Thank god. I just see this:

    zkejfzkjf--->zskjfhskejhf--->fedjhmee = scanlines

Dunno about that! I just learned a lot from Fagin's videos and posts on SHMUPS. Another good guy to check out is Fudoh over at http://scanlines.hazard-city.de/ he is another legend in the scanlines and scalers arena. :)

In simpler terms, it goes something like this.

    Console > Pyongyang's witchcraft > scanlines.

And if this were the middle ages, Pyongyang would currently be tied to a stake with some smouldering tinder at his feet.

Although I'm pretty sure he'd be able to make some kind of AV chain which would get him out of it :pac:

    I'd settle for 'bellend'. :)

On the Laserdisc front I just nabbed a copy of The Frighteners, NTSC, sealed. Sadly not the Signature Edition but the Extended Edition that features in the Signature Edition anyway.

Also, I may have some interesting blog news coming soon. I'll say nothing further until it's concrete. ;)

The laserdisc thing is appealing from a collectors point of view. How do they actually look in reality? I remember Rolfe mentioned they looked more 'organic' than dvd's, which is the visual version of Vinyl against digital media.

Whats your thoughts on how they look on screen?

You do realize you've just unleashed a new collecting habit which is going to consume vast vast swathes of your income?

Of course for the rest of us, it just means lots more shiny new photos in this thread :)

To put it in a 'giz a shot of yer laser yoke' context... picture quality falls in between a poor VHS transfer to near-DVD quality. Though some offer AC3, DTS and/or super hi res transfers.

Now, that may not sound appealing to many folks spoonfed a diet of Blu Ray and WMV-HD and so on, but Laserdisc does offer some things you just can't get on those formats.

Most notably, versions of movies and bonus features still unavailable on VHS, Betamax, DVD or Blu Ray to this day. Although you pay a premium for them.

The sound quality is second to none too, both for audio and video discs. Run it through a DAC and you'll have trouser custard everywhere! See, the chap I bought it off enlightened me to a very interesting point about Laserdisc players. At the time they were on the market and during their lifespan until their obsolesence, it could be said that the systems were so high-end that they were in many cases over-engineered.

As time wore on and the optical disc format(s) took a foothold, the manufacture quality became less of an importance and thus cheaper parts were substituted and thus bundled with that came a degredation in quality both in a/v and build terms. Sony Laserdisc players and the discs themselves are notoriously unreliable and suffer from appauling disc rot according to the written word amongst collectors.

I'm in agreement of sorts with the engineering side of things, I can see an element of truth in that. Plus, popping in a Queen live concert LD and pumping it through my Onkyo set up is just bliss. It's audibly different and better, but not in an anal "I listen to music blindfolded in a soundproofed room made out of hatstands and aubergines and spend €6m on a phono adapter" kind of way.

It's an interesting item to start collecting and it's relatively inexpensive to boot! :)

This is why I like collecting old electronics. (mainly audio gear for now as the missus is big into her music too, so I can get away with it! :D ). A lot of people seem to be of the understanding that new automatically = better. Wrong.

They fail to realize that what you should really be doing is to find in what era/manufacturer/model was that particular item engineered BEST, and buy that.

An amplifier made in the 70s or 80s which cost a grand at the time is going to have far better components than something made now for a fraction of the cost. The fact that they still work perfectly today is all the evidence you need.

Only issue is expiring components, but I've yet to come across something which doesn't work. And things like caps can always be replaced :)

I remember a Karaoke machine back in 91 was a laser disc based machine.
I can also remember the movie scenes in Rogue Leader were said to be the first digital Star Wars scenes outside of the Laserdisc versions, they predated the DVD by quite a bit.

I can also remember them from such films as Robocop (Boddicker uses one to show Bob Dick Jones' farewell speech "I cashing you in") being presented, along with the Ford Taurus, as a vision of things to come...
A bit like the mobile phone in Lethal Weapon, the one in the suitcase!

Don't forget stuff like Space Ace and Dragon's Lair were Laserdisc games too. :)

Nope, I'm pretty sure I can forget them, yup, forgotten them already....

Much prefer the nice proper platformer they made for the last gen of consoles of Dragons Lair, captured the visuals of the arcade game but trumped it with the addition of some actual gameplay, which is nice

Neither of them are as amazing as this:

Just when you reckon your memories of that game genre are enough to consign the entire thing to the nearest skip, you are then reminded, in that clip, of the truly awful music, featuring a band and a singer who seem to be doing two different, equally sh1te songs...

I take back almost everything I said about sidescrolling beat'em ups being the worst genre of all, these QTE or whatever games are without any redeeming titles at all....

Oh wait, I kinda loved Burning Soldier on the 3DO, damn!

this is a wee bit off topic but HMV currently have two versions of Akira on BLu Ray on sale price (standard and special editions). I know some of ye are akira aficionados, so does anyone know is there a difference between the transfers and which is the better one to get?

The BlueRay films are the same. The special edition version has a nice little booklet to go with it.

There's also an extra disc with some stuff, but it's nothing new if you already have Akira on DVD.

The film itself looks superb, but they really missed an opportunity as far as extras go.

Basically - pay the extra few bob for the booklet and metal tin case. Otherwise go standard!

I went special edition as I think it was only a few quid extra.

I have the steelbook Blu Ray. Fine edition for a fine movie. As far as I am aware there is no difference in disc contents for either edition.

Just popped on Terminator 2 and ran it through the amp via digital toslink.

    Un-frikkin-believable!

The audio is fantastic, loving it so far. :)

I've seen the Polystation fake PS3 before, but I think this is my first time seeing a fake PS1!

I saw tonnes on the continent yonks ago, in the late ninties/early noughties. Almost always some variation on a famiclone. I'd be keen to see the fake PS3, though. That'd be interesting.

Due to my plainly inflammatory remark about the GC controller it was intended to do the following...

    Set
    The
    Cat/s
    Amongst
    The
    Pigeons...

Loses it's effectiveness when explained, I should have probably used a better photo only I was all excited!

But seriously, the GC controller, did the folk in V-Tech have a hand in it?
Is this the actual WiiU touchscreen controller we're all waiting for??
    wiiu_controller_001_99128_640screen.jpg
    or is it this?

I love the GC controller, have the wavebird myself and I love playing with it. Think it is one of the best controllers for a system

Here's a few pics of the new control panel that arrived this evening.

It's an official one and not a repro or fake and in damn good condition.
Comes from a mostly unused E3 cab.
