Officially in receivership here alright: http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0116/hmv-vouchers.html

Although its not expanded on, the article does contain this ominous, rather definitive statement:
Receivership means customers with vouchers will definitely face a loss.

Surprised it has escalated to full-on closures so quickly. The future has been bleak for ages, granted, but didn't think it was going to be a blanket closure (temporary or otherwise) without attempting a scaled-down operation first.

The higher ups must have know, so have been selling unredeemable vouchers for weeks knowing well people don't always use them immediately after christmas. I was going to use one on a nexus 7 when they came back into stock which obviously wont happen now, I bought it in currys instead cos I didnt want to wait and was just going to use the voucher on a game or itunes card or something.

sucks for the staff big time, wont be paid for december or so far in january, and government redundancy takes forever to come through.

Actually staff will be paid, they are secured creditors along with the revenue commissioners etc so they will be paid before anyone else. They 100% will get what they are owed.

My robbing them blind idea seemed like the best idea in the end :P

Thank god I don't have any HMV vouchers, as id be raging. But yeah lets just forget this happened and let it happen again in the future, ain't society neat!

    :D

  • Anyone know when exactly they'll be shut down? Or have they gone already and I hadn't noticed...

Specifically Grafton street and Dundrum (are there any other stores?), how many days have they left? I can't seem to find out anywhere...

Is there gonna be a clearance sale?

they have already closed. Don't know if they are going to re-open, I guess it depends on what it will come through the next few days, but doesn't look very likely, but you never know.

Too bad for the employees, I feel sorry for them, hope there is a way out of it for the company just for their sake.
Bad luck for the voucher holders too. Not likely that they will get anything out of them, I guess it will be a lesson for all of us for the future (maybe we can start giving actual money as gifts from now on, like we did in the old days)

2025 gigs: Selofan, Alison Moyet, Wardruna, Gavin Friday, Orla Gartland, The Courettes, Nine Inch Nails, Rhiannon Giddens, New Purple Celebration, Nova Twins

There was a good discussion on Newsnight about HMV and retail in general on the "High Street" as the British call it, one guy made a good point about the likes of Apple and Nike who have great websites and could have huge business's on that alone but still choose to maintain a presence in cities where people can drop in and "play" with or examine the stuff before they buy it, its also good PR for them. Maybe thats the future for a lot of companies, one "flagship" store to display their goods (maybe little or no stock) and then you order it there or online and get it delivered free. Another bloke, the music journalist David Hepworth who is in his 50s said that when he was a young bloke record stores and bookshops were like Cathedrals to him, places to kill time and browse around with your mates, I can totally identify with that, in the late 80s and early 90s I would spend whole saturdays with mates between the likes of Freebird Records, Base x, Virgin Megastore and book shops in town. Sad but inevitable that they are dying out. :(

With the store in Galway gone there isn't a place in town where I can head in and browse a decent selection and pick something up at at a reasonable price. All we have now are Xtravision with their rip off prices, damaged stock and poor selection. There's a few liquidation stores but they're stocked with exrental copies and cheap crap.

The old Zhivagos seems to have some alright stuff mixed in with the crap. They had the Breaking Bads at a decent price and I even saw a few Region 1 TV shows in there yesterday

Alot of old rubbish in there as well though.

The problem is that it is mostly junk and while there is the rare gem to be found it takes a lot of time to go through. They don't stock Blu-Ray which is also an annoyance as now the only place in town with them is Xtravision who really do know how to mark up prices. Guess its all online for me now which isn't always cheaper and lacks the fun element if being able to browse in store.

Does anyone know if any company is going to take over

 Utter nonsense, they have to abide by the same tax regulations as everyone else in retail, vat on goods is 23%, if they were charging you double why didn't you:

    1. Refuse to buy the product or
    2. Report them to the relevant authorities

Do you have a receipt with proof of this? Sounds like absolute nonsense, to be honest. I've bought dozens of items in Tower Records and have never been charged anything more than advertised price (I have been charged less in those glorious days of student discounts).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 Goof

I've just looked at a Tower Receipt and it breaks down the charge into tax and cost but it just equates to the total you've paid at the till. It is absolute garbage that you get charged more at the till.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,111 ✭✭✭Technocentral

Last two things I bought there were vinyl records, Doolittle by the Pixies, €18.99 on sticker, €18.99 at till and This is Happening by LCD Soundsystem (double LP, cheaper than I could get it online btw, was around 27 sterling online) €27 on sticker and €27 at till.

I bought about 12 CDs there with birthday money a few years back and when I didn't have near enough for last one they gave it to me for free because the employee there loved the album. Can't imagine that happening in HMV or any other large chain. :)

No wonder HMV are going out of business. Even their closing down thread has turned into a discussion about Tower Records. :pac:

Ha, fair play to them, generating a bit of publicity for themselves!

Think of all the free stuff they get if or when HMV start trading again.

Well, not quite free seeing as they are giving food and drink to the value of the vouchers (albeit at cost price to themselves).

Tower Records much better selection and prices are better.

Well I can safely say that is most definitely false, was in town today so popped into Tower Records been dying to get my hands on Dredd and Lawless to give them a viewing they had abut ten blu rays all old and that was it, shocking selection. Last time ill ever be going near the place.

Hopefully HMV is bought out and re opened soon.

Note sure if this has any impact on HMV in Ireland:

Jimmy Carr had a few funny lines re: HMV and Blockbuster on 8 out of 10 Cats just now:

"HMV aren't honouring vouchers anymore which is a shame considering all the thought that went into buying them and Blockbuster video says that they will continue trading as usual ,in other words staying open all day without a single customer"

Universal and Sony etc are reducing CD and DVD prices in attempt to "rescue" HMV apparently.

The film bigwigs would sell their granny if it meant keeping a physical product on the shelves. The sooner they accept that film is going the same route as music, the better for all concerned. Obviously not for HMV workers, etc.
