Do the flash carts need a parallel or serial port? I'm sure I have a USB to Serial adapter knocking around somewhere that I used to load maps onto and off of my trusty old etrex vista GPS.

That could be a better idea :o

If Sir Bob is talking about the Tototek ones I traded him, then the programmers need a native parallel port :(

My Vecflash is one of the early models and it requires a serial port, use one of the usb to serial adaptors and it works a treat, thanks Kerbdog!

If only that were the case for the Toto's, those programmers are damned fussy re protocols etc

Not Retro but it looks like Sony are having another crack at building a home console that won't self destruct!
So we all here at A&R say "Good luck Sony, we're rooting for you, third times a charm!"

Is that a slim version or something? Reminds me of a George Foreman Grill:

It's the new PS3 and yet it costs more than the last slim PS3.
The only advantage is it can cook enough chicken at once to feed a family of 4 and do so with no added fat!

The €199 model seems to have a measly 12GB flash storage & no hdd. I don't think you could cut a current gen console down much more!

Same here. Afraid to turn the thing on lest it dies on me though. :(

I'm the exact same, I turn it on with one eye closed & the other heavily squinted. I'd consider every other console in my collection more reliable, & I've stuff as far back as the Veccie.

Played the Resident Evil 6 demo last night. I recommend not getting your hopes up.

Didn't Capcom say a while ago they were keeping the series more action based, than survival horror? This was never going to end well

I don't necessarily mind the action slant - Resi 4 is, after all, one of the greatest action games ever made. But this... they've tried to please everyone, and the resulting half hour demo is an absolute mess. Expectations have gone way down.

I don't mind an action slant either, but Resident Evil made its name as an all out survival horror game & later genre. Since 4, I think it's been chasing its own tail, going the wrong way every time.

Now with the mindless success of the likes of CoD & its army of clones, RE has been diluted, & pillaged of all its worth. If they simply returned to it roots, forget about the grand scale of things, give us a few characters, a spooky location & some isolation, intuitive controls, no auto-aim, & some genuine horror...I think they might get back on track

I still think 4 was the best move the series could have made - as fond as our memories of old school Resi are, the gameplay and design is antiquated in several ways. Resi 4 evolved the survival horror aspect of the game significantly, making something that felt fresh and invigorating while remaining relatively loyal to the tone and (nonsensical) lore of the series.

But while at the time it gave the series the boot in the arse it needed, the biggest problem is it raised the bar restrictively high, especially since Mikami - one of gaming's true geniuses - jumped ship. Resi 5 tried to ape its predecessor without quite understanding it. This new entry appears to at least try to mix it up again, but the resulting cocktail ain't pretty.

Yeah a RE game where aiming is actually hard would be the right stuff.

If RE6 tanks, and lets be honest, its not looking too bright for it. Will the series finally be put down? Or will capcom finally realise people dont play RE for mowing down dozens of zombies

Plus I'm actually surprised that the RE films havnt had their own spin off game at the stage, seems like something that would have been cranked out for a quick buck

Oh, the aiming in Resi 6 is actually hard, but in an annoying sort of way. The red dot in the crosshair unaligns everytime you should meaning you just start missing randomly. It's not exactly elegant, and simply means that punching the enemies is easier and less irritating.

Also going to the press screening of the new Resident Evil film next week. Haven't seen one since the abysmal first. I look forward to hating it.

Quite true, but they were survival horror games. Its a totally different genre now, & its a genre that RE has never quite been good, or even worked properly at. Yes 4 was a departure, but as you said, it remained loyal to its predecessors while still bringing something new. Since then however, it's all gone to pot.

    I say a return to roots, not in a literal, clunky sense. But at least return to survival horror, it is after all, what it was good at {before all the mindless nonsensical lore took over}

So it will be shot to the leg, run up and press X for special move?

For some reason I thought you said premier, which broke me out in a cold sweat, because I would love to touch Milla Jovovichs head

    tumblr_m8kqulPefX1r4ibado4_250.jpg

I'll still get RE6 regardless because I've followed the series till this point so I want to see what happens now

RE tanked and thank god Dead Space came along..... of course it only needed one sequel to find itself wandering off the one true horror path.
Looks like scary game fans are having to mine jap horror games and indie releases for their jumps.
I think I was disgusted more by Limbo than by DS2.

It always disappoints me that Dead Space 2 got such good reviews - such a disappointingly bland game after the proudly derivative and pulpy thrills of the first :(

Amnesia and Slender have been the true recent successors to the survival horror genre alright - the latter especially proving that less really can be more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭Jack burton

And dead space 3 having a co-op mode is just more nails in the coffin

I still havnt played Amnesia, I must install it on steam and play it. Got it in a bundle last year and just havnt gotten around to it.

This life of mine just gets in the way of playing games!

Scary games reached a pinnacle for me with the fact I spent €50 on BF3 and it lasted 4 hours!

I liked Dead Space 1 but it wasn't a patch on Resi 4 which it was imitating like crazy as well ad a few System Shock 2 elements. I must play the second game to see how disappointing it is. I think there's a chance Dead Space was originally being developed as a System Shock game since Redwood studios were rumoured to be making the game before Dead Space and EA renewed the IP around that time.

I was enjoying Dead Space until the turret section and then I gave up.

Why the hell do so many games feel the need to include fecking turret sections?

Was really stupid in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. You're literally a walking tank and yet for some reason you have to keep stopping to use a bloody immobile turret!

Yeah the turret section was pretty bad although you didn't miss much after that. It's just more of the same a way too many monster closets.
