    The Resident (2010)

The plot tells the story of a young Manhattan doctor who finds what seems to be the perfect apartment, one with a great location and extremely cheap for its size. She slowly begins to realize though that her landlord might have ulterior motives for renting it so cheap as it begins to dawn in her that he has a seriously unhealthy obsession with her and will stop at nothing to get his woman.

There are many problems with The Resident with the main being just how derivative and unoriginal the plot is. There is nothing on show here that you haven’t seen before and done a lot better. The opening act is quite solid as it sets up the storyline but then we are treated to a ridiculously long and silly flashback scene at the start of the second act that was just not needed. In fact the entire midsection is extremely slow paced and borders on boring at times. It picks up again in the final act as our landlord finally completely loses the plot and the last 20 minutes or so are entertaining, it’s not enough to make up for what came before it. Sadly for a horror film, it’s entirely devoid of scares bar the odd uncomfortable scene so if you are looking for a frightening time this film isn’t for you. The cast is quite good with Jeffrey Dean Morgan putting in a good show as the landlord despite the poor script. As for why Christopher Lee’s character is included I’ll never know, he was utterly pointless to the plot.

The Resident is a poor enough film that’s mildly entertaining in the final 20 minutes but borderline boring for the rest. It’s very unoriginal and devoid of any scares; let’s hope that the next Hammer production will be better than this.

    Cropsey (2009)

Set around director Zeman’s home on Statten Island, New York, the documentary is based around the disappearances of five different children and the real life bogeyman who is accused of the crime. Cropsey was a term that the children of the island used for the bogeyman and with the disappearances of these children, Zemen and a number of his friends delve into the mysterious history and current practices on the island and the life of Andre Rand, the real Cropsey of the island.

Nearly every person has heard stories about various bogeymen while growing up but not many of us have the chance to make a film about said bogeyman. That’s exactly what the makers of Cropsey have done and it certainly makes for an interesting watch. It’s a very informative film that delves into the past of Statten Island including the tuberculosis hospital that was turned into a mental institution and how there are a number of people living in the surrounding woods that may or may not be past patients of the hospital. The story of Andre Rand is a disturbing one as the filmmakers show he was into some weird things and was a very messed up an. It is also an excellent film for documenting just how a legend is formed and somebody ends up becoming a new generation’s bogeyman.

Cropsey is both an informative and slightly disturbing documentary about a child killer and the birth of a bogeyman legend. It deserves more recognition than it has gotten and if you get the chance you should definitely give it a look.

The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is pure B-Movie fun; Jeff is ordinary guy stuck in a job he hates and living a boring life with his comic book loving mate. His life is turned upside though when an old man bursts into his house claiming that he is the last descendent of H.P. Lovecraft whose horror stories were not fiction but based on fact. He must protect one half of an ancient relic from falling into the hands of the Starspawn and his followers who are intent on reuniting the relic and resurrecting the Cthulu from the depths of the ocean.

This film is extremely silly from start to finish but it’s all the better for it due the fun way in which it’s filmed. Done on an extremely small budget, the cheap practical effects give it a real old school feel and also add to the comedy effect of the film. In fact the comedy element is probably its strongest feature as it is genuinely funny throughout due to some good writing and strong characters. The action is silly due to the budget constraints but is still fun and the story all comes together in a perfectly silly B-Movie ending that will leave you with a smile on your face.

The Last Lovecraft – Call of the Cthulu is an extremely cheap B-Movie that certainly won’t be to everyone’s tastes but if you sit back and enjoy the silliness of it all then there is plenty of fun and silly entertainment to be had here.

    Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The film’s title tells almost everything you need to know about the plot, the Mega Shark that defeated the giant octopus from the original film is still alive and kicking and wanting to kill a few more people. Another prehistoric animal has been accidentally released from a cave, a giant crocodile named Crocosaurus and it is also intent on killing as many people as it can. This leads our scientists and military personal with no choice but to get the two to fight each other to death.

The fact that I watched this film only a couple of days ago and have nearly forgotten every single aspect of it tells you all you need to know. Gone is the over the top ridiculousness of the original, this sequel is bafflingly played out in a much more serious tone. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still extremely silly but not in the good way. The effects are as terrible as usual, as is the acting and even the usually fun action scenes are mostly gone. It seems as if the formula for success that was the original film was stumbled upon by accident and they are unable to reproduce it.

Extremely disappointing sequel as it finally looked as if The Asylum were starting to make those silly over the top B-Movies that everyone loves. Very poor with very few redeeming features, this matchup is not even deserving of an under card spot.

    Rubber (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is just ludicrous; an inanimate car tire comes alive just outside a small desert town. The tire discovers that it has telepathic powers and begins to kill and destroy anything and everything in its path except one particular woman that it seems to become obsessed over. Meanwhile there is a group of people observing the “film” from afar by using binoculars to watch the tire on its rampage.

Yes you did read that right; this is primarily a film about a killer tire. It’s so silly that you would think that Rubber could only be a B-Movie but it’s anything but. I would have to classify it has an art house film due to how strange the plot is. Take the killer tire part and you are still left with group of people observing from distance with binoculars thinking they are watching a film and a cop that is trying to play along in order to entertain the audience. Really it’s impossible to explain it’s that strange, so strange in fact that how anyone could consider it entertaining is beyond me. There are plenty of good things about Rubber though, it has great effects and plenty of gore as the tire blows up plenty of heads. The cinematography is great and the plot is entertaining at times. In the end though it’s just too strange and the pace can be very slow with long drawn out shots of the tire rolling through the desert.

Rubber is a film I would never recommend to anyone because it’s just too weird but if you’re ever in the mood for an art house film about a killer tire then give it a go. It’s without doubt the best killer tire film I have ever seen.

    Dinocroc vs Supergator (2010)

Click to read on my blog

A government funded company that was tasked with developing a growth hormone to enhance food production and thus end world hunger has taken it upon themselves to use the hormone for more nefarious means. They have managed to create two huge animals, one a mix between a dinosaur and a crocodile and the other a giant alligator. This being a SyFy film, both animals escape and begin to chomp their way around a Hawaiian island. It’s up to a government agent, a conservation officer and a hunter to try and stop the marauding beasts.

I have started to believe that the SyFy channel simply don’t put any effort whatsoever into creating these films. Yet again the effects are diabolical but that’s not the issue. If they are going to make a film about two beasts fighting each other they could at least make said fight a little longer than three minutes long! In fact the titular creatures are so rarely on screen I was beginning to think that they had got lost. There is so little action to be found here which is a shame because the film is actually well acted for the most part and at least tries to explain the reasons for creating the creatures. In the end though, it’s another bore fest with too much talking and not enough silly action.

A film about two creatures squaring off should be fun but this is anything but as there simply isn’t enough creature action. Not even so bad it’s good; this fight ends up being another non event.

    The Horde (La Horde) (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The storyline is extremely simple; a group of cops storm a rundown apartment block with the intention of freeing their comrade who has been taking hostage by a group of gangsters. Said cops are thwarted by the gangsters though and held hostage themselves. That’s the least of their problems though as a there has just been a zombie outbreak and the apartment block seems to be attracting more than its fair share. The cops and the gangsters have to form and unlikely partnership in order to fight their way out of the building and hopefully survive through the night.

The zombie’s in this blood soaked French film are not your slow rambling along types, this zombies are fast and extremely strong which adds a whole new level of menace to the situation. Yes the story is simple and is reminiscent of Assault on Precinct 13 but it’s the perfect setup for plenty of mindless zombie action. The only problem is that the midsection of the film is surprisingly light on bloody action which is strange for a film of this type. It certainly picks up in the final act though as all hell is let loose with plenty of blood and gore. There are some nice characters to be seen here, particularly the wise cracking old war veteran whose weapon of choice is a Gatling gun. The final scene is also quite brave and not one you would likely see in a Hollywood film.

Le Horde does exactly what it says on the tin, it offers some great zombie action with nice effects and plenty of gore. Incredibly bland story aside, it’s an entertaining watch, particularly for zombie fans.

    Sharktopus (2010)

Click to read on my blog

Directed by Declan O’Brien whose biggest claim to fame is having helmed the third entry of the Wrong Turn series, the plot of Sharktopus has been done countless times before. Genetic engineers have managed to create a half shark half octopus hybrid for military purposes that they control using a device strapped to the creatures head. After it hits it’s head on the underneath of a boat, the device is broken leading the creature to roam free and kill every human it comes into contact with. It’s up to a genetic scientist and a bounty hunter to stop the rampaging creature from munching its way through the human populace.

I honestly believe that the SyFy company bigwigs have just one basic script that they use to make all of their films and simply fill in the blanks with whatever creature they have thought up this month. There is nothing new to be seen here and just why they insist on making these creature features as serious films I will never understand. Clearly there is scope to create a ridiculously over the top and fun B-Movie when your creature is a half shark half octopus hybrid but there are no laughs to be found here, not even unintentional ones. The kills are mostly unimaginative and consist of awfully rendered CGI blood splashing around onto rocks and walls. In fact the entire film’s effects are downright awful and look like something made on a commodore 64. Credit has to be given to Corman for coming up with an excellent creature design and something which is actually imaginative but the miniscule budget and the ineptness of the SyFy channels effects team have failed miserably to bring the creature to the screen. In all fairness, even if they had succeeded it still would have been a poor film that is far too similar to every other SyFy channel creature feature.

Roger Corman should just retire; he is way above creating creatures for the SyFy channel that are never going to be handled properly. Sharktopus is a film that could have been great fun of not taken seriously but unfortunately it’s full of terrible CGI, unimaginative kills and very little tension or entertainment. This film marks the beginning of the end for my viewing of SyFy channel creature features.

    Primal (2010)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is one giant horror film cliché in itself and seriously lacks any ounce of originality; a group of friends join an anthropology student on an outing into the Australian wilderness to study an ancient rock painting. After a bout of skinny dipping in a waterhole, one of the group becomes sick eventually leading to her becoming extremely aggressive and hell bent on killing every member of the group. The group must make an extremely tough choice; kill their friend or risk being killed themselves. When another of the group begins to turn, the remaining members discover the real meaning behind the rock paintings they came to study.

There is nothing new or original about Primal, in fact you will have seen everything on show here in countless other films of the same type. What makes the film watchable is the production values and the bearable characters. Despite its low budget, the film still looks very well with some excellent practical gore effects. The plot moves along at a good pace and doesn’t take too long to get to the main horror part of the story. At only 80 minutes long it never allows boredom to creep in and knows not to overstay it’s welcome. Yes the story is silly and there is certainly nothing frightening about Primal but if your looking for a simple horror film to provide some light entertainment then you can do worse than this small Aussie effort.

Josh Reed has crafted a horror film that is the very definition of unoriginality but, despite this, it still manages to work even with its incredibly simple premise. It’s certainly a film for horror fans only but as direct to DVD films go you could do a lot worse.

    The Howling (1981)

Click to read on my blog

The story focuses on a female newsreader that has a near fatal and strange encounter with a serial killer that is obsessed with her. In order to help her overcome her ordeal, her psychiatrist sends the newswomen to a rehabilitation retreat but it soon becomes apparent that her fellow inhabitants may not be what they seem and there may be an ulterior motive for her being sent to the retreat.

Director Joe Landis has managed to create a fun and entertaining film because despite it being primarily a horror film it never takes itself too seriously. Admittedly the basic premise is nothing new, a person being sent away only to a retreat only to find out the inhabitants are not quite human has been done countless times before but The Howling is so well written that it still manages to seem fresh. A lot of people forget that this film was released before its much more famous cousin An American Werewolf in London and was undoubtedly an inspiration for the special effects in that film. Obviously there was no CGI available at the time so the transformation scenes all had to be done using practical effects and they look great. Yes the werewolves themselves look a little hokey and not in slightest bit frightening but it doesn’t take away from the enjoyment of the film. Perhaps the only real downside is that it takes a little while to get to the main storyline but once the werewolves start attacking it’s good old fashioned horror fun despite it not being frightening in the slightest.

The so called twist is painfully obvious and the storyline has been done to death but Joe Landis has made his film with a sense of fun which provides solid entertainment throughout.

    Monster Man (2003)

Click to read on my blog

Originality isn’t the strong point when it comes to the plot; two friends and a woman they picked up hitchhiking are terrorised by a disfigured and monstrous looking man driving a huge metal clad monster truck. That’s the entire plot explained in one sentence.

What the film lacks in originality it more than makes up for in entertainment value as it really is first class entertainment throughout its relatively short running time. Although the acting isn’t always of the highest caliber, there is a nice chemistry between the two male leads from the off with plenty of jokes that are actually quite funny. Monster Man wastes no time in letting you know that it’s a film not to be taken too seriously but instead to sit back and enjoy the ride. Once the monster truck shows up then it’s straight up comedy horror as the truck relentlessly pursues are three hapless people across the American desert. The truck itself looks excellent and suitably frightening and the effects throughout are very well done. The driving scenes all look great and although there isn’t an awful lot of gore, what little there is looks excellent. The pace of the film never lets up ensuring entertainment throughout and there are some excellent visual as well and as dialogue driven comedy. Yes the story is predictable and you will know what the outcome of the film is going to be but luckily Monster Man is great fun in reaching its predictable ending and is certainly one of the better “killer in a car” films of recent times.

Pure comedy horror fun, Monster Man is funny and entertaining throughout with some nice effects, good driving scenes and a very cool looking monster truck. It’s a shame that it’s not more well known as it deserves to be seen by more people. If you can get your hands on a copy then it’s definitely worth your time. Great fun.

    Infestation (2009)

Click to read on my blog

The plot is essentially no different from the countless other films of this type; a slacker named Cooper awakes in his office block to find himself covered in spider webbing. After breaking free, he comes to realise that the world has been taken over by giant insects everyone else in his office has suffered the same fate. Cooper takes it upon himself to awake a small rag tag group from their web induced coma and together they must fight for their survival.

The most surprising aspect of Infestation is how good the CGI effects are given the budget of the film, the insects all look believable and the film never suffers from ropey effects. Although the plot is as unoriginal as they come, the script itself is very well written with a good mix of characters that provide plenty of humour throughout. Although not every joke hits its mark, Infestation is still a funny film with most of the comedy coming from Cooper as the typical office slacker. Rankin knows that a film about giant insects can never be taken seriously so there is a sense of fun throughout the proceedings with a nice blend between the comedy and the insect action. The action scenes are solid enough although they are obviously restricted by the films budget but still remain entertaining throughout and it all leads up a well done, although predictable, climax. Although classified as a horror film, there is nothing even remotely frightening to be found here so if you’re looking for scares then Infestation isn’t for you but if good cheesy horror comedy is what you’re after then you can’t go wrong with this little film.

Writer/Director Kyle Rankin has crafted a genuinely funny comedy horror with solid CGI effects and decent action that provides solid entertainment throughout. Unfortunately it’s yet another film that not too many people know about but if you get the chance it’s definitely worth a watch.

    Rec 2 (2009)

Click to read on my blog

The sequel picks up exactly where the original film ended but this time the action follows a team of Spanish police as they are tasked with entering the building to escort in a medical officer and to search for survivors. They are almost immediately set upon by the infected inhabitants leading the loss of one of the team. After pressing the medical officer for answers it seems as if things are not as they seem and the cause of the infection is much more sinister than a simple infection.

The actual story behind the action of Rec 2 is very good as it ends up going in a completely unexpected direction. There is a much more complex film with many more plot points than the original that even brings in a supernatural element to the story. The problem lies with the films execution; to put it bluntly it plays out more like an action computer game than a film. Gone are frightening scenes of the original that have been replaced by countless action scenes that simply don’t work and are almost incomprehensible at times due to the overuse of shaky cam. The camera point of view shifts at various times from soldier to soldier which almost feels as if you are changing character in a first person shooter game. I really can’t stress enough how similar this looks to the countless zombie games that are flooding the market. Balagueró has actually managed to come up an interesting back story for the infection and if he focused on the slow building tension and scare tactics of the original then this sequel would have been every bit as good as the original. The final twenty minutes are excellent as the plot unfolds without the silly action scenes. Sadly it’s not enough though and we end up with a severely inferior sequel despite the good ideas.

Rec 2 is a huge disappointment that ends up feeling like you are watching someone play a computer game. It’s unfortunate as it has an interesting back story and some nice ideas but suffers from its execution. More of an action film than a horror; this comes no where near to matching the quality of the original.

    Fertile Ground (2011)

Part of the After Dark Originals series, Fertile Ground is unfortunately another mediocre entry in what has become a hugley disappointing first year for the Originals banner. It satrts quite well with an interesting set up, good acting and production values but quickly descends into a seen it all before ghost story that's predictable from start to finish and downright boring for most of the second half. The script is very poor with even the overuse of loud noises failing to make you jump even once. This one is better left unwatched I just hope that if After Dark decide to do the Originals series again next year that make sure to produce much better films that this.

    The Task (2010)

Another of the After Dark Originals releases, The Task is unfortunately on the same level as Fertile Ground, that is incredibly mediocre. The most annoying part is that it actually has the basis for an interesting a film; a group of people sign up to take part in a reality tv show where they must spend the night in an abandoned prison for the criminally insane and face their worst fears. The problem is with the script in that it's not frightening in the least, has almost zero gore and one a couple of silly twists at the end. With a better writer and a little more creativity it could have been a decent film but it ends up being one to avoid.

    Faces In The Crowd

Billed as a horror film, this is a painfully boring film at times that tells to story of a woman plsyed by Milla Jovivich who is suffering from a face blindness which is a condition that renders it impossible for her to recognise peoples faces. She got this condition after a run in with a serial killer who seems to want to finish off the job he started. The problem is that most of the first hour focuses entirely on the womans condition and it creeps along at an incredibly slow pace. The final half hour is as deriviative as they come as it plays out exactly the same as countless other serial killer films complete with a painfully obvious twist. It's no wonder Faces in the Crowd is getting horrible reviews as it really is a poor effort.

    Red State (2011)

Kevin Smith ventures into horror territory with his latest film Red State, a film which aims to to show just how crazy some of the evangelical Christian groups in America can be. Maybe not strictly a horror film, it tells the story of three kids being taken hostage by small fanatical religious group who plan to kill the boys because of their supposedly evil ways. What transpires is a Waco type siege incident and plenty of bloody carnage. It's certainly a brave film and succeeds quite well at showing just how crazy these groups are. The first two acts are also very entertaining and extremely well done but it's the final ten minutes or so that let the film down as it starys into unbelievable territory and loses alot of the credibility it has previously built up. Still it's certainly a good film with an interesting subject matter that's well worth a watch.

    Shark Zone (2003)

If there is any particular type of B-Movie that I love it's the shark attack film as you know that you are in for an utterly ridiculous film full of goofs and so bad they're good scenes. Shark Zone takes it to a new level of silliness though and you can't but laugh at how bad it all is. The plot is your typical shark plot, a small beach town community is overrun with sharks right before its annual festival. Through in some shady Russian diamond hunters and you have your story. The real fun though is had spotting the goofs, they range from countless stock footage being used over and over, divers speaking under water despite the fact their mouths don't move, a lost ship wreck that happens to be about 100 metres from the coast and near the surface, sharks that hunt in packs and roar as well as many more. There is no doubt that Shark Zone is an awful film but it's great fun with a few beers as you laugh your way through how silly it all is.

Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2 (2011)

The original Laid To Rest seemed to be well received by both horror critics and fans alike. Personally I felt it was average at best and lacked a good story to go along with the admittedly excellent gore effects. The exact same criticisms can be leveled at this sequel, yet again the practical effects are top notch but the plot just isn't interesting or engaging enough to hold your attention. We do find out a little more about Chromeskulls background and the fact he is part of a shady organisation but it's all to familiar which, just like the original, means this sequel is a big disappointment as it could have been so much better.

I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006)

The original two films in the I know What You Did Last Summer series were quite divisive, either you hate them or enjoyed the simple slasher fun that they offered. The majority of people have probably never even heard of this third entry in the franchise and those who have seen it tend to hate it. Yes it has a smaller budget and worse actors but it follows the exact same formula as the original two and despite it's many faults and blatant copying of the latter Friday the 13th sequels it still manages to provide some light slasher fun.

    The Woman (2011)

A sequel to the 2009 film Offspring, Lucky Mckee steps into the directors chair for this strange feminist film that has been the cause of a fair amount of controversy. Having never seen the original I can't comment on it's quality but The Woman is both an interesting and strange family drama about a clearly troubled man who finds a wild woman in the woods and takes it upon himself to civilise her. From this point on things get more and more weird until eventually crossing the line into madness. The opening 2 acts and very good with plenty of tension through the family but the final act strays much too far from reality and drags the rest of the film down. it's certainly worth a watch and you may enjoy the final act but for me it brought a very good film down to an average one.

    Wrong Turn 4

The law of diminishing returns has certainly rang true so far in the Wrong Turn series as each entry has been worse than the previous one. This prequel and fourth installment finally breaks the trend by at least being better than part 3 and it tries to offer something new by taking the action out of the backwoods and bringing it to an abandoned mental asylum where are deformed antagonists were holed up before escaping to the woods. Of course a group of early twenties decide to shelter from the storm inside the asylum allowing our deformed hillbillies to have some fun. It's not a good film but there are some nice gore scenes and if not taken too seriously it can be good slasher fun. Always predictable and full of cliche characters, it at least has high production values, a nice location and some good kills. Watchable

    Grave Encounters (2011)

I must admit that I do enjoy a good cinema verite style horror film when done right, mainly because they are usually less predictable that standard films. Grave Encounters looked as if it was going to tick all of the right boxes and for the most part it did but the odd scene managed to drag it down. The plot is set around a reality paranormal investigation show with the crew choosing the stay the night in an abandoned mental asylum in order to shoot a new episode. What they encounter though is very real and they quickly find out the errors of their ways. It's very well shot with the first two acts being steeped in atmosphere and tension with a great sense of realism until a couple of scenes take it a little too far and completely drag you out of the realistic setting. These scenes don't quite ruin the film, they just take away from what could have been an excellent and frightening production. It's definitely worth a look and will genuinely frighten many a viewer.

    Atrocious (2011)

Another cinema verite style film, Atrocious is a Spanish film that offers absolutely nothing new but does manage to create a creepy atmosphere. The story focuses on a family that moves into their old family home in the Spanish countryside with the borther and sister taking it upon themselves to make a film about a local legend of a girl that haunts the woods with grissly consequences. At a brisk 70 minutes, Atrocious never over stays its welcome despite quite a large number of scenes that seem to the drag. It takes a little too long to get into the meat of the film but the final twenty minutes are genuinely creepy and offer some nice little scares. Unfortunately it just takes too long to get going and so ends up in the average category.

Lucky McKee's The Woods is a film that seems to be held in quite a high regard by many horror film fans but for the life of me I can't understand why. A teenage girl is sent to a catholic boarding school by her parents, a school that seems to be surrounded by a malevolent woods. The main problem with The Woods is that it's simply not frightening and fails to provide any sort of creepy atmosphere. The final twenty minutes are mostly silly with what comes before it not being much better. It's not a terrible film by any means just a very average one and what can only be called a disappointment.

    Trespass (2011)

Considering that home invasion film Trespass stars both Nicholas cage and Nicole Kidman and still managed go completely under everyones radar tells you a lot about the quality of the film. To put it simply, it's average in every possible way. From acting, direction, writing to horror moments there is nothing that stands out as being either bad or good, the film simply plods along doing its thing and throws a number of plot twists at us thinking that's enough to provide an entertaining film. It's like countless other home invasion films that have come before it yet it's actually hard to even call this one a horror considering the lack of gore or any real terrifying moments. Having finished the film I realised I didn't hate or I didn't love it, it simply passed the time. Whether that is a recommendation or not I don't know.

    Mulberry Street (2006)

The plot for Mulberry Street sounded like it could be some great B-Movie fun; a deadly infection breaks out in Manhattan causing people to devolve into blood thirsty rat creatures. Unfortunately what we actually get is a low budget by the numbers zombie film complete with a group of rag tag people being trapped inside an apartment building as said creatures try to eat them for lunch. There is nothing new to see here, it takes far too long to get going and even when it does it still manages to be almost entirely uninteresting. There are no scares, average gore and a by the numbers script. This one is definitely a disappointment.

    The Caller (2011)

Perhaps I had low expectations due to the fact that The Caller ended being sent straight to DVD but what I got was a surprisingly interesting little horror/thriller film that managed to hold my attention throughout. The plot revolves around a troubled woman called Mary who has just moved into a new apartment. She begins to receive calls from a mysterious woman who happens to be calling from the past. When Mary tries to break contact, the woman from the past uses her unique situation to gain revenge in an inventive way. Yes it's not entirely original as it borrows quite heavily from the likes of Frequency but it has enough twists to hold your attention as well as being both well acted and creepy at times. If you watch it with low expectations like I did then you might be in for a little surprise.

    Case 39 (2009)

Run of the mill evil kid horror film that offers very little new but what it does it does quite well. The story is quite predictable and there is an overuse of CGI and loud noise scares but the kid is creepy enough to hold your attention and the acting is above average with Rene Zellweger and Bradley Cooper involved. If you want an average film to pass the time then you could do worse but don't expect Case 39 to provide anything particularly new or interesting

    Panic Button (2011)

There is no denying that this direct to DVD UK horror film has an interesting concept; four people are selected as winners of a social media websites competition with the prize being a trip to new York on board a private jet with the only catch being that they must partake in a new game on board the flight. Obviously said game is a lot more sinister than meets the eye. the problem with panic button is the execution, to put it simply it's fair too boring. The pace is incredibly slow and the entire film is extremely repetitive obviously showing a lack of ideas from the writers. They managed to come up with an interesting concept but didn't have the know how to flesh it out. This isn't to say it's a terrible film as there are some genuinely interesting scenes it's just flatters to deceive far too often. Disappointing

    Jennifers Body (2009)

Written by Diablo Cody of Juno fame, I was expected a well written and witty horror comedy but to call Jennifers body tame would be the understatement of the year. The plot is about a high schoo, student who gets turned into a demon who preys on young by seducing them and killing them. There are a couple of gore scenes but other than that there is very little horror to be found here and very little comedy either. The only thing to recommend would eb Meghan Fox, if you focus all your time to looking at her then Jennifers Body will you worth the watch. Otherwise it's distinctly average.

The Possession Of Emma Evans (Exorcismus) (2010)

On the face of it this film both looks at sounds like your typcial run of the mill exorcism film that we have seen countless times before and to be honest for the majority of the film it is. Luckily though there are a couple of surpirises and pieces of originality that manage to raise it up from mediocrity to average. The plot is simple, girl becomes possessed and her uncle priest tries to save her but as stated everything isn't exactly what it seems. It's not frightening in the least and some of the acting and effects are poor but I have seen much worse exorcism films than this one.

    Deadheads (2011)

Ever since the release of Shaun of the Dead there have been a myriad of zombie comedies released with varying degrees of success. Deadheads is the latest direct to DVD effort but unfortunately it ranks in the lower half of the list despite the occasionally funny scene. The problem is that it relies far too much on idiotic humour which misses much more often that it hits which is unfortunate considering the plot is at least somewhat original as it focuses on a couple of zombies who remain completely intelligible and their mission to reunite one of them with their former love. There is the occasional gore scene which are mostly done well but ultimately it's the lack of comedy and too many long drawn out scenes that make this one more of a failure than a success.

The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)

Considering that the original Human centipede was pretty awful i have no idea why I bothered to watch the sequel which somehow manages to be worse than the original. The plot focuses on an overweight and mentally challenged security guard who is obsessed with the original film and decides to make his own Human centipede. Admittedly it's an interesting concept and could have been used to explore possible effects horror films can have on unstable minds but instead it's a painfully boring film designed to shock and disgust you of which it does neither. Stay away.

    Apollo 18 (2011)

If ever there was a film that you could show as an example of how NOT to direct a film then Apollo 18 would be that film. The concept is an interesting one; the crew of Apollo 18 or sent on a classified mission to the moon but once they get there they realise the real reason they are there is much more dangerous. The problem lies with the execution in that this is another found footage style film but a lot of the scenes are almost incomprehensible. They are blurry and grainy as well as far too many being in needless slow motion. It's a mess and ruins an otherwise interesting story. Unfortunately it's simply not frightening due to the poor shooting style but amazingly it still manages to be watchable but only just. You're better off avoiding this one.

I couldnt get past the woeful soundtrack. normally i wouldnt even comment on the soundtrack of a film but it was so overwhelming, so inappropriate and just plain head wrecking i couldnt ignore it. totally ruinned what could have been an ok film
