Do we have all the bodies that took part last season? I'd say there are posters who lost interest when the lockout set in and still don't know that the season is back on. Is 'Go NHL' in the league this year?

People will get caught by surprise when the league starts off.

Go NHL (Cena) is backup if we're struggling for numbers, as is Masked Man.

I've sent a lot of PM's to forum regulars and e-mails to everyone from last year.

Apologies, I've just noticed that Shanannigan has rejoined, welcome aboard!

I've sent this PM to the remaining 6 interested parties...

    Hi guys,

We currently have 9 teams registered for this years Boards.ie Fantasy NHL on Yahoo. I'm sending this out to the six of you who had indicated an interest but (as far as I know) have not yet joined. With the draft taking place on Sunday night it is very important that if you want to compete that you have your team registered before then. As we are not running a Head-to-Head league due to the shortened NHL season, everyone is welcome to join. The league will be a "Rotisserie" style, which is expained well here.

The first step is to go to the Yahoo Fantasy NHL page. This page should show you the below:

    qZG2M.jpg

From here, click "Join A League" and you should be prompted to log in to your Yahoo account if you are not already. If you don't have a Yahoo account you will need to register one.

The next step in the process is to join the Boards.ie league. On the left of the below screenshot, you need to enter the league ID (36022) and the password (lockedout).

    8z11p.jpg

The next page allows you to pick a Team Name, a Logo, and to choose your e-mail preferences. You should choose these, click Save and Continue, and once this process is complete your registration in the league should be finalised. If your team name doesn't match your username then you can post in the Fantasy Thread to let us know who you are.

    The Draft:

For those of you who are new to Fantasy Sports, the draft might seem quite daunting or confusing. But, honestly, it is probably the most fun part of the whole process. Unlike the Premier League Football league, each NHL player can only play with one fantasy team. So, if as predicted, Steven Stamkos goes to the team allocated first pick in the draft, no other team can choose him.

The draft positions are allocated 30 minutes before the draft. If there are 12 players in our league, then whoever gets 1st pick in the 1st round, will be 12th pick in the 2nd round, 1st again in the 3rd round and so on. This should neutralise any advantage held by having an early pick (I won last year despite having 12th pick in the first round).

The draft takes place at 21:30GMT this Sunday, 13th January, so you will need to be online to take part. If you cannot make it online but still wish to compete then you will "Autodraft" whereby the Yahoo computers will pick your team for you based on the highest ranked players available.

In the draft, you will need to fill the 16 spaces on your Fantasy team. These are:
    • 2 x Left Wingers
    • 2 x Centers
    • 2 x Right Wingers
    • 4 x Defencemen
    • 2 x Goaltenders
    • 4 x Bench (these can be from any of the above positions)

There is no set pattern or order you need to follow, if you feel a goaltender is going to be important to your quest for success, then you can pick a G first. The same goes for all the other positions.

As mentioned in the Fantasy Thread, the categories in which you will score points are:

    Skaters:

    Goals
    Assists
    Plus/Minus
    Penalty Minutes
    Powerplay Points
    Shorthanded Points
    Shots on Goal
    Blocked Shots

    Goaltenders:

    Wins
    Goals Against Average
    Save Percentage
    Shutouts

So it may be all well and good having a 60-goal sniper (though not this season, for obvious reasons!) but if he isn't blocking shots will he be letting the side down in that respect? It's all about achieving a strong balance between these categories.

The team roster changes will be made daily, on the day. It sounds like hard work, but you will be checking your scoring most days anyway so it will only take a few seconds on top of that!

If anyone has any questions on any of this, or issues joining the league, just drop me a PM or post in the thread itself. As I mentioned above, this really needs to be done before about 8pm on Sunday evening if you want to compete.

    Cheers,
    MJS

Are you a hockey fan at all? Or just Fantasy Sports in general?

Mostly just fantasy sports. I have a little interest in Hockey so this and a hopefully cheaper gamecenter seem like the best way to grow that.

Definitely. Good to have a few new faces on board, if even for a great 2013-2014 season once this half-season is done.

If you're looking for a team to watch, the Penguins are about as good as it gets.

    (Awaits backlash)

Yeah I'm definitely looking for a team to watch. Bruins never really stuck with me (and this was when they won the Stanley Cup), I'll keep an eye on the Pirates/Kings/Rangers but Minnesotta will probably be my main team to start the year.

Crap, I always make that mistake. Don't know how I can mistake the Penguins for a team that hasn't had a winning season in god knows how long... Maybe they're not the team for me.

Black, white and yellow too! Interesting fact, Pittsburgh is the only city where all major sports teams wear the same colours.

To be fair to MrJoeSoap, the Pens are a class outfit but given your open position I would shop around. However, I would steer well clear of the Maple Leafs (Toronto) and the Canucks (Vancouver) for reasons that will become clear as you get more accustomed to the NHL.

The Wild (Minnesota) wouldn't be the hottest team in the NHL by any stretch of the imagination. However, we did get Gaborik from them, so I hold nothing against them. I am a NY Rangers fan myself and we are a good watch with a good mix of physical and skillful hockey. Boston will be good to watch this season and Capitals (Washington) will probably be awesome in the regular season and woeful post season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,146 ✭✭✭aaronm13

Wouldn't mind taking part in this if there is any spots left. Big Hawks fan and can't wait till games start again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,546 ✭✭✭Masked Man

I know the Wild have been a very conservative team, but they signed the two biggest free agents (or so i'm reading anyway) and seem to have a very good farm system (Granlund is getting a lot of hype, and holy **** at this goal). It could be a good year and hopefully fun to watch.

I have a bit of thing for the Redskins so the Capitals are one of the teams I'm doing a bit of reading on. Boston is pretty much my default for teams to root for and I'll probably catch a few Bruins games.

I've got a couple of mock drafts done in the past few days, and I'm quite happy with my draft strategy. Anyone else been getting some practice in?

Did one the other day. Want to get another in before the game. Have a strategy that I am confident with but am thinking about a plan B now.

Thoughts on the Rangers set-up for the season? Gaborik seems very low in the rankings, not sure if I'd take a punt on Rick Nash though. Rangers D-men are huge when it comes to blocking shots.

Haven't got a chance ! Was on holiday most of the past week and been busy since. I'm going to be winging it to be honest :( Hopefully the first nfl game ends at a reasonable time and won't distract me too much :P

If there first game from last night is anything to go by, you won't have a hope!

As a patriots fan in his first fantasy hockey draft who hasn't had the time to do any mock drafts and only managed some research on goalies so far, winging it would be an understatement.

The big difference in ranking between different sites is also worrying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,146 ✭✭✭aaronm13

Did one last night but was taking to long so switched it on auto and watched the Broncos game. Some of the rankings are a bit of a head scratcher.

Think Toews is ranked very low and Rinne ranked very high to name two.

Toews PIM's are quite low, and he's never been a point-a-game player. Added to the concussion he suffered last year, I guess that is why he is down the rankings. Pat Sharp is the main man for the Hawks, in terms of Fantasy production. He was one of my key players last year.

Rinne led the league in wins last year, 3rd ranked Goalie seems about right.

Rinne is without doubt an elite goalie but Nashville are a weaker side this year so he's going to see a lot more shots this year. Towes is a frustratingly slow starter but is meant to be symptom free and just have a gut feeling about him. I might be biased though.

I am unsure about Nash in fantasy terms too. I have shortlisted him but as I said in the other thread, there is a massive difference between playing for the Rangers and the Jackets.

In the actual NHL, it really depends on the lines we play. In D-terms I think we are solid. Our shots blocked stats are awesome, as you said. We have just, within the hour, re-signed Del Zotto, who for me is our best D, "pound for pound". Hank is an interesting one. If he gets injured, we are screwed. I watched Martin Biron on a few occasion, in the flesh, twice last season, and he always fails to impress. Hank started in 75% of our games last season, so we need him to play 36-40 games this year in a compressed schedule, which is tough on him.

The real key to success is how we use Gaborik, Nash and Richards. Nash can play left or right, so do you build one strong line or "spread the wealth". All 3 should play on the same line on the PP but then I would go with :

    Nash - Richards - Callahan
    Kreider - Stepan - Gaborik

If the PP clicks, Torts gets the lines right and we play a less conservative brand of hockey (more SOG), I think we will finish top three and have a really good bash at the cup.

I think we peeked too soon last year i.e. during the regular season and ran out of puff against the Devils. I still think a good skillful hockey team like the Pens will beat us in the playoffs though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,553 ✭✭✭Fiery mutant

Haven't had a chance to be honest. Just going to have to wing it and hope to get what I want. I do have a couple of people in mind who I will be looking to pick off first, so hopefully they will still be available when I get to them.

    Looking forward to it.

I think he could be even better than last season too, if Crosby plays a full season.

Gotta say that was fun. Although any strategy I had kinda went out after the first couple of rounds as guys started to drop.

Got my first pick in Sequin, think he is going to have a stellar season, or half season should I say. Glad to get Bobby Ryan too, would love to see him become a Bruin.

Really wanted Shea Weber, but happy to get Seidenberg anyway. Can't wait for Saturday now.

Happy enough with my team. Think about three times a player was picked that I wanted just before my turn but that's all part of the fun. Should make the season all that more interesting.

Yeah but having no.1 means you don't pick again until 24 !

You nicked Marchand and Wideman from in front of my nose. Was really hoping to get Bergeron, Marchand and Seguin together again this year. They were fantastic for me last season.
