That is incorrect. You are liable for duty on the card. You may walk through customs without being challenged or you may not.

I've gone through a total of four airports on two separate occasions with a case full of components, and no-one batted an eye.

They're not going to bother with you most of the time when you have components in your luggage.

And worst comes to worst, I'll have to pay the same amount as it would've cost anyway.

Agreed. A friend once came home from New York with something like ~€1500 of undeclared sound equipment in his case and nothing was said.

Very True , if you fly to London on a stop over like so many people have then the Airport won't know you have been in America because they only know about the flight you are London to Dublin .

If you wanted to take the risk, removing the new card from its packaging (keeping on the anti-static bag) and popping it in your carry-on backpack would be fine.
Any challenges and you tell them you brought it over from Ireland with you. :D

Got a new tablet home like this.

Only found out the other day; Asus isn't pronounced like it's latin (circus maximus) but as if it's spelled "A-soos".

    Blew my mind.

Lol - A 24'' monitor is pretty conspicuous.

Re Asus: I've seen reviewers asking company reps about it a few times in reviews. I usually pronounce it Ace-us, as it sounds a bit better anyway. I don't think they care as long as they're recognised in some for and their stuff sells.

Gentlemen, any big developments on the hardware front in the next 6 months or so? ie new series of GPUs or CPUs released etc? Will be building a new gaming rig in November time, but if there was something exciting due in Feb/March for example I'd be more comfortable over Christmas if I had a couple of months extra to save. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Too early to say really. We might see a GK110 GPU some time early next year. If one did rear its head, it would completely obliterate a GTX 680, but whether it will show up or not is completely up for grabs at the moment.

There's always developments 6 months away, at the start of 2013 AMD should (rumour) be releasing their HD8000 series which is an improved version of their 28nm GCN stuff. Expect Nvidia to closely (loose term, they haven't even released all their cards yet) follow. Nvidia should be bringing "Big Kepler" to the discrete gaming GPU, AKA GK110. That's apparently a monster, but it's total speculation. For comparison, people argued that GK104 (GTX 680) was supposed to be the GTX 660 or something, but because AMD's cards weren't very good (?) they called it the GTX 680, and thus left GK110 out They then used the same chip for the rest of their current lineup.

Intel are releasing Haswell I think as well...

Hmmm interesting. Haswell could be as late as June, so don't know if I can wait that long...

Guess I'll just get saving and see what info we have come November. Thanks!

Is the pre applied thermal paste on a H100 any good or should i just apply new paste. If so is the Arctic Cooling MX-4 worth going with

    Hiya,

Lads any thoughts on this psu.

    thanks

It's a new PSU. Don't base PSU decisions on amazon reviews - always wait for the professional ones which test stability etc. No major reviews yet listed on the PSU review database. Best cheap PSUs to go for which are widely available are XFX, OCZ ZS/ZT and some of the Antecs.

Its very expensive at the moment. I'm really not sure it's great value atm unless you managed to get it sub €300 some where?

Hmm problem with my cc company flagging scan and komplett trannsactions, so nothing is paid for yet and orders cancelled afaik.
How soon if at any stage should prices drop?

I agree completely. The 7950 is currently cheaper and faster than the 660 TI. If Nvidia doesn't drop the price a bit, it's a no-brainer decision to go for the 7950. And then there is still the Radeon 7850 which covers the €200 market without current gen competition. I don't see Nvidia putting AMD in a hard place at all unless some prices are dropped.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,224 ✭✭✭Procrastastudy

I don't know but I;d give it about two weeks personally. I think there's just a bit of a new release furory.

Don't get me wrong that MSI power edition looks like the OC King of the 660ti cards - I think there are going to be some insane OCs out of that card. AMD cards also lack the killer feature of Adaptive vSync which would be a major factor in purchasing I have to admit.

Bottom line - if that MSI card was around €275 I would have thought twice about the 7950 - probably would have bought the 7950 because of the res I run but at 1080p - quite a tough decision if the pricing was right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,911 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Hmmm I don't really want to see a new gen of cards, I would like to see better pricing instead.
Let's have a look. A single 7970 or 680 can destroy any game on the market at 1080p. That is a lot of horse power there.
Mid range cards are not that far away from it. Maxing out 1080p games is just piss easy. The only game that gives a bit of hassle to mid range is bf3.
No point in new gen cards as these cards are way better then graphic quality.
Green and red need to take their heads out of the arse and look in to pricing.

*i shouldn't really care as I got a powerful gpu already, though with lower price of hardware pc gaming will become eve more affordable and developers will see pc as even better platform.

Anybody know what the best card for under €220 is? I am looking to order today and need it by the end of next week. I did get a 7850 from pixmania for that price, however it was faulty and there is not a chance in hell I am going to order off them again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,979 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

    you're looking for a cheap HD7850.

hardwareversand.de will do a few for €220 delivered, but you might be better off getting it somewhere else with less shipping.

what do you reckon of the club3D royalqueen card? I know 1GB of Vram is sufficient for 1920x1080p gaming however will it be able to run some of the HD texture packs for skyrim (for example)

I think it'd struggle with high res packs to be honest. I'd go for a 2GB if possible.

(Beans on toast for a week will taste sweet if you eat them infront of the PC) :D
