the console to people so they can readily compare a title they more than likely own.

PS4 isn't backward compatible as far I as I know.

It is, but it requires save data to be in the PS+ cloud, afaik.

If a ps4/Xbox infinity version (which would be a ps3/360 port) of V was available when the new consoles are available, would it sway you to buy a new console, or would you wait and get it somewhere down the line?

Exact same game, I'd wait a while but get it eventually.

Extra content, I'd wait until I saved up the money and get it as soon as I could.

As much as I love GTA, I wouldn't buy a new console just to play it*. I'd wait until there was a few other games on the system that I wanted to play and then maybe pick up a copy of V as well. Especially if V is being released in September and the PS4 isn't being released until Nov-Dec? No way I'd wait.

*The one caveat on this is if it turns out that V has been primarily developed for PS4/Nextbox, then I'd be tempted to wait, but probably would still get a 360 copy at release.

Some of the games at the launch would sway me more.

Does anybody else see the PS4 announcement diverting sales for this?

any chance it will come out on the ps4 ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

Maybe that's why it was delayed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

Imagine it would be nearly out had it not got delayed :O :(

Hype has gone downhill completely btw. Not that it matters because once a new trailer comes out it will come back but I don't see trailers with massive spaces between them as having much point. Its only annoying.

Re-release maybe but thats it. PS4 almost definitely wont be out globally this year. Would also make zero sense to vastly reduce the potential audiance by going next gen instead of current gen.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

IIRC from the launch of this gen, GTA IV was going to be a PS3 exclusive (or maybe timed exclusive) and Microsoft gave Rockstar a big bag of cash to get it on the Xbox 360 (and I think they got exclusive DLC too?).

That was a huge coup for Microsoft at the time and generated them a ton of publicity and interest.

Given that the PS4 is coming out at around the same time as GTA 5, I'd be surprised if Sony haven't thrown several bag loads of cash to get it on the PS4. I'm sure it'll still come out on the 360 and PS3, but I think it's almost certain that there'll be an enhanced version on the PS4 and it will be out at console launch or very soon after.

    SEPTEMBER...!!!!

I keep saying it but I just can't seem to get it into my head.

Im 28 in June, and waiting until September for GTA 5 is like waiting to go on holidays when I was 8.

Is it normal to be sitting in work and suddenly think 'September' :(

I really hope its worth it :D

I doubt we will see PS4/new Xbox until at least mid 2014.

Sony have announced the PS4 is coming for the holiday season 2013 AFAIR.

In at least one market. I would put my house on it that it wont be released in Europe until 2014.

    Japan>USA>Europe

I tried searching for any water this rumor could hold and have came up short.
In fact, I've found this piece of info:
Fans have been speculating that the recent Grand Theft Auto V delay was connected to the launch of next-generation consoles, however Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said that a “dual-generation launch” for GTA V is unlikely.

“There is not one gamer who is going to sit out of GTA V hoping that something that is going to come along down the road that’s better. It’s going to blow everyone away, and it’s going to be in the market in September,” he said in last night’s third quarter earnings call.

Rockstar recently stated that the only reason for Grand Theft Auto V‘s delay was to ensure that the game meets consumer expectations.

When asked about next-gen titles Zelnick replied, “We really can’t talk about next gen, because we’re not the ones who can talk about it first.” However, he did tease an “extensive pipeline of unannounced titles.”

That was posted on February 6th.

    Heres another more recent snippet:
“To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they’re all nonsense – literally the only reason we’ve delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be,” the developer said. “For those of you asking about the official box art, that will be coming out a bit later as well.”

There is no reason to doubt Rockstar's explanation for the delay.
They don't want a Sim City fiasco....
