So were all ok with the first & second letter then?

It's a bog standard character reference, totally ok to use a letterhead on.

I'm so disappointed with this, it seems like a complete abuse of his position :( There is an element of "Do you know who I am" about that particular paragraph.

Wouldn't call it abuse. Crass, up his own arse, self important dick waving and vague threats, yes. Abuse of his position, no.

General General: Legally there's no difference. Morally, one is a lot less sketchy.

It was an abuse to use Seanad note paper for a personal matter.

You may need to look over your notes on 'context'.

If a Senator was to write a "bog standard" character reference for someone like Larry Murphy there would be war about it no doubt. A convicted sex abuser is a convicted sex abuser.

Mother of God, I really can't believe this! Do you have children, nieces, nephews even cousins? This man says a 40 year old having sex with a 15 year old is acceptable, but maybe poor judgement.

There was 3 letters - One going "Here's a reference letter, hope it helps" One was a reference letter. The third was a plea for leniency.

Only the first 2 were on official paper. If I ask my boss, or one of my lecturers for a character reference, it comes with an official letterhead. Providing a chareacter reference for a friend in his official capacity is not an abuse of position. If the 3rd letter had been on official stationary, it would be a very different matter.

There was? - have you got links for all 3? Ive only seen one

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Indeed and it isn't mitigated by the fact that the politician is dating this convicted sex offender. I daresay it makes it worse.

Very unwise for Norris to have signed the letter as a member of the Irish Foreign Affairs Committee, as though he were communicating in sucha capacity.

I think that's my biggest annoyance with this whole fiasco; I can see a lot of people (myself included) simply not voting, which I think is a bad road to go down for democracy.
It's not that I was a massive Norris supporter, but I was going to vote for him. He was at least public and vocal. I honestly have no clue who else is running which is really bad publicity work on everyone elses part tbh, and I think whoever wins now only wins by default of Norris having to pull out of the race...

    +1

Ive no idea who the other people running are

having said that I think David Norris is doing himself more damage by not making an official statement, even if its just to say yes I fcuk up and I'm sorry and I'm withdrawing from the race

They're all in the one link, but there are three distinct letters.

The thing is, I don't care about any of the rest of them. I like David Norris. I thought that his election would be very progressive, and despite the mistakes here, I think he's an intelligent man. It's such a shame. I think he would have made a really good president, and it would have been an incredible step forward for Ireland in terms of gay rights and all the rest. Oh well...

It may have been official if it was on behalf of an Irish citizen or someone residence in Ireland but that was not the case.

...which was intended for the High Court at Jerusalem, to help the case of a man previously convicted of having sexually assaulted a minor.

The idea that the essay itself was a separate entity is...bizarre. Straws. Clutching.

Why? They (I'm pretty sure) weren't sent together - the first 2 were faxed to the defence lawyer, the 3rd looks like it was mailed - not the fold, as I mentioned. They may very have been admitted as 2 seperate pieces of evidence.

Agreed. "Care" is just the right word.
I was going to vote for Norris cause he was visible, charismatic, "intelligent" (academically), somewhat funny and obviously hungry for the position. In many ways, he was perfect.

None of the others are remotely visible on the same scale, and I couldn't point more than the Den guy out of a crowd. I don't care about any of the others so won't care about this election now. I always advocate voting and exercising your right to choose but the choices are just "meh" to me now. May as well have a cardboard cut out of someone doing the job...

The fact that he even thought it was a suitable thing to do illustrates his lack of judgement. No way suitable for president. Although I didn't need this incident to confirm that for me, made up my mind on him a long time ago.

Looking at the other candidates on the news today though it's a sorry sight! Was never a fan of McAlesse but none of them hold a candle to her which is saying something.

You are ethically and morally wrong, Norris knew that his bum budy had committed a serious crime, he had an affair with the dirty git, and he represented all of us here on the letterhead, he should without delay resign as a senator and a public representative, and just let us get on with paying his pension!

Is Ian Dempsey in the running?

Michael D. is the one that looks like Peig Sayers.

It's not like it was a letter of reference for a Masters in Creative Writing at Cornell.

I feel incredibly sorry for the man, I understand his motivations, and knowing little of the true situation surrounding his ex-partners conviction I do not feel it fair to jump to conclusions good or bad. However Norris used his position, and indeed this country's name secretively in order to give what should have been a mere character statement additional weight, and in a far too heavy handed manner. In effect he attempted to use his position in order to sway a judiciary, it is very unlikely there is anything he can say in order to regain my vote, such a shame because now there is no potential candidate I see fit to be our head of state.

One gets character reference when one falls out of a pub, gives bad manners to the Gardi, or maybe when lucky enough to get a job interview.

One does not give excuses, or character references to another who rapes a person one third of his age, it's also worth mentioning the victim was only 15 years old

I like Biggin's loyalty, but I think a bit of FF "mature recollection" is called for. Nice touch with the sig and all big effort I admire.

I've no doubt if the shoe was on the other foot................we'd be preached and rightly so.

You thought you'd somebody who'd break the mould, turns out you've a total sleazebag.

Lived near a 45 year old going out with a 16 year old. Sleazebag.

I'm sure if it was Biggin's daughter he'd be onto Joe.

Rape? Hold on, I thought it was just a conviction of having sex with an underager? That is slightly different to full-on raping them. The sex may have been consensual (I thought it was, and the kid's parents just found out and took it to court?).

It's still a pretty serious conviction no matter how you view it.

    Statutory rape.
