*switches back to see possible assassination and conspiracy theory on TV3*

ah ffs.. can we use METAPHOR tags please..

I was quoting the presenter. She felt a dagger through her heart when she heard the news of increased class sizes because she's a mother.

I agree, what about kids who need SNAs but no longer have access to them.

The class teacher teaches them the same as every other child in the class of 28/30/32/34 etc which is not good for anyone really.

    Education budgets are being cut.

    They can't cut Teachers pay.

Only thing left is class numbers, less Teachers on the same conditions.

Well they did already cut them by 20% and lowered pay levels for every new teacher including their pensions rights - and Croke Park was Government driven remember.

We have a crazy situation where teachers are being paid €50 - €55 per hour to teach special needs kids at home when they can't attend their local primary school because an SNA hasn't been approved. It's a false ecomony, SNAs cost about €17 per hour.

Their place in mainstream school is guaranteed - the conditions in that school will have changed unfortunately.

Oh, they were very happy to stick the knife in for new teachers starting in the next few years.

As long as they keep their early retirement, year and a half tax free gratuity and Pensions worth over a million euro, the unions don't care what happens to anyone else.

The work of an SNA is only really seen (by some) when you take it away.
    Which is a pity.

Did i not hear of some cases where parents were being told that their kids couldnt attend a particular school because they had lost their snas?

Bullsh1t - Boards of Managements often refuse admission to special needs kids where an SNA hasn't been assigned.

    Rabbitte dismisses school criticism
    Monday, May 24, 2004

    By Michael O’Farrell, Political Reporter
LABOUR leader Pat Rabbitte yesterday dismissed criticism from Junior Justice Minister Willie O’Dea of his choice to send one of his children to a private, fee-paying school.

Minister O’Dea criticised the Labour leader because Mr Rabbitte’s daughter had completed the last year of her Leaving Certificate in the €5,000 per annum Ashfield College. Mr O’Dea said this highlighted a conflict between Labour Party policy and Mr Rabbitte’s actions.

Well, the unions were around the table and got the best for their members, that's their job afterall. They obviously did not want the entry level to be lowered but it happened. Unions don't always get what they want.

Members more important than the kids?

The entire debate is somewhat futile when you consider that the 2011 education budget is €895m and €100m of that is being used to fund private schools !! Stop funding private schools and use the €100m more productively.

I've personally never heard of that happening to be fair. I've not seen that in any Admissions Policy of a school.

The ASTI doesn't give a fiddlers dam for the kids .... all they are concerned with is the pay & conditions of their members. They should be honest enough to say that up front and stop playing this 'we're concerned for the children' card

I don't blame the Unions. they have continually got great deals for their workers.

I blame the culture which grew in Bertie Ahern's time where cash was thrown at any problem which the 'Social Partners' had. The Government needs to stand their ground and fight at times, not go through a charade of negotiations which leaves a burden of an unaffordable and unsustainable Public Sector wage and pension bill.

Well if the Unions fought for no increase in the PTR ( which they did)- it's obviously going to aid children and teachers alike.

There have been lots of reports in our newspapers about special needs kids that have been refused places because the boards of management have concerns about their safety in the absence of an SNA.

I agree. I know of students that had SNA's assigned to them - that did not need them at all, Full Time SNA's at that. Unfortunately, the complete opposite is happening now. Children who deserve and NEED an SNA might not get them.

Well, something had to give, didn't it?

And it wasnt going to be their pay/pensions/holidays etc. etc.

It was the SNAs and class sizes.
