Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You might be lucky and find one in your local Aldi. They were on special awhile back however my local Aldi still had a couple last week... others here have also mentioned that they have seen a few left in their local Aldi

Aldi had them on saturday in dublin, and also hexi tabs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 326 ✭✭evilmonkee

Aldi in Santry had hexi stoves reduced to €1.99 yesterday evening, plently left.
Hexi tablets reduced to 99c but none left in Santry*

*probably for the best or the OH would be asking why an entire press was filled with them :D

Those hexi tabs shown in the youtube clip are known to spit and spark after being stored for a long time

I know what you mean with regards the quality of stuff in there.

I got some combats in the early 1990's that are still going strong.

The esbit ones i have are in packs of 2 and air tight sealed i used some a couple of weeks ago and their after been stored for about 3 years they were fine no problem with them at all as good as the day i bought them cant say the same for the ones that came with the hexi they sweat in the plasic they came in and spit out a few times but they will come in handy for fire lighters :p

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,956 ✭✭✭Doc Ruby

Firelighters work great in the hexi stoves too, and are a good bit cheaper.

I've had a box of Dunnes stores finest sealed up in a ziploc bag for the last two years, they seem to work fine so far. Some of the flammables evaporate if you leave them exposed for too long, but the bag prevents that.

I've used the BBQ firelighters, worked fine.
They're reduced to 99c in my local tesco atm. They store for years.. Also, useful for the BBQ :D as we don't have an open fire (unfortunately)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Dawn Rider

    Yes I did

On the site it say's the 2nd hand bivi's are out of stock. But, it's worth ringing them to check.

The Grade 1 section is the more expensive part
    http://www.the-outdoor.co.uk/

I got my Olive Drab Bivi in the Grade 2 section

The only thing wrong with it is a mud stain the size of a postage stamp... :)

I rang the company when I saw the 30 pound delivery charge and they corrected it.:D

Still comming up at 30 stg for me.
    I'll try again tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Dawn Rider

If you order on-line it does come up as 30 pounds. But, this is wrong. It's only 15 pounds. I said 7 by mistake earlier.

If you phone them they will give you the correct delivery charge.

When you place an online order, there should be a part where it says something like 'pay by phone'. Do this.
You will be given an order number on your confirmation e-mail.

When you ring the company, give them this number and ask 'are you sure it's 30 pounds delivery'?

I'll give you the name of the girl I've dealt with, on Monday, if you have any more problems.

With Military Mart in Liverpool I again phone them and say (nicely) that I want to order stuff but the delivery carges are putting me off. Is there another way.... maybe by standard post..?

They weigh the stuff there and then and will give you the new (better) price.

You can also to see if it's worth your while by checking the Royal Mail website.

    Hope this helps.

Due to the plastic bottles it comes in

Hehe water will always stagnate if it ain't moving. But the big kinda buzz around bottled water now is that if its left in the bottles for such long periods of time it actually starts to leach stuff from the plastic its contained in.

"That's not to say that bottled water is absolutely free of contaminants, nor that chemical leaching never takes place. Studies done on water bottled in FDA-approved polyethylene terephthalate (PET), for example, did find trace amounts of potentially hazardous substances believed to have migrated from the plastic"

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,956 ✭✭✭Doc Ruby

Ah water if its kept in a dark environment with a few drops of chlorine in will hold forever. True enough about the plastic leaching though, I keep mine in a couple of food grade barrels.

Years of experience cooking with gas, petrol and hexitabs (occasionally). Never had a dirty exterior with those fuels, tbh.

Agee that dirty pots are not an issue in a survival scenario. :)

Transparent plastic, like PET and Nalgene, can leach toxins over time. Solid (thick walled to prevent microscopic fractures which increase the chances of leaching) plastic food grade stuff doesn't.

You should look down the chimney of a Kelly Kettle after a season of pine burning, you could use it to re-tarmac your driveway. :D The great outdoors are a messy place though, better to embrace it and have a hot cuppa than run out of fuel miles from anywhere.
