Sorry for my rambling post but heres my two cent so far on my Halo 4 experience. Bear in mind I'm a VERY casual "gamer". ie when I get a chance.

So where do I start. I suppose first off I'm absolutely loving it right now. I've played little over a hundred online matches and just cant get enough of it. Played a roughly 2 hours last night, which is a lot for me and I nearly came first for the first time but was pipped to the post into second place but at least I feel like I can win a match where as in COD i couldnt even get close cause of bloody airstrikes, etc RUINING the game. On a side note I trade in COD MW3 yesterday to get rid of it.
I'm consistantly coming in around 3rd place though which I'm pretty happy with to be honest.

Playing Regicide mainly as I feel the team games are incredibly disorganised when you dont have friends to play with and as much as I wish I could get to know other people here etc to play with my times playing the game are generally all over the place so probably no point.

Haven for me is by far and away the best map. Absolutely love the confined spaces and corridors.

Unlocked the supressor I think its called last night at level 22 I think it was. Savage gun, used in conjunction with sticky grenades. Works pretty well for me.

Looking forward to getting home to play it this evening I must say which for me is mad cause I usually get bored of games very quickly.

I havent even started the campaign yet. Might this weekend. Played the very first level of spartan ops found it a bit boring if I'm honest but that said it was only the very first mission so I'd say it gets better and in fairness its a massive amount of content. On that point I think there really is something for everyone in this game. From the campaign to spartan ops to massive amounts of multiplayer its the first game in a while that I'm glad I've bought for full price on launch.

All in all I think 343 have done a great job. I dont think the "COD" type levelling has ruined it either. I think that anyone starting with the basic weapons can jump in a lot easier than in COD. The last Halo game I played was Halo 3 and I did like it but for the casual gamer I found the proper gamers if you will won out too easily because of knowing the maps better than me and knowing where all the power weapons etc were. For me I think its a more level playing field now. Love the way theres very little in the way of people crouching behind random things to snipe you or that because of promethian (or whatever its called). Again not a rant about COD because in fairness to it I got some enjoyment out of it but this used to wreck my head. Spawn, die, spawn, die.

Looks like the other games I bought recently (Forza 4 and Gears 3 in particular) will have to wait now cause I cant see myself putting this down anytime soon.

Lastly I havent bought the new maps yet. Are they worth it for the likes of regicide playing or are they more geared towards the bigger maps, like big team slayer type stuff.

Hope that helps anyone considering buying the game or moving from the COD franchise.

Halo 3 was about the best that halo Multiplayer ever got for me. It was a totally amazing game, with amazing maps, and great weapon and equipment balance, but it also came at a point in my life when i had lots of time to play it, so i was decent and knew all the maps and a lot of the tricky spots. Pulling off headshots across the map with the sniper rifle on sandtrap, from that sweet sniping spot on the top of the sand dune was an amazing buzz.

Did anybody else bother to collect all the skulls and get the hayabusa armour?:D

Re: The new maps, they're all quite big. The smallest one is Harvest, which is just a tiny bit bigger than Complex. It's the only one of the new maps that pops up in the 4v4 playlists, the other two are massive but very cluttered.

I find Spartan Ops is better in Co-Op, even if it's with a bunch of randomers. There's not going to be a new episode until the new year, at the moment there's a best of selection of chapters for online play. Starting next week with the first they'll be putting each episode online for a week again. If nothing else, its a good way to level up quick, you'll rack up about 5000 XP per chapter easily.

Complex is already too big for me. I keep getting dropped into team slayer and regicide matches on it, on the losing team because someone has quit, and it's a headwrecking map to play with "lone wolf" type randomers.

It's the kind of map where a team that's playing with teamwork will wipe the floor with one that's not. It's bad enough that the game seems to spawn you miles away from your teammates when you die, but when your team is a bunch of online idiots all running around like headless chickens and playing with their mics off, there's very little you can do to stay alive in all that open space. All you can do is hole up indoors and hope your team finds you before the opposing one.

Yeah noticed this big time in slayer games... if your the last person standing on your team after an attack most of the time you're better off hunkering down and waiting for your team mates to make the epic trip back to where all the action is

I haven't really noticed any problems with spawn points...

Just over a month in and I have to say it has more than held my interest, still really enjoying the online play

Just hurry up and nerf that feckin needler :pac:

You can play all of them but you can only play one episode a week online. Thats with randomers though, I imagine if you have a party going you can play any episode you want.

Episode 1 will be available again next week afaik. I'd also be happy to play through any episode with folks on here if they want.

Might hold you to that if I can organise an evening or weekend that I'm actually free for enough time to play it uninterupted.

All maps are like this. Teams not working together / people without mics deserve to lose every game they play. Team games are about working together. I hate being matched with micless people.

If you dont actually have a mic fair enough. If you refuse to use it to help your team, this applies to you.

Personally I think there should be specific areas for those that choose to play with mics instead of this being thrown in anywhere type thing.
Its not like they're expensive so noone can use that as an excuse not to have one.. this ones about a fiver...

I'm not saying say no to anyone without a mic, just give people who want to work as a team a place with like minded people and then the lone wolves can go wander in the field with the other lone wolves is all.

It's very frustrating alright. Was playing CTF on Shatter yesterday. I got in our teams Mantis, destroyed the opposing one's pretty quick which should have given us a huge advantage. I was talking down the mic trying to get some of the team to rally around the mantis and come and get the flag, they just ran around like headless chickens while I got shafted trying to nab the flag. Lost the match 4 fecking 0!

This is why I just dont bother with big maps and team games in general. Its just infuriating to be honest.

Its all about regicide. Youre the king!! .. Never tire of hearing that.

Before this came out I wasn't playing too many games on Xbox live, have noticed now that I'm back on it quite a bit that it seems mic usage has dropped significantly. When I do venture into matchmaking solo and get paired with randoms, the vast majority of the time there isn't one player on my team with a mic.

It's mad, I remember back playing Halo 2&3 and you'd end up having to mute half of the bloody Xbox Live members cuz noone would shut up, and now noone talks at all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Korvanica

Honestly, now the mic usage is like COD (not bashing it). Noone has one, and noone works as a team. The few people that have had mics have been annoying 12 year olds who dont call out enemy locations and only talk crap.

There used to be preferences in reach and halo 3 for that. There may still be in Halo 4, but I'm not sure they make a blind bit of difference to what turns up in search.

Maybe we should just start up a Boardsies group where boardsies who always have their mics on 100% of the time post their gamertags and agree to party up and play as a team online. The more members we get, the better chance we'll have of always having enough people online to team up at any one time.

I've just made a new thread. If you chat, post your info HERE

Just a quick question....I got the LE and it includes 6 specializations, some people say they are not unlocked until you reach level 50, others say two should have been unlocked at the beginning, does anybody know which is right?

Was discussing this with mates of mine the other night and we all agreed that party chat was both the best and worst update to XBL. While it allowed you privacy with your mates and protection from the profanity and abuse to be expected on live, it also removed you from socialising with other players. 2 years ago, I had around ninety friends, sixty percent of which were all met through XBL. With people having moved on, switched console, fallen out of touch, and the difficulty in meetig new players as everyone is in party chat, not only has my friends list dropped to forty, but around sixty percent are now people I know. It's impossible to meet and interact with decent players when everyone is in party chat with their mates or in my case, has their mic off because I never come across players who do have their mics in.

I'm pretty sure you have to reach level 50. I think they might be getting mixed up as the regular edition only has 2 specialisations (wetwork & operator i think) to choose from but you still have to reach level 50 before you can use them. After that it's ten levels for each of the 8 specialisations.

With the majority of my assignments done I finally got around to starting the campaign last night, completed the first level and felt it was a bit easy. I know it's only an introduction and isn't going to be full on but even in comparison to the first level of Halo CE it seemed a lot easier, and Elites seem to die fairly easily.

What difficulty were you playing? I found it easy going fighting the covenant too but the difficulty ramps up a bit in the 3rd or 4th mission I think.

Have it going on Legendary, actually had to double check and make sure it was set on that. The grunts seem to take a lot more bullets with automatic weapons than previous Halo games but the Elites seem less likely to move around. From the way some people were talking on here I thought it would be a bit more challenging, but hopefully it picks up like you said.

Yeah they tend to stand still and let you just pick them off from afar, shoddy AI there!

It's def one of the easiest Halo games on legendary IMO.

I didn't have a lot of trouble on Legendary. Some tricky spots here and there but it was a lot easier than I was expecting.

I'd have to agree, it seems like there was a big step back from 343 in terms of the smartness of the AI. Even the knights, which were tougher, are very much prone to run & gun, where if you spray enough bullets in their direction they'll just stand there and get hit until they keel over.

I thought the AI in reach was some of the best the series had to offer. The elites in that game dance around like wacko jacko. If you weren't engaging them with the right weapons, from the right distance, forget it, they'd moonwalk right out of the way of your shots, and it didn't matter how much ammo you had.

Some of their flanking tactics were tricky too. Half of them would distract you with loads of cover fire, while a bunch of them would flank round the sides and never shoot at you until they had you in a crossfire or until you saw what they were at. Sneaky hoors!

There also never seemed to be any shortage of weapons in Halo 4, except on the later levels, which was something that made the game seem a lot easier than the other installments. You were never forced to think about things like "there's feck all weapons around, how am i going to take down these 2 elites and 6 grunts with only 1 clip of a BR and one frag to my name.

Agree with this, when I was playing Reach I got stuck on the first encounter with 3/4 Elites on the very first level for ages, they would roll from side to side repeatedly and take a lot of bullets to take down, and if you tried charging at them the result was a Brogue kick to the face.

Have only played the first level but there seems to be a shortage of decent weapons, only came across the BR at the end of the level and used all the bullets taking out Elites and Jackals from the distance, seems to be plenty of the covenant equivalent to the assault rifle lying around though.

AI not as good alright, I've picked off a fair few elites and the likes without any movement.... and the weapons are a plenty too... I've yet to do it on Legendary but I'm it sounds like it's far easier than 3 and Reach! Legendary on 2 was a chore at some points

My most recent experience is the re-released Halo CE, and that was a chore too at points, particularly the 'Truth and Reconciliation' level. First time I attempted it I had ditched me Sniper Rifle before getting to the hanger bay aboard the ship and found it impossible to do, had to go back and redo the whole level.

Playing for headshots is more important in this one. Enemies can be bullet sponges otherwise, especially the grunts. You could waste 2 or 3 clips of an assault rifle taking a bunch of them out before you get to the elite in command, but half a clip's worth of headshots from your pistol will save you that ammo.

Close in on elites and engage them individually from middle distance, ideally with some cover nearby. Don't get too close though, or you'll get an overpowered smack in the chops for your trouble. A needler or a plasma pistol+headshot will wipe them out in seconds. When you see lots of them around, try to keep one or the other handy.

Jackals should be your first target when you see them, because they run too much interference with everything else otherwise. Engage them at long distance and aim for the head. If they're using shields hit them In the hand first (left side) then in the head when they drop their shield. Any more than two or three trigger pulls on a precision weapon is too much ammo to be using to take down a jackal. get yourself to a distance where that's all it takes you to take them out before you engage them.

Am a bit further in now and have to say things have picked up since the
    Promethean Knights
were introduced. Still some dodgy AI though with them standing still and taking repeated headshots at times.

There also seems to be a lot of 'defend this spot until I can do...' scenarios. Am just past the part where you have to do this with
    the mammoth
and thought it was never going to end.

Ah playing it on legendary co-op there today

Pretty damn easy so far nothing annoying or hard at all to sort out... also noticing lots of glitches and some action bits with a lot going on almost got it to stagger and lag on a local setting

Banshees are awful to manoeuvre too... Has a flimsy feel to it or something in general

Jackals are lasting forever and probably the most annoying things

That's something that crept in around Halo 3:ODST, when they invented firefight, and it's been in the series since then. Reach was a hoor for it as well. "Hold this area while a random AI does something irrelevant to the gameplay and we chuck a load of enemies at you".

It's a cheap way to get some play time out of a game by using the minimal amount of programming time & resources. Just like backtracking (which there's a fair amount of in halo 4 too. Fight your way through a load of enemies to get somewhere, then when you reach the goal, turn around and fight your way back through a load more that just got dropshipped in behind you...

Aim for the head with a rifle or pistol and they go down with one shot. Not playing for headshots on legendary just means you'll be short of ammo a lot.

XBL seems completely f**ked tonight. It's my first evening on since Christmas day and it looks like the servers have been totally overloaded with people getting halo 4 for presents or something. I played for over an hour and got 2 games. The rest of the time I was rebooting the Xbox, reconnecting to live, reloading the game etc. Annoying...

They'll be introducing a ranking system in the new year.

yeah i read that but still confusion over if its like the reach ranking system where it can only be viewed by looking a gamertag up on waypoint or the conventional H3 one

there's a petition on one of 343 forums to introduce the competitive system for competitive players and to introduce team snipers and other competitive playlists

They really should bring the H2 ranking system, nothing worse than having a couple of bad games and going down 2 levels.....

Then you always felt you have to pull it together....

And to me clans are still sorely missed....

It was great, but could be very unfair at times! I remember when you got into the 30s/40s it could take 6/7 consecutive wins to go up a level. BUT, you could win 3 and be half way through your current level, lose ONE game and you'd go down a rank!

I hope something is introduced soon though. I am still enjoying playing H4 online but can see it getting a little stale soon if there isn't a more competitive element added.

It was pretty tricky at the higher ranks alrite I made sure I had a good team before I went into the ranked games

It was so competitive and intense
