How cool is that! Is it official? Or a Sharp tv with a dodgy clone inside it

Sharp science fiction-1 or SF-1 SNES TV. Seems legit from reading about it elsewhere. There was a famicom one as well from sharp.

Licensed by Nintendo alight. I want one!

Wasn't there an LCD TV released over here with a PS2 in it? Not nearly as cool though...!

Here we go, Sony Bravia KDL-22PX300

Now that is a handsome piece of hardware (as the actress said to the bishop)
And I'd not only know what to do with it but where to stick it too (as the bishop said to the actress)

Mario and luigi have opened up a pizza delivery place/chipper right beside me. Plumbing business must be slow these days.

Wanted to scream at the lecturer today. He was trying to show games as art and was showing two games off to back his point. He picked the pretty but artistically vapid Limbo and.... Heavy f*cking Rain.

Limbo...worst 1,200 points I've spent in my life. It almost makes me want to turn away from the indie scene because of it (seriously, how much praise did this get from the reviewers?).

Limbo has a wonderfully morbid atmosphere, a perfectly considered art style and an infectious sense of wicked black humour - in that sense, I can easily see how it recieved some deserved praise. The fact that the gameplay and story are no match for some of its peers is a shame (although gamers and critics shouldnt be so hasty to dub every indie game that could as the next Braid), but its still distinctive and engaging. Kinda like Heart of Darkness (a partially forgotten oddity).

I did like Limbo, some poorly thought out puzzles spoiled it a little towards the end but it was a bit like flower, pretty but as an artistic statement, there was nothing there.

I dont think a bold narrative or thematic statement is a prerequisite for earning the fabled 'art' label - sometimes the experience is more than sufficient. When I play Flower, the atmosphere is just enthralling and relaxing - the familiar environmental message only barely registers. Its great when the rare game can be a completely unique experience and say something insightful too, but sometimes the form can be all the 'substance' needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,999 ✭✭✭Nerdkiller1991

What really surprises me about Limbo is that it took about 6 years to develop and in the end, it only has 30% of the content it originally had when it was completed. What a waste.

Well I found Flower far from relaxing. I found the motion controls an absolute pain to use and I was really frustrated trying to use them.

Yeah, you would have wonder did Sony have a metaphorical gun to the devs head, insisting that the "features" of the sixaxis be inserted into the game, so making a crappy controller appear relevant.
Sadly, it didn't work, the controller still sucked, and hasn't gotten better with the addition of the dual shock that should've been there in the first place.

It's telling, in fact, that when Ninty were ripping off a controller as a model for their proper pad for the WiiU, they ripped of the 360's offering rather than the PS effort.

The Vita seems to be cursed with Sony efforts to also make the dumb as rocks rear touchpad relevant, just another expense added to a handheld that reeks of feature creep.

I cant wait to see the next next gen controllers because everyone knows that motion controls are gimmicky and they have been rammed down our throats, and I think I'm right to say that most gamers will use a "classic" controller over a PS move, kinect etc. But could the trend also go back the way? I wouldn't imagine so but developers need to remember we were able to play plenty of games without the ****ty move!

Sorry, but all I can now see of Ol' Jack is you standing in the middle of that Sega Genesis motion sensor peripheral doing leg sweeps in a pair of pyjamas!

    But seriously,
    A current gen question...
Is a disk only copy of Ridge Racer Unbounded and Doom 3 bfg edition worth 30 all in?
I want them both but fear its a false economy.

Nope, there are no Ridge Racer games after Ridge Racer 2 anyway...only car games with less fun controls, & no soul with Ridge Racer branded on them.

Also, motion controls need to be blasted with p1ss.

That's not all that unusual TBH. I'd say we'd all be surprised at the amount of features and content that barely make it past prototyping phase. 30% content is not automatically a waste - it could be an efficient use of material to make the game better. Less repetition, weak or mediocre levels cut / combined into a more worthwhile whole, proposed mechanics not working out etc... The editing process of anything - whether game, book, album or film - is often where the final work is shaped. Six years is a long time (not unique to games - the film Magaret was stuck in post-production *ahem* limbo for half a decade), and the finished project isn't perfect, but it was a seemingly uncommercial release by a very, very small team which partially excuses it.

I started playing through a few games I missed years ago on the old Nintendos there recently as I had a DS that was lying about unused. Bought some old GB advance games.

Started with Donkey Kong Country - Seriously fantastic game. Completed it, well beat the final boss.. Still loads of extras to go back to.

Then went on to Donkey Kong Country 2 as I enjoyed the first one so much to be honest - Again great game but it is pretty tough especially comin to the end of the game some levels I nearly lost the plot on altogether. Got to the final boss and havent beaten him yet. Might not either.

So I've moved on to Super Mario 3. Regarded as one of the best video games ever, I had played it at a mates house was about it as kids.
Maybe its just me or maybe just moving from DK to Mario I'm finding it damn hard. Gonna take me AGES to complete this one I reckon if at all.

Dont get me wrong I'll keep at but is it just me or where old skool games a lot harder than what we're used to these days??

Really enjoying going back to the old games btw. Major change from xbox online shooters and Fifa.

Nope, they were definitely harder. Back in the days where the difficulty was cranked up so you didn't finish the game too quickly, say six hours, cause there wasn't that much data to work with, so everything was relatively brief in terms of distance, thus getting your investment's worth. Needless to add, but I will, cause it's what I do, gaming's definitely changed.

Are you going to play DKC3? I liked that loads, in spite of the ropey overworld, which got messy at times. It got rid of a lot of the random pitfalls found at the start of the series.

Thats ok. Thought it was just me. I'll definately be getting DK 3 but I kinda went on a bit of an ebay buying spree pre xmas and bought.

    Mario Kart Super Circuit
    Super Mario advance
    Super Mario advance 2
    Yoshis Island
For the DS itself then I bought Mario 64 ds.

So with that said cant see me buying the 3rd DK for a while :o

On top of that I just bought Forza 4, Halo 4 and Gears of War 3 for 360 so Ive kinda got my hands full. Roll on time off at xmas!!!

Love the Gba, get the Castlevania and Metroid games.
    Drill Dozer is amazing too.

The Donkey Kong Country games seem so meh to me now. Now that the graphics look absolutely appalling there's a solid platformer under there but they aren't anything special. The same tricks are repeated throughout all the levels while a much better game like Mario will introduce something new each time.

If you think the last boss of DKC2 is tough there's an even more bull****tier version if you beat the game with 102% of the items.
