What was that one on the DS? That was pretty good from what I remember. Other than that I don't remember enjoying any since the first PC AVP game.

That's what I would suggest. Simple, accessible, and above all very very addictive. Would be a nice introduction to gaming on your cab too, and a good excuse for keeping it around. Get your high scores dat file working and get a bit of scoreboard competition action going, and before you know it your missus will be hooked :-)

Gearbox can't use the Duke Nukem excuse with Colonial Marines.

I just watched wreck it Ralph. It was good, but it definitely needed more retro for my money. The main sugar rush part of the story was a bit of a snoozefest but all the old games and 2D characters were great. I loved the pixellated 2D sprites animation on all the little guys in ralph's building.

Sad news about colonial marines. Guess I'll have to hunt down a copy of Alien 3 for the Snes instead.
I remember having to wait to see my cousin who had a guide in a magazine to get past a section I was stuck on for days. Something to to do with a flame thrower or welding doors I think. Wonder if its a good as I remember.

On the plus side, Colonial Marines will at least be Ciderdude's GOTY From the Guardian, by far the most positive review:

It actually feels like a product out of time; one of those scrappy FPS games mid-tier publishers could boot out between Triple-A titles back in the day, when Metacritic didn't exist and a studio wasn't shut down if the game they made failed to sell a bajillion copies.

Actually, it's kinda sad to see Gearbox go from wunderkind half life Moddershall to making really interesting ww2 fps titles, then be involved in pig sh1te like Duke 4eva and now rubbing faeces into their hair and running down the road naked with Colonial Marines.
Beginning to look like another Driver3 as well, games like this hurt everyone from the poor schmuck who buys it, the company that buys the stock in, all the way to the publisher and the soon to be redundant dev team. And all the publicity they paid for, pity they didn't spend that budget on play testing instead!

It's overhyped to hell, but Borderlands is at least playable, fun and distinctive.

Gearbox's biggest problem seems to be they'll act as a 'figurehead' and tidy up the work of other studios so it can be put on a disc and call it a game, regardless of quality. Not sure what they get out of it, TBH, except for $$$. They're only tarnishing their reputation.

That and when it comes to the 'traditional' FPS they're still stuck in the mindset of the late 1990s. Opposing Force was good fun, but that was a long time ago.
