Well, I woke up to a lovely card and a pair of Kermit the Frog underpants!
    Score!

Then, my son watched Bill and Teds Bogus Journey (with no Journey in it, reckon they missed a trick there!) whilst I finished Zelda OoT at long long last, only owned it, consistently, since 98!
So, that's 15 years and 5 versions 'til I finally bested the 3DS version!

I feel some responsibility to go back, fire up the N64 edition and play it through.... maybe after I give the rest of the collection a blast.
So, decisions decisions, Ni No Kuni, Okami or Okami-den?

Both myself and my girlfriend have items to pick up from the same parcel motel today, so I guess I'll see her there. That's the extent of my plans.

Valentines day makes me sick. All those happy couples. Who needs it when you can be necking the wine, having a share bag of malteasers to yourself, watching love actually and screaming adele songs at stray cats. Like I will be doing. :(

Square's US store is having a decent sale on old stuff. There's Chrono Cross and a plethora of other knick-knacks around the $9 region. Not bad for some sealed PS1 goodness, right? Well, they won't ship outside of America, and there's no sign of such offers appearing this side of the Atlantic.

Granted, there's the Final Fantasy sale on PSN, but its luster is dampened by the fact they're the PAL releases, even though there's reportedly no issues with NTSC compatibility on digital downloads. A move that'd inspire a sincere 'what the ****?' from even the most lax gamer.

I have to say, I am liking the direction Ninty are taking in their choice of DLC for NSMBU, we're getting New Super Luigi U!
And it takes the regular game and twists the existing courses into new ones, sounds like a blast and if it's priced keenly could be class.
I'd prefer a physical copy though.....

I, for one, will not be concerned at all at the launch of the PS4.
There were exactly two games I was looking forward to on the PS3, Gran Turismo 5 and The Last Guardian.
The former turned out to be full of the largest installs and required downloads before segueing into the usual car collect'em up.
The latter seems to have evaporated.
The only other title I really wanted is the Ico/Sotc HD pack, both of which are PS2 games that I have already finished.
So, more than a tad of disappointment with the crummy PS3 then, no urgency to speak of to run out and get a PS4.
    The new Xbox?
Now, that was a console I had fun on, can it do it again in the next gen? Who knows?
I loved my PS2 and the PS3 was a no show for me.
The 360's centre of place in my current gen favour will have no bearing on the chances for success next gen, although the disappointment may be greater.
Ninty though, they seem to have at least a few good ideas and I can't wait to see what comes next, certainly recent Nintendo Direct videos have given me reason to be hopeful for the coming year on the big N's consoles.

Same here, so far I've zero interest in the next gen consoles. The PS3 was a near total disaster imo, so I'm in no hurry to splash out half a grand on its successor just yet. Come holidays 2014/spring 2015 though, I'll approach them then & see how they've nestled into place.

Seeing as the ps3 is a big dust magnet in my house the only one I'd be having an interest in is the new Xbox. I'll probably end up getting all 3 at some stage but definitely not on release, especially seeing as first run consoles these days, judging on the current gen, are doomed to failure which is a shame really.

I always said I'd get a PS3 only when The Last Guardian came out for it.

    Yep, still no PS3!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,729 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Jayus I use my PS3 daily, ok most of that is as a media player. But still I've knocked great value of it, even recently when my boiler broke I could use it to heat the room :)

360 rarely gets used and usually requires updates when it does finally boot. Never had a 'Gold' account either after the free one expired.

Biggest problem with both of the next gen consoles is that they are based on AMD's technology called 'Jaguar' - surely a bad omen...

    Sure Deadly Premonition isn't a ps3 exclusive, play it on a 360 ;)

It hasn't been Dawson's in years, but it's a really iconic (and ugly) building which just screams 'your childhood being destroyed in front of your eyes!!!'

PS3 a disaster? launch it was yeah, but built in blu-ray? chargeable pads included? hdmi? free online service? exclusives like Uncharted, LBP, God Of War, Gran Turismo, MGS4 to name but a few? psn+ is great as well, microsoft can feck off with their needing a live sub to use stuff like netflix. sony got so much stuff right where microsoft got it wrong.

    I've owned a 360 and PS3 and they're both great consoles

Yeah I was in bray last week and was very sad to see it being torn down. Used to love going on the bumper cars in there and playing Daytona and cruisin USA.

I've grown to like the PS3 more than the 360 although there was a while before Valkyria Chronicles were I never even used it. Free online, better sales and playing in actual currency and the fact that exclusive releases on the 360 have all but dried up make me like it more.

However on the part of Sony it was a total disaster. The original Xbox was an also ran console. Sony managed to throw away the lead they had with worlds best selling console system at the time to MS. The 360 really wasn't that great a console but compared to that early PS3 and the Wii it was leagues ahead.

I'm sorry... they are crap chargeable pads!
A ball sucking online service where you are obliged to install massive patches, on some titles on day 1, and the server seems to run on steam, not Steam you understand!
    Uncharted were fun but short
MGS4 has had plenty of comment here, I really did finish off the last boss while half asleep, hitting buttons randomly.
God of War is a spectacular franchise, but completely derivative, and there are just as good titles elsewhere, DMC anyone?

The 360 pad is pretty decent, aside from the d-pad.
The online service is great, even if you have the basic free pack.
Unless you bought a 360 in the first year or so out of the last 8, you got a 360 with HDMI.
Built in Bluray is nice, but most of my media resides on my server/hdd which I can stream just fine from most devices in my house, not restricted to the PS3 .
GT5? Forza 3 gave it a run for it's money, and Forza 4 handed it it's coat to hang up at that party.

To reiterate, I love my PS2, always have, and the range of games, great stuff, but the PS3 is waaaay off the mark.

Of course, that's just my opinion :)

So did anyone else read the big twist in Colonial Marines? It's the most idiotic thing they could have done and to make matters worse Fox count the games story as canon. I would have told the person who wrote the script that he will never work in the industry again. Anyway I'll spoiler it in case someone really does want to play the game but I'm warning you, you'll be horrified with how dumb it is.
You find a soldier from the original marine team from Aliens who then helps you. So what would make sense? Hudson? Apone? Others that had an off screen death. How about the according to Alien 3 dead Hicks. Yes, Hicks is found still alive. It's not even Fox doing a retcon and saying Alien 3 never happened. Apparently the company boarded the Sulaco, took Hicks, placed a fake body in his place (who? apparently according to Hicks it's explained away as 'a long story').

    I've owned a 360 and PS3 and they're both great consoles

Blu Ray - Check. A good start.
Chargeable Pads - Those pads were ok to use a decade ago, they're woeful now.
HDMI - Check. But most HDTV's have Component HD & the 360 came bundled with that wire.
Free Online Service - Appalling speeds, albeit yes it is free.
Exclusives - Some are good, some are bland. Not reason enough to depart with nearly €700 at the time.
PSN+ - Some nice incentives, but again, the speeds are so offputting. I'd much rather pay €40 a year for a service that can max out my connection in the way XBL does.

    Now, compared to the 360:

The Pad - far far superior pad to the Dual Shock.
The OS - crisp, responsive & fluid. A far cry from the mess that is the PS3's XMB.
The cost - was a cheaper more affordable console.
Updates - system updates that don't take on average a time frame than spans hours to download. System updates on the 360 are generally done within a few mins at most.
Installs - No mandatory installs which take an utter age. So couple that with a download that took forever, an install that took forever, a game update that took a while & you get the PS3's way of doing things.
Indy Market place - not sure if the PS3 has something similar?

Your correct in that both consoles have their merits, the 360 just 'feels' like a better console to own & use to me though

I was just dropping in here to post the same thing. Another piece of arcade history in ireland bites the dust. I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did in fairness, but it was well past it's glory days :(

How long has it been vacant? I wonder if there were any good gets to be got when it closed down?

I prefer the ps3 pads to the 360's, there I said it :P only on some games though, the d-pads on both are terrible I just prefer the sticks on the ps3. I prefer the interface of the ps3 when using it for media, its just faster.

Live was a great service its an outdated model now, psn+ is brilliant, free games, and free decent games at that. Red Dead for nothing? cheers Sony. Instead of MS and their stupid points system. Cross game chat isn't a selling point anymore, especially if you dont care about online chatting.

I'm no sony fanboy, christ knows they've had some serious missteps along the way, I just prefer the ps3 in general for my usage. I really wish I'd played Alan Wake again before I sold my xbox though

Was only down there the other night scoffing a Henry & Rose chicken burger n chips. That horrid looking building came up in conversation - was thinking about the poor people in the houses behind it. Looking out their window at that sh1te rather than the sea. Least they have fancy bins down there now. :D

Is there anything being built in it's place?

the updates are a complete pain in the hole alright, and I dunno what it is with anything coming from the console being as slow as a wet sunday even on a decent net connection. I had to update netflix recently, 12mb, took about 15 minutes on a 25mb connection, joke! and then the installation takes almost as long as the download, so yes thats a royal pain the arse.

I like the xmb, it is slow when you try to exit a game and haven't use the xmb in a while but aside from that it's grand, way more audio/video options than the xbox too if you like tinkering around with that stuff.

All valid criticisms. I definitely can't see myself buying a ps4 at launch, sure it was well over a year before the first good titles started showing up on ps3.
