Hey gaeilgegrinds1, i'm just wondering if you could give me a little bit of advice re: the orals. I do Ordinary Level, and if i'm to be honest, really dislike Irish. Would you be able to give me any sort of list/indication as to what is essential for someone sitting Ordinary Level should prepare? My Teacher is extremely unhelpful, and slightly annoyed at the fact she is teaching Pass and so has bombarded us with Higher Level standard notes that are difficult to understand! Thanks a million for any advice in advance! :)

We don't know what level ye are so there's nothing specific for each level. Revise verbs in the past, present and future and some phrases. Also prepare a few topics really well and make sure you get to talk about them.

My Irish teacher is one of the top examiners in the country and for the general conversation he has only covered 7 topics with us:

    -Mé féin & M'áit cónaithe
    -An Scoil
-An tslí beatha ba mhaith liom
    -An samhradh
    -Caitheamh Aimsire
    -Taisteal
    -An Gaeilge

..He hasn't covered like anything topical (social problems, etc) and that's kind of worrying me? Should i do some independent topics myself?

We were told to keep it to basic topics this year. My class are mentioning social problems if asked about their area. Also recession if asked about jobs, employment or after the LC. Nothing else too topical covered by us either. You've only 6 mins, you've loads to say no doubt.
And I'd love to know if I know him, we're a tight-knit bunch!

I did notice how basic my topics were - do you think its possible to still get a high mark? I answered them all well and accurately, just a bit shocked at how basic it was  I would have tried to steer the conversation a bit but it was like getting blood from a stone, she seemed to have in her head exactly what to ask, cut across me etc, so I couldnt

From what I experienced, nothing too complex was asked. The examiner seemed content to leave me talk about what I wanted for as long as was some way reasonable. However I have heard some horror stories from other schools, namely questions regarding how you would feel if you were in the sinking Titanic etc. However I do not intend to fear monger, what you say I find to be almost universally true. The examiners seem to be going out to make it as painless as possible

It seems that you are right they are trying to keep it simple and ask easy topics. That seemed to be the case for the people in my school who did it on Monday and Tuesday. However,I am on tomorrow and have a different examiner..Hopefully be ok :/

Just out of curiosity is anyone here fluent in Irish? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭seriouslysweet

Yep, táim líofa i nGaeilge. Ní as an Gaeltacht mé agus níor rugadh nár tógadh mé sa tír seo ach tá neart teangacha ag mo thuistí, Gaeilge san áireamh.

Go hiontach, táim líofa i nGaeilge chomh maith, ach fós táim buartha faoin béaltriail!!
(great, i'm also fluent in Irish, but i'm still worried about the orals!!)

Conas go bhfuil tú buartha?! Tá seans mhaith go mbeidh Gaeilge níos fearr agat ná mar atá ag an scrúdaitheoir!

Táim buartha mar labraím i 'slang' gaeilge don chuid is mo is níl mo modh conníollach ar eolas go maith agam! Táim ag súil le haghaidh an A1..

(I'm worried because mainly in 'slang' irish and my conditional tense isn't too well off. I'm hoping for the A1)

Is cuma leo faoi, 'slang,' mar ciallaíonn sé sin go bhfuil eolas maith agat faoin teanga. Sin mo thuairim! Is féidir leat A a fháil gan an Modh C, beidh sé togha.

Anyone done their oral, what were the 'difficult' topics like? Like cúlú eacnamaiochta, gaeltacht, alcól... rudaí mar sin! Agus conas a bhí an ceist don 'modh coinníollach'?

Edit: Any good sites with phrases/topics prepared for oral? My book isn't the best :pac:

Chuir an scrúdaitheoir an ceist orm, 'cad a dhéanfá i rith an tsamhraidh dá mbéafá i do mhuniteoir scoile?'

Hi it went fine :D The only thing I am disappointed with is the pictures because I was so nervous at that point and dont know how I did :/
But the questions I got asked were so nice! Just basic stuff like family, what would you like to do after school, passtimes and I think the onyl question slightly difficult was she asked"Cad a cheapann tu faoin an Tir seo?"

Advice: Honestly dont worry because by the time I started the general convo my nerves went ou the window and was so happy :D

Had my oral today, it went ok. Was most worried about the sraiths before I went in but I got "Cursa Gaeilge sa Ghaeltacht" so I was happy enough with that. But did anyone else feel like the questions they were asked were really basic? I do HL myself and I'm really hoping for an A1, my teacher reckons I'll get it, but other people were coming out saying they were asked the modh coinniolach and about the culu eacnamaiochta and everything, but all I was asked was fairly basic stuff - what I want to do next year, my family, sport, what I'll do the summer, what I did last summer, where I live etc, although she kept cutting me off quite frequently with different questions also. Since it was so basic does anyone know if that will lower my grade? I'm a bit worried

I doubt it'll lower your grade, I'd say it's a sign that things were going well and you had plenty to save for the simple things! :)
