Then put a sign up advising the wait may be anything from 2 mins to half an hour

Set the expectation with your customer that they may be waiting some time equals less unhappy customer than one who is waiting without a clue.

As I said already, where a prisoner is self harming in a cell, Gardai don't have time to put up a notice.

The "customer" has to accept when entering a Garda station that they may not understand everything they see in said station.

Well then try and help the customer and make it clearer for them no??

Why the smart @rse inverted commas btw?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the shortage of Gardai not down mainly to a 100 year old shift system where, in a busy station like Pearse St, you have the same amount of Police working wednesday morning as you have on a saturday night?

And that it can't be changed as they're looking for more money?

Very incorrect, there is a shift review going on at the moment, Gardai are not looking for more money. Gardai are however looking for a proper shift system at the moment which will allow them a decent work life balance, while providing the proper cover required.

Surely prisoners are not self harming 24/7. If there was a prisoner who had suicidal tendencies they should be under medical attention. Are AGS qualified to look after these people in the first place.

    I don't know.

Maybe one of the gards on this forum can tell us if it is true or not.

And if it is true, it's ridiculous, come on let's get this changed!

Would it be too much for the Garda to apologise to everyone waiting in the public area when they finally put in an appearance.

Something like "Sorry folks, I know some of you have been waiting nearly 20 mins but we had an emergency situation"

As I've said, there isn't always time, and the information is often sensitive so cannot be communicated to a member of the public.

You could give general information....no one is asking for specifics.

Diddler posts a good comment above about what you could say.

To be honest, its none of the Public's business.

It happens more often than you think, self harming goes from the idiot who thinks banging his head off the cell door for a compo claim is a good idea to the guy who tries to kill himself in the cell.

AGS ensure the prisoner has no method to harm themselves and then if required a Doctor is called to assess the prisoners mental health. there are systems in place for all of this. This type of prisoner requires a lot more looking after and can tie up a member for hours until a Doctor arrives.

    "customers" pay for goods.

    In the very literal sense.

What do you see us as may I ask? (I have a feeling I am not going to like this answer :()

That's standard garda customer service OP.

I had to call in to a station once, it was quite early, about 7am. I was waiting 15 minutes for someone to come out, even though I could see about 4 of them behind the screen, standing around chatting. In the end I just started banging on the screen which seemed to grab their attention.

True, and Gardai are entitled to a decent response from public workers who are paid by their taxes.

Same as the rest of us.

And to expand a little more.....

Members of a public who you are paid to assist?

The Injured Party who your job is to help?

This does not add up with the excuses we are being given on this thread as to why members of public can not be served at the public counter in a timely fashion (or why they should call 999 rather then going to the station)

    Am a little confused :confused::(

    This thread is ridiculous.

After reading the 7 pages a sign would keep this people happy, maybe someone could make it out of a loose A4 page!!

People here are giving out about the "service" the Gardai provide, yet they say they understand that the force is understaffed and under-resourced, yet they still criticise.

A guard going into work tomorrow and mentioning all these short-comings to their superior is not going to make one bit of a difference. Everyone knows the problem but the powers that be won't implement the solutions.

And I hate the attitude "A public servant is to serve the public." Sure never mind the fact they haven't had a break today or they have just seen a man try to hang himself in a cell.

Were the 4 people who were ignoring me too tired to come out within 15 minutes? Did 4 people just try and kill themselves?

None of us here....including you know what they were talking about. So nobody here can comment on it.

Why try hanging themselves? Judging by this thread, they could probably sucessfully starve themselves to death in a cell

    .

It wouldn't surprise me.......there was a Garda on here saying that it was fine take down the details of a crime on a loose piece of paper to later transpose on to the computer.

    I was being sarcastic

I read that post, and I have no problem with it as long as no problems arose later in regards to details being lost....
