Lads, i held out on a new pc for ivy bridge (only about 2 weeks:pac:) and now im looking to piece it together. I need a small form case. Which of these do you prefer?

    Silverstone SST-TJ08E USB3.0 PC Case

Fractal Design Define Mini Series Micro ATX Case - Black Pearl

    thanks

I like the silverstone one, but I prefer the model of it that has no mesh.

    thanks

Thats the silverstone with the MB orientated upside down. Im not sure if this makes any cooling difference but I have seen good reviews for this case.

Silverstone would be a better build quality than the Fractal and personally would always choose silverstone

I wouldn't open up my PC just to do that, whenever I'm doing something inside the case and I think it needs a clean, I do it then, normally every 3-4 months.

I would spend the first hour of a game messing around with the settings trying to get everything just right..

Maybe they mean that people just got with default levels (high, medium, low, etc.) and don't change individual settings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭Connavar

Everything goes to ultra straight away for me and then they are dropped down as necessary.

Don't think any of the pc gamers I know wont fiddle with the settings to some extent

Thats the only way that this stat might make sense to me

I set my config for css to read only years ago and still have to set about 10 things every time i start it up in console. no idea why I don't change it in my config but that seems like it would be too much effort

    heres that video:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/video/geforce-lan-nvidia/729742

that whole new optimising crap is bad news. it iwll be optional now, but i bet it will be just standart later. remember RAGE? the only thing you can change in it - reolution and AA.

PC gamers want more options to play with, not less! crysis 2 was good example how to piss off pc gamers. each of us, have prefered settings. for example i always drop AA down, even if game already goes 60fps++. i just dont like AA. same as smeone likes AA, but will drop high lightning or shadows etc... this is why we love pc gaming, because we have options...

thanks lads, Im gonna go with the silverstone - especially since I got a reply from Fractal earlier saying their measurements dont include the feet so the Define Mini is about 1cm to tall for the compartment in my desk:D
The SST-TJ08E looks good, i was watching oc3d on youtube and it got a gold rating. The motherboard is flat on a removable tray if I remember correctly as the heatsink was between the harddrive bay (which i dont need) and the backside. That mesh on the front is hiding a 180mm intake fan. Looks perfect for me really although 7 months ago it was £79 and now its gone up to £87:D

edit: oh your right the motherboard is upside down, the panel comes off on the other side and you need to drop the psu in from above :D

Right, I'm looking at upgrading my case fans in my Carbide 400r as they are a bit loud. Silence is golden here, but I still want respectable performance at a nice price. I was looking at the Bitfenix Spectre over at specialtech. Any thoughts?
They seem to be the best value as I am ordering a few other bits off them at the moment. I know the Noctua 120mm fans are good but they seem a bit pricey.

I've heard Scythe Slipstreams recommended a lot for case fans. You could also look into Gentle Typhoons. They're more for radiators, but you won't really loose anything by using them as case fans either.

Thanks for that, they seem quite good. I'll have to look at this further, I had decided on the Spectres as the review over at Overclock3D seemed very positive.

I bought the Nexus Real Silent 120mm based on their use as reference fans on Silent PC Review.

    http://www.quietpc.com/products/120mmfans/nx-120-basic

Cheaper and quieter than my Slipstream from what I can tell.

lads would there be much difference between
    Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 UDIMM 240 Pin Memory Module Kit

    and
    8GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz CL9

I just ordered the latter as part of my new ivy build and just want someone to say something like "the difference is so small you wouldnt notice it" ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,690 ✭✭✭✭Skylinehead

The difference probably doesn't exist :p

Anyone seen this mechanical keyboard before: http://www.coolermaster.co.uk/product.php?product_id=6815

I like the look of it, has backlit kets, choice of Black, Brown, Blue, or Red keys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

It looks very nice, except the backlights are red/orange for some reason. I'd considered this one as well when I was looking around.

Further off-topic: It'd be nice if someone made a backlit keyboard that was green (I know there is one; it's US layout). Dunno about everyone else, but I like green lighting.

So I decided to go against the LG monitor after reading some reviews. I saw this monitor mentioned a few times here before. What is your option on it?

I used to own it. it's a very nice screen, but I don't think its worth €175. I paid 115 due to a miss price, but I'd value it nearer the 150e monitors I've tested.

at that price you're close to the Dell u2312hm, which is very nice.

The dell u2312 looks nice however I noticed that it does have a 8ms response time which would equate to ghosting and thus be bad for first person shooter type games, no? Do you have that monitor yourself?

Thanks for that. I just had a look at this review and seems to definitely be a bargain. Its also surprising to see how much cheaper komplett is to other online retailers for this monitor :D

I actually ordered the other mechanical keyboard they got
    http://www.coolermaster.co.uk/product.php?product_id=6817
from scan.co.uk. Just ordered it thursday so hopefully have it in a day or two.
I was talking to a guy from scan the day before I ordered on the phone who was really sound and helpful and said the order would be only £2.50 (cos of avforum loyalty programme).
The next day I rag back and the guy who answered the phone was very unhelpful and disinterested and ended up charging me £6-7 for delivery. Dont think I;ll be shopping there again
