I presume none of the coaches have been canned yet? Losing Pagano and Bisaccia would be big setbacks.

In terms of free agency, I don't think we're married to any of the running backs on the roster apart from Matthews so I think it would make sense to look to upgrade the position thru FA if the money's right.

At WR, Ramses Barden jumped out at me. Off the top of my head I think he's 6'5 or something like that. Would suit Rivers.

Along the OL, I think in an ideal world we would come out of the offseason with 2 new starting tackles. We probably can't afford to make a big splash in FA but maybe with a bit of draft day manoeuvring we could pick up Lewan/Matthews and Barrett Jones/Warmack

There seems to be a lot of FA safeties. There'd surely be someone to replace Bigby

Hey!, great to have another Bolthead sharing opinion.

My understanding is Bisaccia will be gone. He wants a HC gig and rumour is he will get it at the college level. I'd be surprised were Pagano to be let go by the new HC but u know yourself a new HC is the new boss and ultimately picks his own staff. Dean said all bar 2 coaches are in contract/will remain so until the HC arrives.

I saw someone else talking up Barden on another board earlier. Sounds like another Alexander type in terms of size etc.

Pretty much agree with all of this but I'd rather English over SP based on how English finished the season (stupid hitting the punter penalty aside)

I'm amazed to see you guys talking English up. I truly believe he will amount to nothing and will not be on the team in 2013. He is not an NFL quality player. Bring in Barwin or Spencer I say.

I think English has all the skills, he was brilliant at college level. Much better then Clay Mathews, hate when Charger fans complain we didn't take Clay when he was expected to go in the 2nd.

He will be gone though, he just cant get on the field, I think he would be very good in a 4-3 defence.

1st interview was held yesterday, rumoured to be Jimmy Raye, Wolf said he has received over 50 calls.

Rivers imo can throw to anyone, but he needs a pocket, most sacked QB in the league this year.

Pitty one off season wont fix the problems. Excited about our front 7 though.

Rochey u gotta get back down to earth if you think Larry has all the skills etc. He played DE in college and at a smaller college too. The transfer to OLB in the Pros has been to much for him. Yes he has been v unfortunate with injuries but in 2012 he seemed to be 100% and was not a factor. I'm not one of those saying we should have drafted Matthews because hindsight is 20:20. Having said that I did raise an eyebrow when they announced English as the pick. Mind you when I heard the name Mouton announced I was almost hospitalised.

Barden has been a huge let down in the 4 years since the Giants have drafted him. He basically did nothing in his 1st 3 seasons but then against the Panthers in week 3 he had 8 catches for 130 yards (panthers D was awful that night)

But he has hardly had any playing time since. He probably needs a change of scenery because Coughlin prob doesn't trust him so he has no chance. That said I would temper your expectations on this guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,277 ✭✭✭Justin10

I think English always was around the QB and his problem was he over pursued.
That is why I think he be better in a 4-3.

If an OLB is getting around the QB as a pass rusher then he is doing his job.

Problem with poor Larry is he never plays, real pity but hopefully he finds job somewhere.
Reminds me of Buster Davis, looked promising his rookie year but then just never played.

Marc Ross, Tom Gamble, and David Caldwell

That is an impressive list of candidates for the GM job.

Rich Bisaccia has left for Auburn as a special teams and running backs coach.

Surprised with that as he is highly thought of around the league.

:( So I wonder how many special teams blunders we can expect next season...

I see Steve Crosby is available....:pac:

On a serious note, is John Pagano drawing any interest? Did a great job with you guys this year

You mean as the SD HC?, no chance.

I guess we're all hoping the new HC retains him to be honest.

It's interesting... I wonder did he take his eye off the ball down the stretch knowing Norv was going and he was not being considered as a HC in SD. Apparently he was living in SD and his family stayed back home. The move to Auburn is a combination of those 2 things. Many say he'll be a HC somewhere someday. No doubt the Auburn gig is paying well anyway.

Its a shame we couldn't keep him but he really owes us nothing, he left the Bucs to come to SD and he fixed our STs problems almost immediately.
Hope he does great at Auburn and i hope we find a great replacement.
Can't wait until we can get our GM and HC in place, need someone to bring a bit of direction to the franchise, feels like we've been going nowhere the last few months

Totally agree, we can only hope Dean has been working real hard these last few weeks since it is 16 December (officially) when he decided that he was letting the lads go. I wonder when he first spoke to Wolf about coming in a a consultant. It will be interesting to see what happens to the coaches in situ too. Hope Pagano sticks as DC, so far so good with him.

I would be shocked if Arians wasnt the head coach. He is the only name we have been linked with I don't want :(

Second GM interview done, they are flying to New York now to interview Marc Ross. Disappointed we haven't interviewed Gamble yet.

Bit of a late Christmas present for you guys :)

The Chargers will have between 40-50M in cap space this off season
That is pretty amazing, of course Vasquez and Cason be two contracts to come from that and Gaithers 6M and that can be spread out over his contract period but even with that, this is still a massive amount of cap space for us.

Gaithers money is not guaranteed so he will be gone.

Im comparison we had 45m last offseason and signed two pretty big contracts with Meachem and Gaither, so OLine and corner could be addressed this offseason :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,256 ✭✭✭Molly

Where are you getting that figure from?

There is so much we could do with that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,277 ✭✭✭Justin10

In the Chargers forum on Chargers.com

A guy broke it down and that was figure he gave, of course cant give an exact figure because he dosent know what the cap figure will be and is predicting who will be cut so that is why there is a variance between 40-50M

Realistically we be looking at around 40-45M

This from the Chargers.com forum from a user called LAboltfan

As per my rough estimate, the Chargers have nearly $58M to spend on free agents! (if that's true AJ and Dean were preparing for this offseason.) - Let's be conservative and agree on $50M.
    Players Under Contract:
    C Colin Baxter $555,000
    C Nick Hardwick $3,100,000
    CB Shareece Wright $555,000
    CB Marcus Gilchrist $734,600
    DT Cam Thomas $575,000
    DT Corey Liuget $1,130,976
    LB Andrew Gachkar $555,000
    LB Darryl Gamble $555,000
    LB Donald Butler $575,000
    LB Jonas Mouton $671,670
    LB Larry English $1,275,000
    LB Takeo Spikes $3,000,000
    P Mike Scifres $3,000,000
    QB Philip Rivers $12,000,000
    RB Ryan Mathews $1,195,500
    S Darrell Stuckey $575,000
    S Eric Weddle $6,000,000
    S Atari Bigby $1,500,000
    T Steve Schilling $555,000
    T Jeromey Clary $4,000,000
    T Jared Gaither $4,500,000
    TE Antonio Gates $4,500,000
    TE Ladarius Green: $480,000
    WR Vincent Brown $555,000
    WR Robert Meachem $5,000,000
    WR Malcolm Floyd $3,100,000
    WR Eddie Royal $3,000,000

    $63,242,746

Immediate holes at "Starter" positions include: NT, CB (Right), OLB, LG, RG, WR (#5), Backup RB (#1,2)

At this point, having 25 free agents may not be so bad. I look at the above list and think that we've got a good core (excluding the OLine).

Then i look at the guys we lost (and their last season's earnings):
C Mike Windt $540,000 - We used to pay Binn $1M per season.
    CB Dante Hughes (buyout) $150,000
CB Antonine Cason $1,240,000 - Someone else will offer him big money!
CB Quentin Jammer $4,000,000 - Offer him a decent guarantee with a lot of years and he might stay.
    DE Jacques Cesaire $825,000
DE Jarret Johnson $1,000,000 - I bet he's cut. Pagano's voice will determine a lot.
    DE Luis Castillo (buyout) $2,050,000
DT Vaughn Martin $615,000 - Kept and paid.
DT Aubrayo Franklin - $1,000,000 - Assumably asked to stay.
    ILB Travis LaBoy $1,500,000
G Louis Vasquez $565,000 - At double the price he'd probably still be worth the money.
    G Tyronne Green $1,260,000 - Not sure.
    G Kris Dielman (buyout) $1,700,000
    K Nick Novak $700,000 - Probably retained
    K Nate Kaeding $2,000,000
    LB Antwan Barnes $1,600,000
LB Shaun Phillips $4,400,000 - Not sure he's worth $4M per season, or if any team thinks so.
    RB Jordan Todman (buyout) $128,094
    [strike]RB Curtis Brinkley $540,000 [strike]
    T Marcus McNeill (buyout) $5,200,000
    WR Richard Goodman $540,000
WR Donario Alexander (RFA) $540,000 - He'll be tendered a low amount and paid accordingly.

    +Add+ ~$8M (????)
    ~$70M

Salary Cap was $121M in 2012...

    Net: ~$67M

He gets a figure of 64M but I dont agree with his re-signings, I think more will be resigned but even so if you took another 14M off that we be at 50M

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

Thats a nice amount of money to have, hopefully our new GM has a good plan with what to do with it. I'd not be expecting any huge FA signings but we can get a few good players in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 829 ✭✭✭Ronaldinho

Most of the rookies aren't on that list??

I had no idea we had that much to spend. Maybe we've got a legitimate shot at getting Jake Long if he's up for grabs? The front office may be a bit wary given what's happened with Gaither, but that would give us a lot more flexibility in the draft. IMHO, as things stand, we're locked into needing to draft Joekel/Lewan/Matthews. But... if we could get a quality starter in FA then we can go with the BPA. It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that Milliner or Teo could fall to us. Also if someone came calling we could also trade back and still end up with the likes of a Warmack/Mingo/Montgomery/Vaccaro at the back end of the first round, as well as getting some ammunition to move up from our spot at 11 in the second.

Looking at those salaries....it's time to pay Donald Butler methinks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,277 ✭✭✭Justin10

Ye your spot on well done, even so as we can see by rookie contracts there pretty small, Donald Butler is on nothing :D Poor guy needs to get paid.

Its a good indicator. I Just added on Alexander for 1M Cason for 2M Vasquez for 3M Jammer for 1.5M Martin for 1M Franklin 1M Windt 1M Novak 1M. Clearly I'm over paying them but we still where in a really healthy position towards our salary cap. I think we should be looking at around 40M which could easily get us a player that would really help, a guy like Levitre from Buffalo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,017 ✭✭✭Leslie91

No doubt about it Donald Butler should be priority 1 for the new GM. He needs to be locked up.

After him I guess we should look about bringing Vasquez back at a hometown discount. He's decent but not great. With a proper RT beside him he might actually become something.

We're so thin at corner that bringing back Cason at a fair price is probably necessary too. He was not a fave of AJ or Norv but hey, the new guy might like him/improve him. Jammer by all accounts is gone or at least has played his last game as a corner in SD. I wonder would he come in and backup Taylor at SS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

Is Bigby under contract next year? I think we need a back up plan in case Taylor takes a while to heal, not everyone heals as well as Pieterson.
I'd prefer Jammer on the roster over bigby, you see Woodson playing SS for Green Bay at 36, Jammer is only 33.

Cason is an interesting one, i was ready to let him walk during the season but in the second half he improved a lot. I would hate to give him a huge contract but he could be worth re-signing for top 20 CB money. If we don't re-sign him we have a huge hole to fill at CB, Wright and Gilchrist show potential but i'd hate if they were both starting in Sept

I think Bigby is under contract to end 2013 season but he's not the answer for me. Hopefully Taylor can come back ala someone like Butler and look great in his sophomore campaign. Were Jammer to stick around and maybe play SS all through training camp I'd like to see this. I guess it might be July/August earliest before Taylor is 100% anyway.

Like you said if Cason was to come back for the 'hometown discount' then I'm all for it. But DFlo was in a similar position and the Jags came in and overpaid. Corners get the money at the end of the day and no doubt some team will be silly enough to overpay for Cason. I'm happy that Wright can be on one corner, the other worries me.

My 2013 Mock Draft (If we did nothing in FA):
    1) Eric Fisher (OT)
    2) Larry Warford (G)
    3) Chase Thomas (OLB)
    4) Tyrann Mathieu (CB)

I don't think Bruce is draft elligible anymore :)

Rumour has it Jake isn't leaving A&M though :( Although I think Taylor Lewan is grading a head of him at the moment anyway

Didn't Lewan get shown up pretty badly by Clowney in a bowl game last week? I know Clowney is a special talent but i thought that would still affect his draft outlook. I think he'll be a very good player but i haven't seen him rated above Joeckel yet
