Con's. Requirement to work some unsocial hours (evenings+Saturdays)
with no extra payment for same.
Out of interest, how late in the evenings? I just want to see is the reality diffrent from what was advertised to us.

Hi I have enquired about this re the days we will be working and the hours required of us - It will depend on what prison you are appointed to - but in general it will be office hours!

You are correct. In general it will be office hours, but there will be requirement to do the some late evenings and the odd Saturday depending on which prison you work in.
Offenders are not committed to prisons during office hours only!

Just a little bit of advice for the first year or 2 all will seem fine and you will be on more or less office duties and a few other minor posts but things could change and you will be told it was in the circular for example the wording support duties
covers them to put you in nearly every post in the jail. Also they could try to change your working times and days in the future. The statement is just my own opinion though.

Bring it on ive worked shift work for the last 8 years in a goverment dept. so I think the hours in the prison will be a welcome change compared to what I have been doing and of course im well away the "prisoners dont do office hours" Saturday & Sunday work dont bother me im sure like alot of other people who applied for these positions!

I was in group 2 but i think i'm being pushed back to group 3 !

I'm outside Dublin as well !

I was top 40 on the order of merit and top 15 on the 1st preference list for my location.

I know that letters of acceptance are going out this week and that Public Appointments have been in touch with me to ask what dept i'm in so the PS can contact them.

Info is slow coming through but two 2 people who are doing all the work on this and they are dealing with about 20 lists !

I'd just love to know if i'm being offered a position or not, even if it wasn't for 2 months or more !

Unless i get one of my top 2 i won't get taking it !

Has anybody who's supposed to be in group 1 recieve their letters for training yet? If they haven't and their start date is still the same, that would mean only 2 weeks notice.

Indeed and don't you have to give 2 weeks notice ?

I was talking to one of the team involved in the recruitment today and they said that they were sending letters to our HR depts today informing them of the moves to take staff and requesting files...........

Yes 2 weeks would be the norm, but myself and a few others got told we would get 3 weeks notice, I guess that's changed!

I didn't realise they were going to our HR's:eek: I told my HEO months ago I was going for the competion but nothing since, may inform them tomorrow!

Is the penny starting to drop yet lads?

Forget the norm and standard practise, this is the IPS. Things like 2 weeks notice and such formalities are a thing of the past. Look back through the PO recruitment thread and have a glance. There is every chance that you could get a call on Friday evening telling you that you are starting in Beladd on Monday morning.

The PO's on this site have been telling you along that you are dealing with a completely different beast in the prison service, but some of you think that we are either lying or that because you are existing PS that you already know the score.

Welcome aboard the good ship IPS and I really look forward to reading this thread around Xmas time when you have a few months under the belt and the reality of the conditions hits home.

Good luck to everyone starting in the next few months.......

But even with all the negatives i'd go from a 20 hr a week commute to 2 hrs:)

I've never once thought any of the PO's who answered on this thread have been lying. I've read the PO post in full and I actually was going to put in my last post some people get told on a Friday evening!

I think the majority of us are grateful to any PO's that have given advice, information and answered questions for us. I can only speak for myself but as far as I'm concerned I do not think I know everything, but I hope I'll learn and be a decent member of staff.

Just spoke to IPS and have been told i might or might not be called in the 3rd or 4rd group. It all depends on which prisons they have involved in them:(

So i still sit here not knowing if i have a position in my 1st choice or not.

Just to let other know this is what i was told as well

"Any contact about taking in the 3rd or 4th classes will be done with yourself (using the contact details you have supplied) and your HR Dept"

So from that i take it your home dept will tell you when training starts, if it starts ????????

Has anyone gotten any paperwork today? A friend was offered his first choice/ Portlaoise.

He was told he would be provisionally starting on the 10th and if not 3 weeks afterwards.

Tried calling numerous times. They don't seem to have any idea what is going on in there.

Very frustrating as if it was a private position it would be made available and filled without anyone dragging there heels.
