In fairness most manufacturers recommend a service every 10k , so people deciding to change oil etc earlier are just being very conscious of their cars, and trying to maintain them at an optimum level?

Bit of a stretch if you don't bother getting your Mum to service her car for 120k miles, but some people are very exacting and like to keep their cars in good shape.

I keep track of required changes for my car like spark plugs and their intervals, and warn my mechanic they are due

Different strokes for different folks I guess :) Also depends on how you view your car, someone who simply sees it as a mechanism to get from a to b will have a very different view than someone who is a real enthusiast, uses their car to chill out, etc

That's exactly it. As long as my mother gets to and home from town she doesn't give a hoot. But I myself are completely different. Chalk and cheese and all that. :)

Why wouldn't you help her out though?

My OH is one of those men that couldn't give a crap about cars, as long as it looks ok, and meets his needs, that's it.

I drive it regularly (we aren't fussy about who drives which car) and regularly have a chat with our mechanic to get it serviced, deal with any issues etc. It's next service our mechanic has asked me to write out a list of problems with it, and the OH is perfectly happy with that as it means he doesn't have to worry about something he is not interested in, and he knows I'll list every single issue I think there is with the car. I want my OH to have a safe and well serviced car, he has children and travels a bit, and I use his car a bit, so I invest a small bit of time in making sure it is ok.

Surely you'd do the same for your mother?

Last time the OH wanted to buy a car, he gave me a list of his requirements, and literally ended up driving the car, and handing over the cash after I'd done the legwork and narrowed it down to two choices.

On the flip side, he's great at making sure the cars are clean, washed, vacuumed and have the right oil and coolant.

Called being an adult and contributing a little, using your skills, and help from others to help someone you are close to.

Change the oil on that yaris and persuade her to get it in for a decent service, the filters must be screaming.

I might laugh and take the mick out of my OH when we are all at the mechanics and he comes out with silly statements that make me and the mechanic roll our eyes, but he's a great guy, minds me, minds my car as best he can, so I help him out by dealing with stuff he doesn't have any interest in. He's good to me by making sure the checks that are needed are done and the car is in good nick inside and out in terms of cleanliness

All just a bit of give and take :)

    North Dublin.

Swords to Naul to Balbriggan and back avoiding the motorways

Very nice, ****ty roads to test you and just relaxing to do the drive.

Drive into Swords, follow the signs for Ashbourne then divert to Naul.

I remember the one time I was in sligo they had no road markings

Took me ages to get to civilisation.

You spun out to Bohernabreena before? There're some nice roads up that direction, some covered in tyre marks. ;)
Some aweful muck too though, the road from Brittas (off N81) to Bohernabreena has some great moments.

Edit: Your banhammer seems to be broken, SG. :p

Ah jesus, seriously get her car looked at, she has destroyed it potentially, you will get so much good advice here.

Take the time and do it. It's not a case of minutes, first time you change oil it will take at least two hours.

What do you do if you don't mind me asking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,728 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

    Two hours?
Jesus, I think my oil was changed with the car back on the ground in 20 minutes.
That was on a lift though.

Got as far as putting the timing belt back on the race car tonight after rebuilding the head, turns out I had the wrong timing belt on the shelf so have to wait until Monday to order one from Honda d'oh!!

Need to buy a compression tester anyway and collect my new distributor so it would have killed me having it sitting ready to fire apart from one component.
