    Wasting Away

The film has your typical zombie setup; a military medical experiment to create super soldiers using chemicals goes wrong and, while trying to hide the evidence, a barrel of said chemicals ends being lost. A group of teenagers unwittingly eat said chemicals and become zombies. The twist in the tale though is that the story is told from the teenagers perspective and don’t know that they are zombies but think they are super soldiers instead. After finding out the truth, they must avoid military capture with the goal of uniting zombies everywhere to leave in peace separate from the human population.

There is no denying that Wasting Away is a silly film; straight from the off the humour is reasonably low brow and the various characters are not exactly intelligent but this is why the film works so well. It’s very much a lighthearted comedy zombie film that remains funny right until the end. It’s very well written and directed by Kohnen on such a miniscule budget, the use of black and white and colour scenes to differentiate between the points of view works excellently and it has to be said that Wasting Away really is a unique film. This is by no means a gore film but all the effects that do exist look excellent with the vast majority being practical effects. The story is very good, admittedly it take a little time to get going and the main characters are a bit annoying at the start but once Colby French shows up as Soldier Nick Steele it really gets going and all comes together into a nice ending.

Wasting Away really is a very good low budget B-Movie with a unique twist on the zombie genre. Sadly it has come in completely under the radar but if you have chance the definitely check it out, hopefully you won’t be disappointed.

    Paranormal Activity 2

The plot is almost identical to the original film; a family begins to suspect that their house may be haunted due to a number of strange noises and happenings around the house. They install a number of CCTV cameras that capture everything that happens in the house and the ultimate demise of the family.

If you enjoyed the original film then you will enjoy the sequel because every technique and scare tactic used the first film is present in this one. If you are like me though and found the first film to be completely un-frightening then there is nothing here that’s going scare you. The only difference between the two is the amount of filler present in this sequel; it just takes far too long to get going leading to an incredibly boring opening 40 minutes that documents the mundane activities of an American family. When the so called frightening bits start it amounts to the odd noise and a few doors opening and closing by themselves. The ending is incredibly predictable and a little stupid, again almost identical to the original.

There is no doubting the popularity of these films, there is clearly a large amount of people that find them entertaining. It really depends on whether or not you can buy into the story and make yourself believe what you are seeing is real. For me both Paranormal Activity films fail to do this end up being rather boring and silly.

The Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010)

The plot is silly in the extreme; a vampire DJ and his followers are holding rave parties around the country and handing drugs that turn the takers into vampires. Edgar Frog is struggling to deal with the death of his brother so when a woman named Gwen turns up and tells him her brother has been kidnapped b said DJ who may the head vampire, Frog takes some convincing to help out. With help of his friend Zoe and a reality TV animal fighter, it’s up to Frog to try and save the world from the vampire threat.

What made the 80’s film so much fun was just how cheesy and light hearted it all was with a great array of characters and a wonderful 80’s soundtrack. The first sequel had none of these attributes and neither does this one. The acting is awful, not least from Feldman who seems to be content to grunt his way through the film. The plot is unoriginal and un-engaging with an obvious twist but the real problem with the film is the complete lack of fun. The story takes far too long to get going, once the action starts it is vaguely entertaining with some nice effects but the previous 60 minutes will almost certainly have bored you to the point of not caring. There is very little comedy and no chemistry between the cast, just why Feldman thought this film would rectify the wrongs of the first sequel I will never know.

It’s not as bad as The Tribe but that’s not saying much, it’s entertaining is parts but is mostly boring for the majority of meager 81 minute run time. Let’s hope that Feldman finally realises that he can never replicate the feel and quality of the original.

    The Rage (2007)

The plot is reminiscent of countless low budget films and the perfect setup for gore galore; a crazed scientist has become disillusioned with the capitalistic world and takes it upon himself to create a virus that forces which mutates it’s host into a deformed killer with an insatiable rage. After one of his victims breaks free, he goes on a killing spree eventually spreading the virus to a flock of birds that develop a penchant for human flesh. Said birds take an interest in a group of teenagers who must desperately try to stay alive.

The Rage is very reminiscent of 80’s splatter films such as Re-Animator, the only difference being the completely ludicrous plot, downright awful acting and rubbish CGI effects that exist in Kurtzman’s film. As it’s a splatter comedy horror B-Movie, these usually negative elements actually help to make The Rage a fun watch as you can’t help but laugh your way through this utterly silly film. The practical gore effects are excellent from Kurtzman with buckets of blood and gore on show, it’s just a pity that the CGI birds were so downright awful. The acting is terrible from all involved, the group of teenagers have to be one of the worst group of actors ever assembled but again this only adds to the fun of the film. In all seriousness there is nothing good about The Rage other than the excellent practical gore effects but if you start to watch it knowing how silly it all is there is no doubting that you will have a smile on your face from start to finish.

If you’re looking for a B-Movie full of blood and guts and one that’s utterly silly right the way through then you can’t go wrong with The Rage. Kurtzman has created a film that’s best described using two words; entertaining rubbish.

    Chain Letter (2010)

The main plotline is simple but rife for bloody horror fun; a manic with a penchant for chains has created a chain letter that has one simple rule, pass it letter onto five different people or you will die. Needless to say most of our teenage cast fails to do so and end being killed with a chain being used somehow in the killing. It’s up to the few remaining teenagers and a detective to figure out how to stop the killer before it’s too late.

There are two good things about this film; they are the premise and some good gore effects. Everything else is just bad. The problem mostly lies with the direction and the screenplay, Deon Taylor has somehow managed to make a film about a manic killing teens with a chain be a boring watch. It has a solid opening with an inventive scene involving someone being dragged by two cars and the setup is executed well but there is zero characterisation, far too many filler scenes and a serious lack of decent actors. The ending is quite good even if it is a little predictable but by that point you will have lost all interest as you will mostly likely be bored to tears. Chain Letter is proof that an interesting premise is only half the battle, being a good enough filmmaker to put that premise to good use is the much more important part.

Bar some interesting gore and a solid enough opening, there is very little to recommend about Deon Taylor’s Chain Letter. It’s a poor effort and you’re better off avoiding.

    Cursed (2005)

It seems as if there is a werewolf on the loose in L.A. which happens to attack a brother and sister after they are involved in a car crash. The two begin notice themselves changing, both physically and mentally, and eventually begin to suspect they might become werewolves themselves. The only way to stop this from happening is to kill the head werewolf; the problem is they have no idea who it is.

Let me get this out of the way first; it is extremely hard to label this film as horror because there is absolutely nothing frightening to be seen throughout its 97 minute runtime. More like a strange mix between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson’s Creek, it’s more a teenage drama film than anything else, and a bad one at that. Just how Wes Craven thought the script for Cursed was good enough to film I will never know. It’s painfully predictable throughout with the head vampire being completely obvious as soon as he steps on screen. The werewolves look absolutely terrible, both in CGI and practical effects form and are not menacing in the slightest. Craven decided to make this as a PG-13 film meaning there is no gore to be found here at all. Even with all these problems, I have to admit that it is still entertaining at times by providing plenty of goofy fun. Unfortunately the bad far outweighs the good though and Cursed ends up being another huge disappointment from Craven.

Silly fun at times but far too predictable with terrible effects and a lack of gore, Cursed plays out like a bad feature length episode of Buffy. It’s yet another poor effort from Craven.

    Hatchet 2 (2010)

Picking up from exactly where the first one finished, Hatchet 2 continues with the story of axe wielding deformed manic Victor Crowley and his terrorising of a Louisiana swamp. Mary Beth is the only surviving member of a tour group that entered the swamp, although she was looking for her lost brother and father. After talking with reverend Zombie, it seems as if her father was involved in the death of Crowley and the reason behind his rampage of the swamp. Zombie puts together a group of hunters to kill Crowley but of course he has an ulterior motive for doing so.

There is no doubting that this sequel is still fun and a nice throwback to the cheesy slasher films of the 80’s, it just doesn’t quite live up the original due to one reason in particular; there just isn’t enough of Victor Crowley. Green has put more effort into creating a back story for the character and it is very well done, the only problem is that it takes up far too much of the films running time and almost feels as if it’s filler to pad out the films length. Once the horror action gets going then it is great fun as Crowley hacks his way through the hunters in gory fashion with some great practical effects, imaginative kills and buckets of blood. It’s clear Green has a love for the slasher genre and knows how to make a fun film with nice throwbacks to the 80’s classics. There is a nice mix of characters with plenty of laughs with Tony Todd’s reverend Zombie being the standout. If more of the running time was devoted to the horror action segment than creating a back story for Crowley then this could have been excellent.

Not as good as the original due to too much story and not enough Crowley, it’s still a fun film and great gory fun when it gets going. The back story is good and there is plenty to be admired about the film, it’s still a little disappointing as it had the potential to be a lot better than it turned out to be.

    Psych 9 (2010)

A young woman takes a job working the night shift sorting old patient files in a closed down hospital. A serial killer is on the loose in the town and the woman begins to suspect her boyfriend of being the killer. She begins to have impromptu sessions with a psychologist working the night shift on the old psych ward and it quickly becomes apparent that the woman has a troubled past and all is not as it seems within the walls of the closed down hospital.

Honestly this film is a jumbled mess with the plot jumping from one nonsensical scene to another with the result being a film that is almost impossible to follow. Not only is the storyline a mess, the only attempt the director makes at frightening the audience is through cheap loud noise scares and the usual cliches that you can see coming a mile away. It’s clear that there was the potential for an interesting storyline here but the film tried to be a little too clever for its own good by being too ambiguous which all leads to an ending that is utterly baffling.

Psych 9 has a solid enough opening but poor writing, cheap scares and a nonsensical ending make this one that everyone should avoid.

I Spit On Your Grave (2010)

The plot is a simple one; Novelist Jennifer Hills rents a backwoods cabin in order to get some peace and quiet to write her next book. Unfortunately for her a group of men, including the local sheriff, have taken a liking to her and so break into her cabin, rape her and leave her for dead. A month later, Jennifer is back in the woods and decides to hand out her own unique form of retribution.

At least the 1978 film was trying to make a point about the brutality of rape; this remake has nothing new to say and is simply looking to cash in on the current trend of remaking classic horror films. Yes it’s a brutal film but seriously lacks the realism of the original due to the terribly contrived plot point of having the local sheriff in on the act. This simply wasn’t needed and proves the point that director Stephen R. Munroe really had no interest in making a social point with this remake. Where the film really falls apart though is in the second half as Jennifer is enacting her revenge as it’s nothing more than a bunch of gore set pieces shoddily put together with the intention to sicken the viewer. The film simply jumps from one character to the next as Jennifer offs them one by one with absolutely no story what so ever. The acting from Sarah Butler as Jennifer is very poor although this is just one other thing in a long list of problems. The effects are very good with the use of practical gore but the film is certainly not worth watching for this alone.

Pointless remake of an infamous film, there is really no need to watch this as it has nothing new to say.

    Bitter Feast (2010)

Peter Grey is a celebrity chef who has his own TV show and is head of an up market restaurant. It all starts to go wrong for him though when notorious food blogger JT Franks writes a scathing review of his food that leads to Grey’s TV show being axed and him losing his job at the restaurant. Grey doesn’t take this too well and he decides to kidnap Franks and make him endure various food related torture in order to get his own back.

In all honesty, the only thing that makes Bitter Feast stand out from the multitude of other revenge film is the concept, forcing your victim to cook food perfectly or to eat potentially dangerous food items to stay alive is certainly a unique one. It’s just a shame that the rest of the film is nothing new and in fact a little boring at times, particularly the second act. That being said, there is some nice effects work and the acting from the cast of unknowns is very good. Billed as horror film, I would be more likely to call it a thriller as there are no scares to be found here unless you consider the torture scenes to be chilling. The ending is a frustrating one, at one point it seemed as if Maggio was going to go against the usual Hollywood ending but instead he tacked on a final scene which made it a little more conventional. It’s a pity as this would have made the film stand out a little more.

In the end, Bitter Feast is a solid enough low budget direct to DVD film. It has an interesting concept and some good scenes but the many bad points prevent it from being memorable. It’s certainly worth a look though.

    The Resident (2010)

The plot tells the story of a young Manhattan doctor who finds what seems to be the perfect apartment, one with a great location and extremely cheap for its size. She slowly begins to realize though that her landlord might have ulterior motives for renting it so cheap as it begins to dawn in her that he has a seriously unhealthy obsession with her and will stop at nothing to get his woman.

There are many problems with The Resident with the main being just how derivative and unoriginal the plot is. There is nothing on show here that you haven’t seen before and done a lot better. The opening act is quite solid as it sets up the storyline but then we are treated to a ridiculously long and silly flashback scene at the start of the second act that was just not needed. In fact the entire midsection is extremely slow paced and borders on boring at times. It picks up again in the final act as our landlord finally completely loses the plot and the last 20 minutes or so are entertaining, it’s not enough to make up for what came before it. Sadly for a horror film, it’s entirely devoid of scares bar the odd uncomfortable scene so if you are looking for a frightening time this film isn’t for you. The cast is quite good with Jeffrey Dean Morgan putting in a good show as the landlord despite the poor script. As for why Christopher Lee’s character is included I’ll never know, he was utterly pointless to the plot.

The Resident is a poor enough film that’s mildly entertaining in the final 20 minutes but borderline boring for the rest. It’s very unoriginal and devoid of any scares; let’s hope that the next Hammer production will be better than this.

    Cropsey (2009)

Set around director Zeman’s home on Statten Island, New York, the documentary is based around the disappearances of five different children and the real life bogeyman who is accused of the crime. Cropsey was a term that the children of the island used for the bogeyman and with the disappearances of these children, Zemen and a number of his friends delve into the mysterious history and current practices on the island and the life of Andre Rand, the real Cropsey of the island.

Nearly every person has heard stories about various bogeymen while growing up but not many of us have the chance to make a film about said bogeyman. That’s exactly what the makers of Cropsey have done and it certainly makes for an interesting watch. It’s a very informative film that delves into the past of Statten Island including the tuberculosis hospital that was turned into a mental institution and how there are a number of people living in the surrounding woods that may or may not be past patients of the hospital. The story of Andre Rand is a disturbing one as the filmmakers show he was into some weird things and was a very messed up an. It is also an excellent film for documenting just how a legend is formed and somebody ends up becoming a new generation’s bogeyman.

Cropsey is both an informative and slightly disturbing documentary about a child killer and the birth of a bogeyman legend. It deserves more recognition than it has gotten and if you get the chance you should definitely give it a look.

The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is pure B-Movie fun; Jeff is ordinary guy stuck in a job he hates and living a boring life with his comic book loving mate. His life is turned upside though when an old man bursts into his house claiming that he is the last descendent of H.P. Lovecraft whose horror stories were not fiction but based on fact. He must protect one half of an ancient relic from falling into the hands of the Starspawn and his followers who are intent on reuniting the relic and resurrecting the Cthulu from the depths of the ocean.

This film is extremely silly from start to finish but it’s all the better for it due the fun way in which it’s filmed. Done on an extremely small budget, the cheap practical effects give it a real old school feel and also add to the comedy effect of the film. In fact the comedy element is probably its strongest feature as it is genuinely funny throughout due to some good writing and strong characters. The action is silly due to the budget constraints but is still fun and the story all comes together in a perfectly silly B-Movie ending that will leave you with a smile on your face.

The Last Lovecraft – Call of the Cthulu is an extremely cheap B-Movie that certainly won’t be to everyone’s tastes but if you sit back and enjoy the silliness of it all then there is plenty of fun and silly entertainment to be had here.

    Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The film’s title tells almost everything you need to know about the plot, the Mega Shark that defeated the giant octopus from the original film is still alive and kicking and wanting to kill a few more people. Another prehistoric animal has been accidentally released from a cave, a giant crocodile named Crocosaurus and it is also intent on killing as many people as it can. This leads our scientists and military personal with no choice but to get the two to fight each other to death.

The fact that I watched this film only a couple of days ago and have nearly forgotten every single aspect of it tells you all you need to know. Gone is the over the top ridiculousness of the original, this sequel is bafflingly played out in a much more serious tone. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still extremely silly but not in the good way. The effects are as terrible as usual, as is the acting and even the usually fun action scenes are mostly gone. It seems as if the formula for success that was the original film was stumbled upon by accident and they are unable to reproduce it.

Extremely disappointing sequel as it finally looked as if The Asylum were starting to make those silly over the top B-Movies that everyone loves. Very poor with very few redeeming features, this matchup is not even deserving of an under card spot.

    Rubber (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is just ludicrous; an inanimate car tire comes alive just outside a small desert town. The tire discovers that it has telepathic powers and begins to kill and destroy anything and everything in its path except one particular woman that it seems to become obsessed over. Meanwhile there is a group of people observing the “film” from afar by using binoculars to watch the tire on its rampage.

Yes you did read that right; this is primarily a film about a killer tire. It’s so silly that you would think that Rubber could only be a B-Movie but it’s anything but. I would have to classify it has an art house film due to how strange the plot is. Take the killer tire part and you are still left with group of people observing from distance with binoculars thinking they are watching a film and a cop that is trying to play along in order to entertain the audience. Really it’s impossible to explain it’s that strange, so strange in fact that how anyone could consider it entertaining is beyond me. There are plenty of good things about Rubber though, it has great effects and plenty of gore as the tire blows up plenty of heads. The cinematography is great and the plot is entertaining at times. In the end though it’s just too strange and the pace can be very slow with long drawn out shots of the tire rolling through the desert.

Rubber is a film I would never recommend to anyone because it’s just too weird but if you’re ever in the mood for an art house film about a killer tire then give it a go. It’s without doubt the best killer tire film I have ever seen.

    Dinocroc vs Supergator (2010)

Click to read on my blog

A government funded company that was tasked with developing a growth hormone to enhance food production and thus end world hunger has taken it upon themselves to use the hormone for more nefarious means. They have managed to create two huge animals, one a mix between a dinosaur and a crocodile and the other a giant alligator. This being a SyFy film, both animals escape and begin to chomp their way around a Hawaiian island. It’s up to a government agent, a conservation officer and a hunter to try and stop the marauding beasts.

I have started to believe that the SyFy channel simply don’t put any effort whatsoever into creating these films. Yet again the effects are diabolical but that’s not the issue. If they are going to make a film about two beasts fighting each other they could at least make said fight a little longer than three minutes long! In fact the titular creatures are so rarely on screen I was beginning to think that they had got lost. There is so little action to be found here which is a shame because the film is actually well acted for the most part and at least tries to explain the reasons for creating the creatures. In the end though, it’s another bore fest with too much talking and not enough silly action.

A film about two creatures squaring off should be fun but this is anything but as there simply isn’t enough creature action. Not even so bad it’s good; this fight ends up being another non event.

    The Horde (La Horde) (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The storyline is extremely simple; a group of cops storm a rundown apartment block with the intention of freeing their comrade who has been taking hostage by a group of gangsters. Said cops are thwarted by the gangsters though and held hostage themselves. That’s the least of their problems though as a there has just been a zombie outbreak and the apartment block seems to be attracting more than its fair share. The cops and the gangsters have to form and unlikely partnership in order to fight their way out of the building and hopefully survive through the night.

The zombie’s in this blood soaked French film are not your slow rambling along types, this zombies are fast and extremely strong which adds a whole new level of menace to the situation. Yes the story is simple and is reminiscent of Assault on Precinct 13 but it’s the perfect setup for plenty of mindless zombie action. The only problem is that the midsection of the film is surprisingly light on bloody action which is strange for a film of this type. It certainly picks up in the final act though as all hell is let loose with plenty of blood and gore. There are some nice characters to be seen here, particularly the wise cracking old war veteran whose weapon of choice is a Gatling gun. The final scene is also quite brave and not one you would likely see in a Hollywood film.

Le Horde does exactly what it says on the tin, it offers some great zombie action with nice effects and plenty of gore. Incredibly bland story aside, it’s an entertaining watch, particularly for zombie fans.

    Sharktopus (2010)

Click to read on my blog

Directed by Declan O’Brien whose biggest claim to fame is having helmed the third entry of the Wrong Turn series, the plot of Sharktopus has been done countless times before. Genetic engineers have managed to create a half shark half octopus hybrid for military purposes that they control using a device strapped to the creatures head. After it hits it’s head on the underneath of a boat, the device is broken leading the creature to roam free and kill every human it comes into contact with. It’s up to a genetic scientist and a bounty hunter to stop the rampaging creature from munching its way through the human populace.

I honestly believe that the SyFy company bigwigs have just one basic script that they use to make all of their films and simply fill in the blanks with whatever creature they have thought up this month. There is nothing new to be seen here and just why they insist on making these creature features as serious films I will never understand. Clearly there is scope to create a ridiculously over the top and fun B-Movie when your creature is a half shark half octopus hybrid but there are no laughs to be found here, not even unintentional ones. The kills are mostly unimaginative and consist of awfully rendered CGI blood splashing around onto rocks and walls. In fact the entire film’s effects are downright awful and look like something made on a commodore 64. Credit has to be given to Corman for coming up with an excellent creature design and something which is actually imaginative but the miniscule budget and the ineptness of the SyFy channels effects team have failed miserably to bring the creature to the screen. In all fairness, even if they had succeeded it still would have been a poor film that is far too similar to every other SyFy channel creature feature.

Roger Corman should just retire; he is way above creating creatures for the SyFy channel that are never going to be handled properly. Sharktopus is a film that could have been great fun of not taken seriously but unfortunately it’s full of terrible CGI, unimaginative kills and very little tension or entertainment. This film marks the beginning of the end for my viewing of SyFy channel creature features.

    Primal (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is one giant horror film cliché in itself and seriously lacks any ounce of originality; a group of friends join an anthropology student on an outing into the Australian wilderness to study an ancient rock painting. After a bout of skinny dipping in a waterhole, one of the group becomes sick eventually leading to her becoming extremely aggressive and hell bent on killing every member of the group. The group must make an extremely tough choice; kill their friend or risk being killed themselves. When another of the group begins to turn, the remaining members discover the real meaning behind the rock paintings they came to study.

There is nothing new or original about Primal, in fact you will have seen everything on show here in countless other films of the same type. What makes the film watchable is the production values and the bearable characters. Despite its low budget, the film still looks very well with some excellent practical gore effects. The plot moves along at a good pace and doesn’t take too long to get to the main horror part of the story. At only 80 minutes long it never allows boredom to creep in and knows not to overstay it’s welcome. Yes the story is silly and there is certainly nothing frightening about Primal but if your looking for a simple horror film to provide some light entertainment then you can do worse than this small Aussie effort.

Josh Reed has crafted a horror film that is the very definition of unoriginality but, despite this, it still manages to work even with its incredibly simple premise. It’s certainly a film for horror fans only but as direct to DVD films go you could do a lot worse.

The story focuses on a female newsreader that has a near fatal and strange encounter with a serial killer that is obsessed with her. In order to help her overcome her ordeal, her psychiatrist sends the newswomen to a rehabilitation retreat but it soon becomes apparent that her fellow inhabitants may not be what they seem and there may be an ulterior motive for her being sent to the retreat.

Director Joe Landis has managed to create a fun and entertaining film because despite it being primarily a horror film it never takes itself too seriously. Admittedly the basic premise is nothing new, a person being sent away only to a retreat only to find out the inhabitants are not quite human has been done countless times before but The Howling is so well written that it still manages to seem fresh. A lot of people forget that this film was released before its much more famous cousin An American Werewolf in London and was undoubtedly an inspiration for the special effects in that film. Obviously there was no CGI available at the time so the transformation scenes all had to be done using practical effects and they look great. Yes the werewolves themselves look a little hokey and not in slightest bit frightening but it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of the film. Perhaps the only real downside is that it takes a little while to get to the main storyline but once the werewolves start attacking it’s good old fashioned horror fun despite it not being frightening in the slightest.

The so called twist is painfully obvious and the storyline has been done to death but Joe Landis has made his film with a sense of fun which provides solid entertainment throughout.

    Monster Man (2003)

Click to read on my blog

Originality isn’t the strong point when it comes to the plot; two friends and a woman they picked up hitchhiking are terrorised by a disfigured and monstrous looking man driving a huge metal clad monster truck. That’s the entire plot explained in one sentence.

What the film lacks in originality it more than makes up for in entertainment value as it really is first class entertainment throughout its relatively short running time. Although the acting isn’t always of the highest caliber, there is a nice chemistry between the two male leads from the off with plenty of jokes that are actually quite funny. Monster Man wastes no time in letting you know that it’s a film not to be taken too seriously but instead to sit back and enjoy the ride. Once the monster truck shows up then it’s straight up comedy horror as the truck relentlessly pursues are three hapless people across the American desert. The truck itself looks excellent and suitably frightening and the effects throughout are very well done. The driving scenes all look great and although there isn’t an awful lot of gore, what little there is looks excellent. The pace of the film never lets up ensuring entertainment throughout and there are some excellent visual as well and as dialogue driven comedy. Yes the story is predictable and you will know what the outcome of the film is going to be but luckily Monster Man is great fun in reaching its predictable ending and is certainly one of the better “killer in a car” films of recent times.

Pure comedy horror fun, Monster Man is funny and entertaining throughout with some nice effects, good driving scenes and a very cool looking monster truck. It’s a shame that it’s not more well known as it deserves to be seen by more people. If you can get your hands on a copy then it’s definitely worth your time. Great fun.

    Infestation (2009)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is essentially no different from the countless other films of this type; a slacker named Cooper awakes in his office block to find himself covered in spider webbing. After breaking free, he comes to realise that the world has been taken over by giant insects everyone else in his office has suffered the same fate. Cooper takes it upon himself to awake a small rag tag group from their web induced coma and together they must fight for their survival.

The most surprising aspect of Infestation is how good the CGI effects are given the budget of the film, the insects all look believable and the film never suffers from ropey effects. Although the plot is as unoriginal as they come, the script itself is very well written with a good mix of characters that provide plenty of humour throughout. Although not every joke hits its mark, Infestation is still a funny film with most of the comedy coming from Cooper as the typical office slacker. Rankin knows that a film about giant insects can never be taken seriously so there is a sense of fun throughout the proceedings with a nice blend between the comedy and the insect action. The action scenes are solid enough although they are obviously restricted by the films budget but still remain entertaining throughout and it all leads up a well done, although predictable, climax. Although classified as a horror film, there is nothing even remotely frightening to be found here so if you’re looking for scares then Infestation isn’t for you but if good cheesy horror comedy is what you’re after then you can’t go wrong with this little film.

Writer/Director Kyle Rankin has crafted a genuinely funny comedy horror with solid CGI effects and decent action that provides solid entertainment throughout. Unfortunately it’s yet another film that not too many people know about but if you get the chance it’s definitely worth a watch.

    Rec 2 (2009)

Click to read on my blog

The sequel picks up exactly where the original film ended but this time the action follows a team of Spanish police as they are tasked with entering the building to escort in a medical officer and to search for survivors. They are almost immediately set upon by the infected inhabitants leading the loss of one of the team. After pressing the medical officer for answers it seems as if things are not as they seem and the cause of the infection is much more sinister than a simple infection.

The actual story behind the action of Rec 2 is very good as it ends up going in a completely unexpected direction. There is a much more complex film with many more plot points than the original that even brings in a supernatural element to the story. The problem lies with the films execution; to put it bluntly it plays out more like an action computer game than a film. Gone are frightening scenes of the original that have been replaced by countless action scenes that simply don’t work and are almost incomprehensible at times due to the overuse of shaky cam. The camera point of view shifts at various times from soldier to soldier which almost feels as if you are changing character in a first person shooter game. I really can’t stress enough how similar this looks to the countless zombie games that are flooding the market. Balagueró has actually managed to come up an interesting back story for the infection and if he focused on the slow building tension and scare tactics of the original then this sequel would have been every bit as good as the original. The final twenty minutes are excellent as the plot unfolds without the silly action scenes. Sadly it’s not enough though and we end up with a severely inferior sequel despite the good ideas.

Rec 2 is a huge disappointment that ends up feeling like you are watching someone play a computer game. It’s unfortunate as it has an interesting back story and some nice ideas but suffers from its execution. More of an action film than a horror; this comes no where near to matching the quality of the original.

    Fertile Ground (2011)

Part of the After Dark Originals series, Fertile Ground is unfortunately another mediocre entry in what has become a hugley disappointing first year for the Originals banner. It satrts quite well with an interesting set up, good acting and production values but quickly descends into a seen it all before ghost story that's predictable from start to finish and downright boring for most of the second half. The script is very poor with even the overuse of loud noises failing to make you jump even once. This one is better left unwatched I just hope that if After Dark decide to do the Originals series again next year that make sure to produce much better films that this.

    The Task (2010)

Another of the After Dark Originals releases, The Task is unfortunately on the same level as Fertile Ground, that is incredibly mediocre. The most annoying part is that it actually has the basis for an interesting a film; a group of people sign up to take part in a reality tv show where they must spend the night in an abandoned prison for the criminally insane and face their worst fears. The problem is with the script in that it's not frightening in the least, has almost zero gore and one a couple of silly twists at the end. With a better writer and a little more creativity it could have been a decent film but it ends up being one to avoid.

    Faces In The Crowd

Billed as a horror film, this is a painfully boring film at times that tells to story of a woman plsyed by Milla Jovivich who is suffering from a face blindness which is a condition that renders it impossible for her to recognise peoples faces. She got this condition after a run in with a serial killer who seems to want to finish off the job he started. The problem is that most of the first hour focuses entirely on the womans condition and it creeps along at an incredibly slow pace. The final half hour is as deriviative as they come as it plays out exactly the same as countless other serial killer films complete with a painfully obvious twist. It's no wonder Faces in the Crowd is getting horrible reviews as it really is a poor effort.

    Red State (2011)

Kevin Smith ventures into horror territory with his latest film Red State, a film which aims to to show just how crazy some of the evangelical Christian groups in America can be. Maybe not strictly a horror film, it tells the story of three kids being taken hostage by small fanatical religious group who plan to kill the boys because of their supposedly evil ways. What transpires is a Waco type siege incident and plenty of bloody carnage. It's certainly a brave film and succeeds quite well at showing just how crazy these groups are. The first two acts are also very entertaining and extremely well done but it's the final ten minutes or so that let the film down as it starys into unbelievable territory and loses alot of the credibility it has previously built up. Still it's certainly a good film with an interesting subject matter that's well worth a watch.

    Shark Zone (2003)

If there is any particular type of B-Movie that I love it's the shark attack film as you know that you are in for an utterly ridiculous film full of goofs and so bad they're good scenes. Shark Zone takes it to a new level of silliness though and you can't but laugh at how bad it all is. The plot is your typical shark plot, a small beach town community is overrun with sharks right before its annual festival. Through in some shady Russian diamond hunters and you have your story. The real fun though is had spotting the goofs, they range from countless stock footage being used over and over, divers speaking under water despite the fact their mouths don't move, a lost ship wreck that happens to be about 100 metres from the coast and near the surface, sharks that hunt in packs and roar as well as many more. There is no doubt that Shark Zone is an awful film but it's great fun with a few beers as you laugh your way through how silly it all is.

Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2 (2011)

The original Laid To Rest seemed to be well received by both horror critics and fans alike. Personally I felt it was average at best and lacked a good story to go along with the admittedly excellent gore effects. The exact same criticisms can be leveled at this sequel, yet again the practical effects are top notch but the plot just isn't interesting or engaging enough to hold your attention. We do find out a little more about Chromeskulls background and the fact he is part of a shady organisation but it's all to familiar which, just like the original, means this sequel is a big disappointment as it could have been so much better.

I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006)

The original two films in the I know What You Did Last Summer series were quite divisive, either you hate them or enjoyed the simple slasher fun that they offered. The majority of people have probably never even heard of this third entry in the franchise and those who have seen it tend to hate it. Yes it has a smaller budget and worse actors but it follows the exact same formula as the original two and despite it's many faults and blatant copying of the latter Friday the 13th sequels it still manages to provide some light slasher fun.

    The Woman (2011)

A sequel to the 2009 film Offspring, Lucky Mckee steps into the directors chair for this strange feminist film that has been the cause of a fair amount of controversy. Having never seen the original I can't comment on it's quality but The Woman is both an interesting and strange family drama about a clearly troubled man who finds a wild woman in the woods and takes it upon himself to civilise her. From this point on things get more and more weird until eventually crossing the line into madness. The opening 2 acts and very good with plenty of tension through the family but the final act strays much too far from reality and drags the rest of the film down. it's certainly worth a watch and you may enjoy the final act but for me it brought a very good film down to an average one.

    Wrong Turn 4

The law of diminishing returns has certainly rang true so far in the Wrong Turn series as each entry has been worse than the previous one. This prequel and fourth installment finally breaks the trend by at least being better than part 3 and it tries to offer something new by taking the action out of the backwoods and bringing it to an abandoned mental asylum where are deformed antagonists were holed up before escaping to the woods. Of course a group of early twenties decide to shelter from the storm inside the asylum allowing our deformed hillbillies to have some fun. It's not a good film but there are some nice gore scenes and if not taken too seriously it can be good slasher fun. Always predictable and full of cliche characters, it at least has high production values, a nice location and some good kills. Watchable

    Grave Encounters (2011)

I must admit that I do enjoy a good cinema verite style horror film when done right, mainly because they are usually less predictable that standard films. Grave Encounters looked as if it was going to tick all of the right boxes and for the most part it did but the odd scene managed to drag it down. The plot is set around a reality paranormal investigation show with the crew choosing the stay the night in an abandoned mental asylum in order to shoot a new episode. What they encounter though is very real and they quickly find out the errors of their ways. It's very well shot with the first two acts being steeped in atmosphere and tension with a great sense of realism until a couple of scenes take it a little too far and completely drag you out of the realistic setting. These scenes don't quite ruin the film, they just take away from what could have been an excellent and frightening production. It's definitely worth a look and will genuinely frighten many a viewer.

    Atrocious (2011)

Another cinema verite style film, Atrocious is a Spanish film that offers absolutely nothing new but does manage to create a creepy atmosphere. The story focuses on a family that moves into their old family home in the Spanish countryside with the borther and sister taking it upon themselves to make a film about a local legend of a girl that haunts the woods with grissly consequences. At a brisk 70 minutes, Atrocious never over stays its welcome despite quite a large number of scenes that seem to the drag. It takes a little too long to get into the meat of the film but the final twenty minutes are genuinely creepy and offer some nice little scares. Unfortunately it just takes too long to get going and so ends up in the average category.

    The Woods (2006)

Lucky McKee's The Woods is a film that seems to be held in quite a high regard by many horror film fans but for the life of me I can't understand why. A teenage girl is sent to a catholic boarding school by her parents, a school that seems to be surrounded by a malevolent woods. The main problem with The Woods is that it's simply not frightening and fails to provide any sort of creepy atmosphere. The final twenty minutes are mostly silly with what comes before it not being much better. It's not a terrible film by any means just a very average one and what can only be called a disappointment.

    Trespass (2011)

Considering that home invasion film Trespass stars both Nicholas cage and Nicole Kidman and still managed go completely under everyones radar tells you a lot about the quality of the film. To put it simply, it's average in every possible way. From acting, direction, writing to horror moments there is nothing that stands out as being either bad or good, the film simply plods along doing its thing and throws a number of plot twists at us thinking that's enough to provide an entertaining film. It's like countless other home invasion films that have come before it yet it's actually hard to even call this one a horror considering the lack of gore or any real terrifying moments. Having finished the film I realised I didn't hate or I didn't love it, it simply passed the time. Whether that is a recommendation or not I don't know.

    Mulberry Street (2006)

The plot for Mulberry Street sounded like it could be some great B-Movie fun; a deadly infection breaks out in Manhattan causing people to devolve into blood thirsty rat creatures. Unfortunately what we actually get is a low budget by the numbers zombie film complete with a group of rag tag people being trapped inside an apartment building as said creatures try to eat them for lunch. There is nothing new to see here, it takes far too long to get going and even when it does it still manages to be almost entirely uninteresting. There are no scares, average gore and a by the numbers script. This one is definitely a disappointment.

    The Caller (2011)

Perhaps I had low expectations due to the fact that The Caller ended being sent straight to DVD but what I got was a surprisingly interesting little horror/thriller film that managed to hold my attention throughout. The plot revolves around a troubled woman called Mary who has just moved into a new apartment. She begins to receive calls from a mysterious woman who happens to be calling from the past. When Mary tries to break contact, the woman from the past uses her unique situation to gain revenge in an inventive way. Yes it's not entirely original as it borrows quite heavily from the likes of Frequency but it has enough twists to hold your attention as well as being both well acted and creepy at times. If you watch it with low expectations like I did then you might be in for a little surprise.

    Case 39 (2009)

Run of the mill evil kid horror film that offers very little new but what it does it does quite well. The story is quite predictable and there is an overuse of CGI and loud noise scares but the kid is creepy enough to hold your attention and the acting is above average with Rene Zellweger and Bradley Cooper involved. If you want an average film to pass the time then you could do worse but don't expect Case 39 to provide anything particularly new or interesting

    Panic Button (2011)

There is no denying that this direct to DVD UK horror film has an interesting concept; four people are selected as winners of a social media websites competition with the prize being a trip to new York on board a private jet with the only catch being that they must partake in a new game on board the flight. Obviously said game is a lot more sinister than meets the eye. the problem with panic button is the execution, to put it simply it's fair too boring. The pace is incredibly slow and the entire film is extremely repetitive obviously showing a lack of ideas from the writers. They managed to come up with an interesting concept but didn't have the know how to flesh it out. This isn't to say it's a terrible film as there are some genuinely interesting scenes it's just flatters to deceive far too often. Disappointing

    Jennifers Body (2009)

Written by Diablo Cody of Juno fame, I was expected a well written and witty horror comedy but to call Jennifers body tame would be the understatement of the year. The plot is about a high schoo, student who gets turned into a demon who preys on young by seducing them and killing them. There are a couple of gore scenes but other than that there is very little horror to be found here and very little comedy either. The only thing to recommend would eb Meghan Fox, if you focus all your time to looking at her then Jennifers Body will you worth the watch. Otherwise it's distinctly average.

The Possession Of Emma Evans (Exorcismus) (2010)

On the face of it this film both looks at sounds like your typcial run of the mill exorcism film that we have seen countless times before and to be honest for the majority of the film it is. Luckily though there are a couple of surpirises and pieces of originality that manage to raise it up from mediocrity to average. The plot is simple, girl becomes possessed and her uncle priest tries to save her but as stated everything isn't exactly what it seems. It's not frightening in the least and some of the acting and effects are poor but I have seen much worse exorcism films than this one.

    Deadheads (2011)

Ever since the release of Shaun of the Dead there have been a myriad of zombie comedies released with varying degrees of success. Deadheads is the latest direct to DVD effort but unfortunately it ranks in the lower half of the list despite the occasionally funny scene. The problem is that it relies far too much on idiotic humour which misses much more often that it hits which is unfortunate considering the plot is at least somewhat original as it focuses on a couple of zombies who remain completely intelligible and their mission to reunite one of them with their former love. There is the occasional gore scene which are mostly done well but ultimately it's the lack of comedy and too many long drawn out scenes that make this one more of a failure than a success.

The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)

Considering that the original Human centipede was pretty awful i have no idea why I bothered to watch the sequel which somehow manages to be worse than the original. The plot focuses on an overweight and mentally challenged security guard who is obsessed with the original film and decides to make his own Human centipede. Admittedly it's an interesting concept and could have been used to explore possible effects horror films can have on unstable minds but instead it's a painfully boring film designed to shock and disgust you of which it does neither. Stay away.

    Apollo 18 (2011)

If ever there was a film that you could show as an example of how NOT to direct a film then Apollo 18 would be that film. The concept is an interesting one; the crew of Apollo 18 or sent on a classified mission to the moon but once they get there they realise the real reason they are there is much more dangerous. The problem lies with the execution in that this is another found footage style film but a lot of the scenes are almost incomprehensible. They are blurry and grainy as well as far too many being in needless slow motion. It's a mess and ruins an otherwise interesting story. Unfortunately it's simply not frightening due to the poor shooting style but amazingly it still manages to be watchable but only just. You're better off avoiding this one.

An American Werewolf In London (1981)

This film needs little introduction. It's the story of two American backpackers who encounter a werewolf on the yorkshire moors, one of which is killed while the other undergoes certain changes. It has a great mix of horror and comedy with a light tone throughout but still manages to mix in some great moments of horror. The special effects from Rick Baker are legendary and still hold up today. If you're looking for a fun horror film that this one fits the bill nicely.

    The Thing (2011)

I really didn't know what expect when going in to see this prequel to John Carpenters classic horror film. It turns that it pretty much plays out as an inferior rehash of the original. Honestly there is nothing new to be found here at all bar some nice creature effects and a reasonably well done story tie in to the original. Unfortunately it's lacking the tension and horror moments that John Carpenters film had and instead relies mostly on jump scares to try and scare the audience. Luckily though it does manage to entertain and could have been much worse. It's not near the standard of the original but it's a still a pretty well done prequel.

    Fright Night (2011)

I was never a huge fan of the original film despite the praise that's heaped on it by many so I was able to judge this remake on it's own merits and not compare it to the original so much. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. Vampire films have gotten a bad reputation because of the Twilight series and although there isn't buckets of gore or many scares in this reboot is at least more of adults vampire film that provides just enough of both. The performance of Colin Farrell is decent enough and the story moves along at a good pace with some decent special effects and a nice climax. Many lovers of the original will hate it but as remakes go it's one of the better ones and it certainly managed to entertain me.

A Lonely Place To Die (2011)

Despite reading many good reviews from various horror websites and wanting to go see it, I somehow managed to miss A Lonely Place To Die when it was in the cinema. It turns out that was a blessing in disguise because I have to admit that I mostly disappointed with the film. For starters the plot is completely unoriginal, a bunch of people head out into the wilderness only to end up being hunted down by a group of men with guns. There are one or two plot twists but it's mostly by the book and lacking in suspense. The acting is also terrible from most of the cast and for a supposed horror film it's not evenly remotely frightening or gorey and has little tension. It does have excellent cinematography though and moves a long at nice pace never allowing boredom to set in. It's just so formulaic though that it never stood a chance at being anything more than average.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2011)

A remake of a 1973 TV movie, this Guillermo Del Toro produced horror film plays out very much like a dark childrens fairly tale, albeit splattered with a nice amount of blood. I have heard quite a few bad reviews of this film but I must admit that I quite enjoyed it for what it is, a dark gothic fairy tale about small creatures living the walls of an old house that have a penchant for eating childrens teeth and bones. I have never seen the original TV film but this remake has a suitably eerie setting, a tense atmosphere throughout and some good camera work. It has one huge fault though, the creatures are revealed far too early and feature on screen way too much and thus they lose almost all of their menace. If they had been kept in dark for longer this could have been an excellent dark childrens story but in the end it loses most of it's ability to frighten and is thus relegated to the slightly above average pile. It's definitely worth a watch though.

    Final Destination 5 (2011)

You get exactly what you expect when watching this fifth installment of the franchise. It is almost a carbon copy of the first 4 films complete with the huge opening disaster scene and then the survivors being killed off in elaborate ways. Your enjoyment of this installment will depend entirely on how you viewed the others. The opening sequence set on a bridge is excellent with mostly great effects work. The death sequences are also entertaining but again there is little in the way of storytelling meaning it does get a little repetitive after a while. Still it's another solid entry into the series and does the exact same job that all of the others did and is also an improvement on the previous entry.

    11-11-11 (2011)

Darren Lynn Bousmanns latest effort has been almost universally panned by everyone who has seen it but having just seen it myself I son't think it's quite as bad as it's made out to be and I can at least see what he was trying to do. Based around the numbers phenomenon where you continuously see a number throughout your life, in this case 11-11, but with a tacked on religious and supernatutal plt to boot. yes the story is quite poor and the twist ending is just silly but Bousmann whould be commended for trying to make an eerie and creepy film full of horror visuals. Does he succeed? No, but there are some nice visual work with some creepy moments but there are also plenty of moments where the costumes look incredibly cheap the visuals poor. Bousmann ha stried to make an old school horror film full of creepy visuals and atmosphere and on that he must be commended but unfortunately he failed to achieve what he set out to do.

    Frankenfish (2004)

The plot of Frankenfish is typical of the myriad of B-Movies of the same type; a genetically engineered fish escapes it's creators and wreaks havoc munching it's way through various characters. In this case the fish is loose in the Bayou and is attacking a group of people stuck on three houseboats. What elevates Frankenfish above the others is the superior acting and effects, they are well above normal for this type of B-Movie, even one made in 2004. There isn't much gore but what there is is done well and the fish itself looks well and is suitably menacing. It's in no way frightening but manages to be entertaining throughout but bear in made it's much better viewing after a beer or two!

    Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)

Almost a carbon copy of the original two films, needless to say if you enjoyed the first two then you will also enjoy this one. It's a prequel to the first two which allows for the filmmakers to add in the only feature that distinguishes it from the other entries, a pretty bland and unoriginal backstory. If loud noises and doors opening and closing are your thing then this is for you. As for me, I found it passable.

    Shark Night (2011)

Basically a syfy original shark feature with a bigger budget, this shark film brings nothing new to the genre but still manages to be vaguely entertaining. A group of college students head off to a lake and get munched on by a load of hungry sharks. A lack of gore lets this one down, it's PG-13 and really suffers because of it. Never the less, there are some fun scenes and if you enjoy idiotic shark films then you will like this too. Everyone else will hate it!

    Chillerama (2011)

Chillerama is an anthology film consisting of four different sections directed by four different directors and done in the style of old gross out drive in films. Unfortunately though it's very much a mixed bag. The first film called Wadzilla is easily the best as it's funny and expertly shot. The next two are just poor as they are way too silly and very rarely funny. The second film is also a musical and is painful to watch at the times. The wraparound story is quite good though, especially the last five minutes and provides some good viewing. If you're gonna give this a try then you're better off skipping the middle two films and just watch the rest!

    The Grey (2012)

Ok so technically it's not a horror film but Joe Carnahan's excellent film has plenty of horror elements to warrant a review here. To put it simply, it's an excellent watch from start to finish chock full of action, excitement, suspense and brilliant sound and effects. The story follows a group men involved in a plane crash in Alaska who are stalked by a pack of wolves. Shot on location in freezing conditions, The Grey has stunning cinematography and you can really imagine the torture the characters are going through. An excellent script, fitting and ending and plenty of jump out of your seat moments make for great viewing.

    The Woman In Black (2012)

I having been meaning to watch the original TV movie for a long time now but somehow I ended up watching this remake first and I am very annoyed that I did! I really don't understand the positive reviews the film is getting as bar the excellent sets and costumes there is nothing much else to recommend here for horror fans. There is very little suspense or creepy atmosphere and the vast majority of the scares rely on predictable loud noises, not once did I jump out of my seat. The story is interesting enough and I can't fault the acting but for a straight up horror film it simply isn't scary. Even my girlfriend who usually jumps out of her seat at anything remotely scary didn't flicnh once. Hugely disappointing.
